Project Title: Empowering Youth Through Mobile Community Impact
Project Description:

Faith Christian Academy (FCA) seeks a $9,000 grant to purchase and equip a food trailer that will serve as a mobile hub for student-led business initiatives and community outreach. This innovative project will provide hands-on learning opportunities in entrepreneurship, culinary arts, and service leadership to students in grades 6–12. Operated as part of our science and technology programming, students will plan, staff, and manage mobile events, developing real-world skills in STEM, marketing, budgeting, and community service.
In addition to enhancing educational outcomes, the trailer will support under-resourced communities in the Bucks and Montgomery County region by distributing food, supplies, and educational materials during outreach events and emergencies. As a designated emergency shelter site, FCA is strategically positioned to serve its surrounding population. The trailer will be utilized throughout the year, especially in summer and fall, maximizing its impact in both school and community settings.
This project aligns with FCA’s mission of providing education from a biblical worldview while preparing students to serve God and others. Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will empower the next generation of servant leaders—children and young adults equipped to make a tangible difference.

Project Title: Needs-Drive, Family-Focused Care for Underserved Communities
Project Description:

IWS has a distinguished history of promoting child and family health and addressing Chicago’s most pressing public health challenges: in 1911, first opening a series of “milk stations” that saved infants’ lives by preventing deaths caused by unpasteurized milk. The “milk stations” evolved into well-child clinics, and IWS continued to innovate, for example, being among the first community clinics to incorporate child development and behavioral health counseling in 1924 and establishing pediatric dentistry in 1970. In just the last decade, IWS launched developmental delay therapies, and a Centering Pregnancy™ program and nutrition and exercise program in 2018 and began serving all ages to “nest” the whole family, creating a healthcare home where accessible, integrated, and coordinated healthcare services are available to all.

IWS’s child- and family-centered care model ensures that care teams work together to nurture the whole health of patients, their families, and their ecosystems—where they live, work, learn, and play—serving over 12,000 underserved and under-resourced Chicagoans annually. Our continuum of integrated and coordinated health services includes Pediatric Primary Care; Adult Health; Reproductive Health; Prenatal Care; Pediatric and Family Dentistry; Child and Adult Counseling Services; Behavioral Health Integrated Care; Psychiatric Medication Management; Speech Therapy; Care Coordination; Food Pantry; and health education programming. Every patient is met with trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and linguistically competent care.

Of current patients, 93% live at or below the Federal Poverty Level; 79% are Medicaid enrolled; 13% are uninsured; 60% are pediatric patients; 60% are female; 95% identify as Latino; and 57% have limited English proficiency.

In 2024, IWS was designated as a Patent-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and recognized with distinction in behavioral health integration. A two-time recipient of the Gold Badge HRSA Award for community health quality care, IWS upholds a legacy of excellence in providing comprehensive and high-quality services.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/31/2025
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Expanding Education Advocacy for Underserved Children in New Jersey
Project Description:

Every year, hundreds of low-income families in New Jersey turn to ACNJ’s KidLaw Resource Center for urgent, free legal support when their children are denied critical education services. Whether a child with disabilities is placed in an inappropriate setting or a student is suspended without due process, our legal advocacy often makes the difference between crisis and stability, exclusion and opportunity.

KidLaw’s direct representation and educational outreach are led entirely by one attorney, Nina Peckman, whose caseload has surged from 250 students in 2021 to over 350 in 2024. Nina provides expert legal counsel in IEP meetings, disciplinary hearings, and negotiations; trains attorneys; educates parents statewide through workshops and online videos on topics such as student rights and parent advocacy; and develops culturally accessible resources. Demand far outpaces our capacity, and the gap is growing—especially among families with limited English proficiency.

The pandemic’s lasting effects on school staffing, funding, and student mental health have intensified these challenges, leaving students with unmet needs and parents desperate for guidance. Cases that once required brief support now demand sustained legal intervention and advocacy. Many families we assist would otherwise go unrepresented, leading to avoidable academic failure, truancy, or prolonged school exclusion.

This proposal seeks funding to hire a part-time bilingual attorney ($50k salary) who will expand KidLaw’s reach and help serve an additional 75–100 families annually. The new attorney will take on direct cases, support Spanish-speaking families, and extend outreach in underserved areas. They will also contribute to training and resource development, helping scale our impact and build long-term organizational capacity.

With this investment, ACNJ will reduce its backlog, improve equity, and ensure that more children—regardless of language or zip code—receive the education they deserve. At a time when many families cannot afford legal representation, KidLaw remains one of the only lifelines available.

Total Project Budget: $199,258

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey (committed) Merancas Foundation (committed) We received a $50,000 grant from The IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey and a $100,000 grant from the Merancas Foundation that primarily covers the cost and benefits of our existing attorney, Nina Peckman, and the law student interns. We anticipate these grants to be renewed as they have been in prior years. This ongoing foundational support underscores the credibility and urgency of our work but also highlights the need for additional resources to meet the growing demand for our services. With additional funding, we will grow our legal team, improve operational efficiency, and expand our outreach and training efforts to better serve our community.

Project Title: Young Explorers Program
Project Description:

The Young Explorers Program extends traditional Boys & Girls Club services to youth experiencing homelessness, an underserved and disadvantaged group of children in our community, getting to the heart of our mission to serve “those who need us most.” This includes a full, healthy meal and a safe place to learn and grow on school days from 2 to 6 p.m., on teacher planning days and intersessions periods, and during the summer. Most importantly, they have a safe and nurturing environment, with caring adults, and a chance to just be a “kid.”
With regular attendance, we expect to see similar outcomes as we have seen from our other Club members: 86% improving academic performance, 80% improving their behavior, and 94% enjoying learning new things. A reduced rate of smoking or drug and alcohol use (87% of our teens vs. 65% nationally), and an increase in community involvement and volunteering (65% of teen members vs. 25% U.S. adults). The program will target 50 youth.
Stability is important to proper childhood development, and the Boys & Girls Club offers another avenue for stability in their nomadic lives. It creates a place where each child can feel safe and accepted and where people listen to the child.
Our proven process indicates 72% of Club members develop a sense of belonging and say people at the Club “accept me for who I am.” Like all our members, the youth will receive academic assistance, which can’t be successful without the physical and mental safe space we offer.

The Gentry Foundation for Autism is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing access to crucial evaluations and ongoing resources for children age 5 and under who may be affected by autism spectrum disorder. The foundation provides no-cost evaluations to Arizona families who meet low-income criteria. If a child receives an autism diagnosis, families have the option to work with a 1:1 Family Liaison, who assists in navigating ongoing resources and support systems. A timely diagnosis is essential for gaining access to critical early intervention services, which are proven to significantly improve short-term developmental progress and long-term quality of life outcomes for individuals on the autism spectrum. Children diagnosed at age 3, for instance, can receive up to 1,500 additional hours of therapy and services by the time they reach kindergarten, compared to children who are not diagnosed until kindergarten. This early intervention is critical in maximizing developmental potential and fostering lifelong success.

Project Title: Kids Club Play Awning
Project Description:

Adding an awning over a playspace is a practical solution that enhances the area’s safety and longevity. An awning protects children from excessive sun exposure by providing shade, reducing the risk of sunburns and overheating. With rising concerns about UV radiation, an adequately installed awning blocks harmful rays, allowing kids to play comfortably and safely, even during peak daylight hours.

An awning also offers year-round benefits. In colder months (e.g., October through April), it helps prevent ice buildup, making the ground safer for play by reducing slips and falls. This consistent accessibility encourages physical activity and social engagement, ensuring that the playground remains a vibrant hub for the community.
