Project Title: Needs-Drive, Family-Focused Care for Underserved Communities
Project Description:
IWS has a distinguished history of promoting child and family health and addressing Chicago’s most pressing public health challenges: in 1911, first opening a series of “milk stations” that saved infants’ lives by preventing deaths caused by unpasteurized milk. The “milk stations” evolved into well-child clinics, and IWS continued to innovate, for example, being among the first community clinics to incorporate child development and behavioral health counseling in 1924 and establishing pediatric dentistry in 1970. In just the last decade, IWS launched developmental delay therapies, and a Centering Pregnancy™ program and nutrition and exercise program in 2018 and began serving all ages to “nest” the whole family, creating a healthcare home where accessible, integrated, and coordinated healthcare services are available to all.
IWS’s child- and family-centered care model ensures that care teams work together to nurture the whole health of patients, their families, and their ecosystems—where they live, work, learn, and play—serving over 12,000 underserved and under-resourced Chicagoans annually. Our continuum of integrated and coordinated health services includes Pediatric Primary Care; Adult Health; Reproductive Health; Prenatal Care; Pediatric and Family Dentistry; Child and Adult Counseling Services; Behavioral Health Integrated Care; Psychiatric Medication Management; Speech Therapy; Care Coordination; Food Pantry; and health education programming. Every patient is met with trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and linguistically competent care.
Of current patients, 93% live at or below the Federal Poverty Level; 79% are Medicaid enrolled; 13% are uninsured; 60% are pediatric patients; 60% are female; 95% identify as Latino; and 57% have limited English proficiency.
In 2024, IWS was designated as a Patent-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and recognized with distinction in behavioral health integration. A two-time recipient of the Gold Badge HRSA Award for community health quality care, IWS upholds a legacy of excellence in providing comprehensive and high-quality services.
