Project Title: Ending the Silence
Project Description:

According to a study by the California Endowment: ““Young adults in California experience mental health challenges at alarming rates, with more than three-quarters reporting anxiety in the last year, more than half reporting depression, 31% experiencing suicidal thinking and 16% self-harm.:
NAMI-SCC brings Ending the Silence (ETS) into high schools and middle schools in Santa Clara County. ETS is a 50-minute interactive and transformational presentation devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative presentation, short videos, and personal testimonies.
A trained two-person team, one being an individual who shares their own journey with a diagnosable mental health condition, delivers the program. Students learn about symptoms and indicators of mental illness and are given resources aimed at helping themselves, their friends, or family members who may be in need of support.
At the conclusion of the presentation, students are given resource cards with valuable phone numbers and websites of mental health agencies and youth support services, along with a list of symptoms/warning signs of mental illness. Postcards are mailed home to parents informing them about the presentation.
Moving stories from positive role models have the power to change kids’ views. The discussion gives students the rare opportunity to ask questions about mental health challenges to people who have lived it. The presentation’s message of empathy and hope encourages students to actively care for themselves and their friends. It also teaches them it’s okay to talk about what they’re feeling. ETS covers:
1. Early warning signs
2. Facts and statistics about youth and mental health conditions
3. When, where, and how to get help for themselves or their friends
4. When it’s not okay to keep a secret

Project Title: Youth Creative Writing
Project Description:

‍The Porch youth program fosters emerging writers, ages 7-18, by providing opportunities for Middle Tennessee youth to learn and practice creative writing in its many forms and build community with other young literary artists. Youth programs use writing to foster creativity, confidence, introspection, and empathy. Workshop offerings include a variety of genres, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and creating comics.

Youth programs include craft workshops, partnerships with afterschool programs, and collaborations with other non-profit arts organizations within the community, all of which aim to expose youth to multidisciplinary art mediums.

In addition to our ongoing classes, The Porch holds two annual youth creative writing summer camps. Writing camp teaches youth the skills famous writers use to kickstart their stories and poems through various writing activities and creative prompts.

The goal of The Porch youth programs is to provide and promote a vibrant community of young writers in the greater Nashville area, ensuring these writers have resources and mentorship opportunities to help them grow their passion and hone their craft. We want young people of Middle Tennessee to value their voices and have easy access to platforms where they can express their ideas.

The secondary goal of youth programming is to ease the burden on public schools and institutions that are often unable to provide specialized writing instruction due to lack of funding, time, and other constraints.

Total Project Budget: $15,000

Project Title: Music Matters
Project Description:

To help provide positive creative outlets where no child is turned away, BGCV is asking for support of $15,000 to expand learning opportunities by providing free music lessons and recording opportunities. Forte for Children, a foundation funded by Directed Electronics that has funded our music program since 2008 is ending. Our music program is popular and provides many kids with their first consistent foray into exploring new forms of music. Music boosts social and emotional skills as well as helping kids academically by interweaving math and language skills along the way. BGCV offers guitar, piano, drums and vocal lessons 5 days a week in a recording studio. Lessons are split into tiers depending on music experience to strengthen their musical skills. This program provides Club members with the discipline to learn to play an instrument, record and mix music in a safe, positive setting open throughout the year. Club members engage in group activities, private lessons, and practice and “jam” sessions. Upon successful progress, Club members will learn how to set up and record in the studio. They will also be able to hypothesize and study the various effects in terms of various equipment positioning, cables, effects, etc.

Project Title: Valley Pre-School Scholarship Program
Project Description:

The purpose of this grant is to both continue and expand our scholarship program. We want to be able to provide scholarships for low income families and to ensure that our organization is able to remain financially viable despite the changing economy. Despite lower enrollment and the financial toll the pandemic took on our organization, we are still proud to provide two 50% tuition scholarships to families in need who meet the income requirements decided by the town. While we would love to be able to provide more scholarships, we are not in the financial position to do so. This grant would allow us to offer more partial scholarships to families in need. We want to be able to encourage families of varying economic statuses to choose Valley Pre-School for their children and to continue providing a safe, engaging environment for our children to play and learn.

Unfortunately, low income families often are not given the opportunity to choose which type of early childhood education is best for their children. Often-times the subsidized/free daycare and public preschool options follow a traditional curriculum. While this might be a good option for many children, a family’s income should not dictate that choice for them. Play based learning is an important option for all families, regardless of income, and parents should be able to choose this for their children.

Play-based learning is at the core of Valley Pre-School’s curriculum. Through play, children learn how to independently problem-solve, share, regulate their emotions, and how to communicate effectively with their peers. By providing scholarships to low income families, we can give more children the opportunity to grow and learn through play. Families, regardless of their income level, deserve to make this decision for their children, and the children deserve to have this opportunity.

Total Project Budget: $8,900 ($3,900 is what we currently offer in scholarships)

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We take $3,900 from our budget to provide two scholarships.

Project Title: The GROUNDS Post Placement Adoption Services
Project Description:

The mental health toll that foster care and adoption takes on the child, the parents and any other family members is significant. Many believe that reunification or adoption are the finish lines in the work of supporting children in foster care but these are really the starting block of working through the trauma the child has incurred. Because many adoption agencies wrap up their services and supports when the placement is finalized, the family often faces a very difficult time working through that trauma and the behaviors that accompany that trauma. Because of the lack of ongoing support, there has been a concerning trend of post-placement disruptions where the adopted child ends up back in foster care, only exacerbating the behaviors and delaying their healing. In fact, it is estimated that 10-25% of adoptions will end up disrupting.

In light of this trend, Caring for Kids is committed to becoming the premier provider of adoption competent, trauma informed counseling and behavioral health services in Northeast Ohio. CFK soft-launched post-placement support services in 2023 with 295 counseling sessions. This confirmed the need for these supports is undeniably high.

As CFK moves toward a hard-launch of these counseling and behavioral health services, the new office suite space must be retro-fitted to provide six counseling spaces customized to promote healing and safety for children and families alike.

The cost for the counseling and behavioral health services is anticipated to be $275,000 in 2024. $6,000 of this will go towards demolition, $26,000 toward renovation, $43,000 toward furnishings, and $200,000 toward staffing.

Caring for Kids is asking $5,000 from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to go toward our staffing needs. These funds will cover the $5,000 cost of adoption competent certification ($1,250 per certification, resulting in 4 adoption competent certified CFK counselors).

Total Project Budget: $275,000
