Project Title: JC Nalle Community School Sports and Leadership Camp
Project Description:

NCCF is the non-profit provider of the community school program at JC Nalle Elementary School serving predominantly at-risk elementary school students and their families in DC’s Marshall Heights neighborhood of Ward 7. 87% of students are Black/African American and 12% are Hispanic/Latino. 73% of students are at-risk, meaning they are homeless, in foster care, and/or eligible for food stamps or welfare. We provide out-of-school-time programming throughout the year that focuses on early intervention, academic support, after school/weekend/summer enrichment, leadership training, donations of free needed items, and parental engagement. As part of this program, we host a Summer Sports and Leadership Camp for up to 100 JC Nalle Elementary School students for six weeks. The camp offers students with academic enrichment, sports, and team-building activities designed to increase their confidence, promote belonging, foster leadership skills, and benefit their physical and mental health. By the end of camp, our objective is for students to feel emotionally and physically empowered to achieve their academic and personal goals for the coming school year. The camp also provides the valuable resources of childcare and food during the summer for parents who are struggling financially. We would like to utilize funding to support bus transportation costs ($750/bus x 2 buses) to take students on weekly field trips to enrich their hands-on learning experiences this summer. We have a partnership with Tickets for Kids that supports us with free tickets to events and experiences for our students but lack the funding to support the bus travel to utilize the tickets we receive. These field trips provide crucial real-world learning experiences for our students that strengthen their community and family bonds, create unforgettable memories, support social and emotional growth, provide exposure to role models, and boost self-esteem and confidence.
