Project Title: Pick ‘Along Summer Camp
Project Description:
Pick Along Summer Camp is one of BCM’s most immersive and engaging educational programs. Children aged 8-16 are connected with activities and mentors that nurture and explore their musical interests. Throughout the week, campers receive expert instruction in various music styles on a stringed instrument of their choice. Each session is limited to 12-15 participants to ensure extensive individual attention and guidance. Students also have the chance to explore the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, partake in STEM learning with The Science of Sound, experience radio technology at a working station, and collaborate and perform in front of a live audience. Special guest instructors provide further enrichment opportunities like songwriter workshops, clogging and square dance lessons, and theater arts. This type of hands-on learning ignites creativity and encourages students to continue their musical education.
The impact and value of programs like Pick Along Summer Camp extend beyond just exposure to the arts. Numerous studies have demonstrated a strong link between participation in music education and academic success. Musical learning can positively affect overall cognitive development and executive functions (Janurik & Jozsa, 2022). These skills are essential in all areas of life. Therefore, providing access to engaging musical education programs helps children and youth reach their full potential and prepares them for a brighter future.
One of BCM’s primary goals is to provide access to quality music education programs to all, regardless of economic background. Pick Along Summer Camp exemplifies this commitment, as it is offered at a low cost and provides scholarship opportunities to any student who needs them. Additionally, BCM lends instruments from the education collection to participants upon request, enabling every child to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Grant funding is crucial to fulfilling this mission, ensuring Pick Along Summer Camp remains accessible to all interested youth.
