Project Title: Civic Innovators Fellowship / Civic Innovation Academy
Project Description:

Civics Unplugged, a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to empower future leaders with the training, funding, and community they need to become civic innovators. We do this through running free, in-person (Civic Innovation Academy) and virtual (Civic Innovators Fellowship) programs for high school students across the country and providing graduates with funding and support to launch their own civic innovation initiatives. Our programs and the opportunities we provide help young leaders feel belonging, find their purpose, and pursue impactful and financially sustaining career pathways. Over the past five years, we’ve worked with over 5,000 fellows through the Civics Unplugged Fellowship program. The curriculum of our in-person and virtual fellowships is designed to challenge Fellows to think more critically and cultivate an environment conducive to challenging norms – fostering a culture where new ideas are not shut down, but elevated. Fellows participate in group projects where they build friendships with other young innovators who are interested in civics, sparking a strong community of our nation’s brightest thinkers.
One of our program’s missions is to specifically empower young women and minority students, who have been most marginalized by systematic inequalities in the education system, to achieve their goals as civic leaders. Of our graduates, 74% identify as young women, 70% identify as POC, and 40% will be first generation college students. We provide our Fellows with a safe and inviting space where they can be intellectually curious and make powerful statements. Graduates of our programs have used funding to create the largest voting movement in Texas, become the youngest elected official in Arizona, add youth-seats to five State Boards of Education, launch apps recognized by Congress, and so much more. By empowering our Fellows to be agents of change in their communities, we move past just impacting individuals – instead inviting thousands more youth into our community, connecting them with purpose through civic work, and improving the civic health of our nation.
