Project Title: Safe Harbor Shelter and Transitional Living Program
Project Description:

The Northern Lighthouse, Inc. (TNLH) is a nonprofit organization that provides support to individuals facing poverty, mental health challenges, and youth experiencing homelessness. The mission of TNLH is to join people on their path to a healthy mind, healthy body, and healthy life. TNLH connects people in Maine experiencing poverty to basic needs supports, such as case management and counseling through its mental health programs. These services focus on improving the well-being of children and families and providing assistance to meet their individual needs. TNLH also offers services to meet the needs of youth experiencing homelessness, including Aroostook County’s first emergency shelter for homeless youth ages 10-17 and a Transitional Living Program For homeless youth ages 16-21. Through these services, TNLH provides homeless youth in Aroostook County with access to food, shelter, clothing, case management, counseling, basic access to transportation, and referrals to service providers in the community. These are crucial services that fill a gap for youth in our communities experiencing homelessness and housing instability. TNLH also provides educational and employment support, as well as skills training to help youth build independence. These services focus on improving the well-being of homeless youth, helping them build independence, and providing direct support for at least three months following their time in the program(s) to ensure continued success in the community. TNLH homeless youth services provide a safe and nurturing environment for youth, offering them stability, guidance, and opportunities to break the cycle of homelessness and build a better future for themselves. Through all of its services, TNLH responds to the needs of Maine communities and works to make a difference in the lives of the individuals whom it serves. The programs and services TNLH offers work to combat poverty and the cycle of homelessness that affect youth in our communities.
