Project Title: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of the Virginia Peninsulas
Project Description:

The DeGood Foundation’s mission is to ensure that all children of the Virginia Peninsulas will have equitable access to early literacy resources. We serve as the local program partner of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for the Virginia Peninsulas, a book-gifting program that mails free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to children each month from birth until their fifth birthday, regardless of income or background. Through the Imagination Library, we inspire a love of books, reading, and learning that will lay the foundation for success in K-12, higher education, and the workforce.

The Imagination Library is more than just a feel-good program: the body of evidence on early brain development shows the importance of reading to young children. Reading is the key for lifelong learning and the single most important activity for building knowledge required for eventual success in school, work, and life in general. Brain science provides evidence that reading to children before Kindergarten influences the developing brain when it is most sensitive to nurturing experience.

A common misconception is that Dolly Parton covers the cost of books for the Imagination Library. While The Dollywood Foundation provides the infrastructure, at the heart of the program are local program partners, like The DeGood Foundation, who enroll children and raise critical funds to cover the cost of books and postage within their service areas.

Project Title: Ballet Bound
Project Description:

Louisville Ballet believes that all children should have access to high-quality dance education regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, or socio-economic status. Ballet Bound was established in 2020 and is designed to provide access to underserved children into the world of ballet while serving as a pathway to The Louisville Ballet School, Louisville Ballet Studio Company, and eventually the possibility of a career with Louisville Ballet. Ballet Bound aims to address underrepresentation and barriers to access for underserved families who would like to receive dance instruction and enjoy professional ballet performances in our community.

Each year, 20 students ages 7-9 are awarded one year of free tuition and uniforms to take classes at Louisville Ballet. Ballet Bound students have three performance opportunities throughout the year, and their families receive free tickets to attend all Louisville Ballet performances. At the conclusion of this free year of study, up to five students from this group are selected to receive a Ballet Bound Continuing Scholarship to the Louisville Ballet School. These students are eligible for free training until high school graduation. These scholarships cover the costs of tuition, uniforms, dance shoes, and all other administrative fees associated with the study of ballet. Coverage of fees to participate in annual performance opportunities, special workshops with guest teachers at the school, and the Louisville Ballet Summer Intensive are also included in the scholarship. The rest of the students are eligible for partial financial aid.

Our Ballet Bound Program aims to increase dance and arts engagement in our community and challenge stereotypes that have long been prevalent in ballet. By creating access to the arts at a young age, we hope to impact these children for a lifetime. Your support will help us to sustain this vital program, which is a cornerstone of our Community Engagement mission.

Project Title: AAPI After-School Youth Programming and Mentoring
Project Description:

Asian American LEAD (AALEAD) is dedicated to empowering low-income and underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) youth through culturally responsive programming and advocacy. By offering free after-school, summer, and mentoring activities, AALEAD creates safe spaces for youth to build the skills necessary for success in education and careers, understand their identities, and develop leadership abilities.

Despite AAPI communities being the fastest-growing population in the U.S., systemic racial inequities and socioeconomic challenges still prevent many AAPI youth from accessing critical support. The 2020 Census data for Washington, D.C. revealed a 69% increase in residents identifying as Asian Alone or in Combination, highlighting the need for targeted resources. Unfortunately, these communities often face the implications of the "Model Minority" myth, which falsely suggests all AAPI individuals are successful and overlooks the diverse needs of low-income and blue-collar workers within this group.

AALEAD’s evidence-based programs address these challenges by helping youth express their cultural identities, develop self-advocacy skills, and actively engage in leadership and public speaking. By exposing youth to various career pathways and fostering mentorship opportunities, AALEAD empowers participants to make informed decisions and see the direct impact of their actions. This holistic approach helps AAPI youth become confident, caring, and responsible leaders within their communities.

AALEAD’s mentoring program pairs youth with dedicated adults who offer emotional support and guidance. These mentors encourage personal growth, self-expression, and exploration of new interests, with relationships that often extend beyond graduation. Many former mentees return to the program as mentors, contributing to a cycle of support and leadership within the AAPI community. AALEAD continues to be a vital resource in addressing the needs of low-income and underserved AAPI youth in a rapidly changing world.

Project Title: Our Girls Rock Too! Annual Programs Empowerment Initiative
Project Description:

Our Girls Rock Too! (OGR2) is a nonprofit organization based in Bulloch County, Georgia, dedicated to empowering girls and young women through mentorship, creative arts, and personal development programs. Founded in 2017, OGR2 provides a safe, inclusive space where girls can build confidence, cultivate self-esteem, and develop leadership skills that prepare them for success in life.
We are requesting $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to support OGR2’s annual programs in 2025. Funding will help us continue providing dynamic workshops, enrichment activities, and community events that inspire and empower girls ages 10 to 17. Our programs focus on personal growth, creative expression, and positive self-image. Participants engage in activities such as vision board creation, journaling, team-building exercises, and empowerment discussions led by dedicated mentors.
OGR2 serves girls primarily from Bulloch County and surrounding rural communities in Southeast Georgia. Many of our participants face social and economic barriers that limit access to quality enrichment opportunities. By offering our programs at no cost to families, we help bridge this gap and ensure that all girls have a chance to thrive.
Grant funds from the Hermanowski Foundation will directly support program materials, supplies for workshops, transportation assistance, and stipends for facilitators and mentors.
