Project Title: Material Assistance & Education for Low-Income and Rural Communities
Project Description:

As we address the challenges faced by low-income families in Northeast Georgia, our education program seeks to provide critical support for children and their parents. With a funding request of $10,000 for the year, we aim to enhance educational opportunities and access to essential material resources, such as formula, diapers, wipes, and other necessities.

The statistics regarding educational outcomes in our region are concerning. According to the Georgia Department of Education, over 50% of students in some rural areas are classified as economically disadvantaged. These children often lack access to vital educational tools and resources that can drastically improve their learning experience. Furthermore, a recent survey indicated that more than 30% of families in these communities struggle to afford basic baby supplies, which directly impacts the health and well-being of both infants and parents. With this funding request we would like to allocate $5,000 to resources and $5,000 to evidence-based education curriculum.

Our program will establish resource distribution points within local schools and community centers, providing families with the tools they need for both education and caregiving. We also plan to offer workshops for parents, providing guidance on nutrition, early childhood education, and resource access, thereby empowering them to assist in their children’s learning journey.

With your support, we can create a sustainable program that not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term educational success for these families. Together, we can build a brighter future for our children in Northeast Georgia, ensuring they have the foundation to achieve their full potential. Your investment will make a significant impact in breaking the cycle of poverty and opening doors to a better life. Thank you for considering our request.

Project Title: Technology Upgrades for Lucy Daniels Center (LDC)
Project Description:

LDC has three main prongs to our work: Lucy Daniles Therapy; Lucy Daniels School; and Lucy Daniels Outreach. The therapy clinic accepts all major forms of insurance and currently over 50% of our caseload is Medicaid; the school typically has 20-30 students each year and provides small class sizes, appropriate instruction, and daily therapy for pre-K-Grade 5 students who struggle to thrive in a typical classroom setting; and outreach programs include professional development for early childhood educators, parenting programs, student assessments, and social skills programs for young children.
LDC needs to replace aging SmartBoards, tablets, and other technology that our students and patients use as part of their education and therapeutic treatments. All of our children are struggling with social, emotional, or behavioral challenges and receive appropriate intervention therapy at LDC as full-time students, therapy patients, or program participants and functioning technology is an important part of helping to deliver programs and services.
Every year we see more than 500 children through our programs and all of them will benefit from providing functioning, updated technology. The classroom Smartboards are used to deliver regular curriculum, summer programming, and special programs for children throughout the year, while tablets are essential for helping students with communication delays and language barriers fully participate in classes and treatment.
Our current equipment is on its last legs, with almost everything ageing out of software updates and our older tablets unable to run newer programs and apps. As a therapeutic day program and therapy clinic LDC receives no government support for our students and patients, so we rely 100% on a combination of fundraising and revenue from the clinic to fund our programs and initiatives. Your support will help to set us up for the next several years with the tools and resources our children need to continue to work through their challenges and find a more hopeful path for the future.

Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Truckload of Trikes
Project Description:

The McLindon Family Foundation is committed to enhancing the lives of children with special needs by providing adaptive bikes year-round. Since our inception in 2008, we have successfully delivered 665 adaptive bikes to children facing various disabilities, including spina bifida, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, Down syndrome, autism, traumatic brain injury, and genetic disorders. These specially designed bikes offer a safe and enjoyable riding experience for children who are unable to ride traditional two-wheel bicycles.

The process of selecting the right bike begins with collaboration between our team and each child’s physical therapist. This partnership ensures that we order a bike tailored to the child’s specific needs and abilities, enabling them to experience the joy of cycling. Riding an adaptive bike not only provides a recreational outlet for these children but also promotes physical activity, which is essential for their overall health and development.

To enhance our impact while effectively managing our budget, we have negotiated a significant discount with our adaptive bike manufacturer. By ordering 40 bikes at a time, we are able to slash waitlists dramatically and expedite the delivery of bikes to children’s homes. This timely access is particularly crucial for children with regressive disorders, as they require consistent, low-impact physical activity to maintain or improve their strength and mobility.

We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and experience the freedom that comes with riding a bike. Our mission at the McLindon Family Foundation is to ensure that as many children as possible can participate in this enriching activity. By advocating for children with special needs and providing them with adaptive bikes, we take significant strides toward creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all. Your support can help us continue this vital work and make a lasting difference in the lives of these children and their families.

Project Title: Caregiving Youth Project
Project Description:

Now in its 18th year, the AACY’s Caregiving Youth Project has been serving an otherwise hidden and vulnerable population of middle and high school caregivers. These unrecognized youth often sacrifice their education, health, well-being, and childhood to perform adult-sized responsibilities of
providing care for a family member who is chronically ill, injured, elderly or disabled.

Research shows that 3.4 million youth in the U.S. (Caregiving in the U.S., 2020) and 290,000+ public middle and high school students in Florida alone (FLDOH/CDC, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2019) have caregiving responsibilities. This number dwarfs the number of children of all ages who are homeless (95,000) or in foster care (15,000) during this same period.

Fulfilling their dual role as students and caregivers is compromised by missing school or after school activities, an inability to complete homework, and an increased risk of dropping out of school to care for their care recipient. The Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) was established to identify and support Caregiving Youth by utilizing a three-pronged integrated approach within the systems of healthcare, education, and the community.

Currently, the CYP works with 614 Caregiving Youth within 44 middle and high schools (through a direct partnership) as well as students who receive support in 22 other schools which lack the in-school component.

In addition to in-school Skills Building groups, Lunch and Learn sessions, and individual supportive counseling, the AACY Family Specialists conduct home assessments to determine other needs in the home that can strengthen the family and reduce stress on the child. These services include but are not limited to respite, tutoring, mentorship, and special projects. Sponsored activities allow Caregiving Youth to meet peers from other schools and have time to have fun.

A major outcome of the CYP services over time includes an ten year high school graduation rate of 98.3%, with most going on to post-secondary education or the military.

Project Title: JC Nalle Community School Sports and Leadership Camp
Project Description:

NCCF is the non-profit provider of the community school program at JC Nalle Elementary School serving predominantly at-risk elementary school students and their families in DC’s Marshall Heights neighborhood of Ward 7. 87% of students are Black/African American and 12% are Hispanic/Latino. 73% of students are at-risk, meaning they are homeless, in foster care, and/or eligible for food stamps or welfare. We provide out-of-school-time programming throughout the year that focuses on early intervention, academic support, after school/weekend/summer enrichment, leadership training, donations of free needed items, and parental engagement. As part of this program, we host a Summer Sports and Leadership Camp for up to 100 JC Nalle Elementary School students for six weeks. The camp offers students with academic enrichment, sports, and team-building activities designed to increase their confidence, promote belonging, foster leadership skills, and benefit their physical and mental health. By the end of camp, our objective is for students to feel emotionally and physically empowered to achieve their academic and personal goals for the coming school year. The camp also provides the valuable resources of childcare and food during the summer for parents who are struggling financially. We would like to utilize funding to support bus transportation costs ($750/bus x 2 buses) to take students on weekly field trips to enrich their hands-on learning experiences this summer. We have a partnership with Tickets for Kids that supports us with free tickets to events and experiences for our students but lack the funding to support the bus travel to utilize the tickets we receive. These field trips provide crucial real-world learning experiences for our students that strengthen their community and family bonds, create unforgettable memories, support social and emotional growth, provide exposure to role models, and boost self-esteem and confidence.

Project Title: Kindergarten Readiness
Project Description:

Opportunity requests support for its Kindergarten Readiness program to maintain the current level of educational programming by providing one year of tuition-gap scholarship funding to support 2-year-old children and to support 55% of costs per child that are not covered through tuition. 95% of our children are minorities and 8% have limited English language skills. Most live in single-parent households and crime-riddled neighborhoods with 92% living below or within 150% of the federal poverty level. Parents struggle to meet their children’s basic needs for food, safe housing, healthcare, and quality childcare. You can help Opportunity achieve its mission: Empowering the children of working families to achieve academic and life success through educational programs that embrace the whole child and through family programming.

Opportunity provides year-round, five days per week preschool education. We deliver comprehensive early childhood education preparing at-risk children to enter kindergarten meeting or exceeding standards for school readiness. Accredited by the National Accreditation Commission and recognized as a Gold Seal School of Excellence by the Florida Department of Children and Families, Opportunity provides critical services and experiences focusing on the whole child ensuring equitable access to enriching programs.

Opportunity’s curriculum is individually tailored to engage each child, emphasizes creativity, spontaneous play and exploration and is combined with formal instruction based on Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards. The Literacy for Life curriculum provides the core from which a child will learn throughout his or her lifetime. Opportunity implements STEAM practices, which incorporate enriched science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics throughout the curriculum. Our art, music, movement, field trips, early childhood wellness and social and physical fitness programs enhance our students’ social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. The combination of our literacy curriculum enhanced with STEAM practices and focused social/emotional development encourages curiosity, investigation, and discovery in young learners.

Project Title: Early Literacy for Lifelong Success
Project Description:

Fun Time Early Childhood Academy is seeking funding to support our Early Literacy Initiative, designed to enhance early reading and language skills for underserved children ages birth to 5 years. Serving up to 350 children across four locations, our goal is to ensure every child in our care has the tools to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

This initiative focuses on providing classroom libraries, equipping each of our classrooms with a wide range of age-appropriate books to foster a love for reading. In addition to physical resources, we will host parent workshops that empower caregivers with the knowledge and strategies to support their child’s early literacy development at home. Teacher training will be a key component, ensuring that our educators are equipped with the latest research-based strategies to promote literacy in young learners.

To complement these efforts, we will also host literacy events that engage children and families in interactive, fun, and educational activities centered around reading. These events will create a community of support around literacy, inspiring both children and parents to view reading as an essential skill.

With your support, we aim to ensure that every child at Fun Time Early Childhood Academy enters kindergarten with the foundational reading and language skills necessary for academic success. This initiative will make a lasting impact on the lives of children, families, and educators in our community.

Project Title: Moments of Joy
Project Description:

I am excited to introduce LivFree Inc., a Connecticut-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and seek support for our Moments of Joy program. Founded in 2016 after our daughter Lauren’s leukemia diagnosis, LivFree delivers uplifting experiences—sporting events, theme park outings, Broadway shows—to kids with cancer and their families, offering a break from treatment’s challenges. Since starting, we’ve helped over 700 families nationwide.

Our Moments of Joy program tackles the emotional and social toll cancer takes on entire families—parents, siblings, and the child in treatment. Each experience, averaging $1,500, includes tickets, transportation, and meals, ensuring accessibility for all. In 2025, we aim to reach 150 families, strengthening partnerships with Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. We complement Make-A-Wish by supporting kids ineligible for their wishes—those who’ve relapsed or are over 18—while prioritizing whole-family relief.

We request $7,500 to fund five family’s’ moment of joy, aligning with the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s commitment to improve and transform the lives of children and young adults. This grant will deliver immediate respite, fostering hope and connection. Success will be measured by family participation, satisfaction surveys (aiming for 90% positive feedback), and completed outings. We sustain this work through fundraising events, grants, and local sponsorships, ensuring long-term impact.

I’d love to discuss how LivFree can partner with the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to bring joy to families facing pediatric cancer. Thank you for considering us for a grant, and a chance to make a difference.
