Project Title: The GROUNDS Post Placement Adoption Services
Project Description:
The mental health toll that foster care and adoption takes on the child, the parents and any other family members is significant. Many believe that reunification or adoption are the finish lines in the work of supporting children in foster care but these are really the starting block of working through the trauma the child has incurred. Because many adoption agencies wrap up their services and supports when the placement is finalized, the family often faces a very difficult time working through that trauma and the behaviors that accompany that trauma. Because of the lack of ongoing support, there has been a concerning trend of post-placement disruptions where the adopted child ends up back in foster care, only exacerbating the behaviors and delaying their healing. In fact, it is estimated that 10-25% of adoptions will end up disrupting.
In light of this trend, Caring for Kids is committed to becoming the premier provider of adoption competent, trauma informed counseling and behavioral health services in Northeast Ohio. CFK soft-launched post-placement support services in 2023 with 295 counseling sessions. This confirmed the need for these supports is undeniably high.
As CFK moves toward a hard-launch of these counseling and behavioral health services, the new office suite space must be retro-fitted to provide six counseling spaces customized to promote healing and safety for children and families alike.
The cost for the counseling and behavioral health services is anticipated to be $275,000 in 2024. $6,000 of this will go towards demolition, $26,000 toward renovation, $43,000 toward furnishings, and $200,000 toward staffing.
Caring for Kids is asking $5,000 from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to go toward our staffing needs. These funds will cover the $5,000 cost of adoption competent certification ($1,250 per certification, resulting in 4 adoption competent certified CFK counselors).
