Project Title: Youth Creative Writing
Project Description:
The Porch youth program fosters emerging writers, ages 7-18, by providing opportunities for Middle Tennessee youth to learn and practice creative writing in its many forms and build community with other young literary artists. Youth programs use writing to foster creativity, confidence, introspection, and empathy. Workshop offerings include a variety of genres, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and creating comics.
Youth programs include craft workshops, partnerships with afterschool programs, and collaborations with other non-profit arts organizations within the community, all of which aim to expose youth to multidisciplinary art mediums.
In addition to our ongoing classes, The Porch holds two annual youth creative writing summer camps. Writing camp teaches youth the skills famous writers use to kickstart their stories and poems through various writing activities and creative prompts.
The goal of The Porch youth programs is to provide and promote a vibrant community of young writers in the greater Nashville area, ensuring these writers have resources and mentorship opportunities to help them grow their passion and hone their craft. We want young people of Middle Tennessee to value their voices and have easy access to platforms where they can express their ideas.
The secondary goal of youth programming is to ease the burden on public schools and institutions that are often unable to provide specialized writing instruction due to lack of funding, time, and other constraints.
