Project Title: Civic Innovators Fellowship / Civic Innovation Academy
Project Description:

Civics Unplugged, a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to empower future leaders with the training, funding, and community they need to become civic innovators. We do this through running free, in-person (Civic Innovation Academy) and virtual (Civic Innovators Fellowship) programs for high school students across the country and providing graduates with funding and support to launch their own civic innovation initiatives. Our programs and the opportunities we provide help young leaders feel belonging, find their purpose, and pursue impactful and financially sustaining career pathways. Over the past five years, we’ve worked with over 5,000 fellows through the Civics Unplugged Fellowship program. The curriculum of our in-person and virtual fellowships is designed to challenge Fellows to think more critically and cultivate an environment conducive to challenging norms – fostering a culture where new ideas are not shut down, but elevated. Fellows participate in group projects where they build friendships with other young innovators who are interested in civics, sparking a strong community of our nation’s brightest thinkers.
One of our program’s missions is to specifically empower young women and minority students, who have been most marginalized by systematic inequalities in the education system, to achieve their goals as civic leaders. Of our graduates, 74% identify as young women, 70% identify as POC, and 40% will be first generation college students. We provide our Fellows with a safe and inviting space where they can be intellectually curious and make powerful statements. Graduates of our programs have used funding to create the largest voting movement in Texas, become the youngest elected official in Arizona, add youth-seats to five State Boards of Education, launch apps recognized by Congress, and so much more. By empowering our Fellows to be agents of change in their communities, we move past just impacting individuals – instead inviting thousands more youth into our community, connecting them with purpose through civic work, and improving the civic health of our nation.

Project Title: School on Water
Project Description:

Mosdos Sanz is a private school in the Monsey area that is well known for its high educational standards for religious Jewish girls. The school’s staff doesn’t take its responsibility of building the next generation lightly and sees quality education as a mission rather than an occupation.

The school has garnered an incredible reputation in the area due to its holistic approach to bringing out the best in every student. Not all students shine the same way. and the staff at Mosdos Sanz know that well. Teachers are trained to appeal not only to the mind of each student but also to their emotional and social health, bringing out the best of every girl. The staff also provides emotional support, remedial support, or anything else students may need so they grow into healthy, confident individuals who can meaningfully contribute to society.

Project ‘School on Water’ is Mosdos Sanz’s latest endeavor of building a pool on its grounds, opening a new world of health education, team building, and water sports to its students. Whether due to money constraints at home or simply a lack of opportunity in the local area, the staff at Mosdos Sanz have noted a lack of fitness and exercise opportunities for its students. Obesity is on the rise, and many students are living inactive and unhealthy lifestyles.
More than anything taught at school, the school board knows that the health and well-being of its students come first. It also acknowledges that there is a giant wealth of opportunity in a pool setting for social education, water safety, physical education, and healthy sports. With Project ‘School on Water’ the school hopes to partner with the Hermanowski Fund to bring these pool benefits into the school and the local area.

Project Title: Youth Out Loud
Project Description:

Youth Out Loud is a youth empowerment project, designed to invest in and equip local youth to find creative solutions for the challenges they face in our community. Exploring the human experience is integral to the fundamental question these young people are grappling with, which includes issues of identity and sense of place.

All activities will take place in Globe-Miami-San Carlos, which is rich in diversity. One local school superintendent noted that his student population is a third White, a third Latinx, and a third Native American. The diversity and the proximity of these various people groups offer many opportunities for conversations and connections, especially among youth, who comprise over twenty-five percent of our population.

A cohort of local youth will be selected from an application process in the fall of 2024 and will meet weekly with our leadership coaches. They will be equipped with new vocabulary, communication skills and a capacity for critical analysis. From this space, from January to June 2025, they will organize and facilitate monthly interactive roundtable discussions on topics relevant to them for other youth in partnership with their schools and/or in their community, e.g., the local cafe. They will also pilot monthly community outreach events that are creative solutions to some of the challenges they perceive.

At the end of the project in June, the youth cohort will capture their process and learning in a culminating piece, e.g., short docufilm, photo collage, multimedia journal, etc. The youth themselves will choose how they would like to express their voice in this piece as well as how they will showcase it to the larger community.

Project Title: Equity in Steam Coalition
Project Description:

The Equity in STEAM Initiative, now in its fourth year, has established crucial connections and a dedicated community focused on addressing STEAM inequities. Corporate recognition of the value in diversity and partnerships with nonprofit allies have bolstered this movement. YWCA, in response to stakeholder feedback, has formed the Equity in STEAM Coalition, led by YWCA and Intel Arizona. This coalition aims to cultivate diversity and inclusivity in STEAM, fostering collaboration and collective action for meaningful change.
Importance:
The YWCA Equity in STEAM coalition addresses systemic barriers hindering women and people of color in STEAM careers, which is crucial as Arizona positions itself as a tech hub. The coalition cultivates diverse STEAM talent by supporting nonprofits and schools statewide, enhancing economic prosperity and competitiveness.
Grant Utilization:
Funding will support Year 1 activities, including workshops, resources, and events to engage stakeholders and advance equity in STEAM. It will directly contribute to coalition sustainability and impact, not for re-granting purposes.
Impact of Coalition’s Unavailability:
Without the coalition, gender and racial gaps in STEAM would persist, impede Arizona’s ability to innovate and leverage its diverse talent pool, and stunt growth and advancement.
Sustainability Beyond Funder Investment:
The coalition fosters long-term impact through ongoing collaboration, education, and advocacy, embedding social equity into the STEAM ecosystem for systemic change.

Project Title: Empowering Marginalized Students with Exceptional Educators in Early Learning Environments
Project Description:

Clover’s Early Head Start program provides year-round quality child care and educational and recreational activities to infants and toddlers between six weeks to two years old. Early Head Start focuses on developing solid learning skills at a young age. These cognitive and behavioral skills play a vital role as young children grow. Our continuity of care strategy allows children to remain with the same teaching team from entry until transition to preschool, which enables solid and positive relationships. With a teacher-to-student ratio of one to four, children can work in small groups with a primary caregiver teacher. This strategy supports individualized instruction in which students work and play with other children to develop positive peer relationships and friendships. We also actively engage parents to participate in their child’s education and create a recognition of the importance of regular attendance to the foundation of their child’s educational career—many children who complete the Early Head Start program transition to our Head Start preschool. The Head Start program prepares preschool children, ages three to five, for successful academic careers by using innovative methods to make learning fun. In addition to foundational preparation for kindergarten, children are instructed in music and movement, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), physical education and health, computer literacy, and the arts.
