Project Title: Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee’s StartUp Initiative
Project Description:

At Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee (JA), we give young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make informed academic and economic choices. Our programs are centered on financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship. Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is the largest school district within our 22-county region serving 81,334 students; 55% are from low-to-moderate income families. JA is requesting $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation for our StartUp Initiative. StartUp provides economic inclusion and shared prosperity by continuing to reach underserved students throughout MNPS.

Through StartUp, MNPS students are provided equitable access to financial education regardless of background, ability or financial need. Prior to our initiative, cost and transportation barriers separated MNPS students from participating in two of JA’s powerful programs: JA BizTown (JABT) and JA Finance Park (JAFP). JABT combines in-classroom learning with a day-long visit to a simulated town at our facility. This popular program allows 5th grade students to manage businesses, write checks, acquire healthcare insurance, vote for mayor, and much more. JAFP is a personal finance planning and career exploration simulation on-site at our facility. Following in-classroom instruction, upper middle and high school students experience a realistic life scenario and tailor a personal budget based on provided income, employment, credit score, and family dynamic.

JA’s StartUp subsidizes the out-of-pocket student fee and schedules charter bus transportation for schools who need it. The cost of sending a student through JABT or JAFP is $85 when transportation is needed ($60 curriculum + $25 transportation). Partnering with JA in our mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy, support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would allow 118 students to participate in our financial capstone programming.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 14, 2024
Requested Amount: $6000

Project Title: After School & Recreation Programs for Students with Complex Disabilities
Project Description:

Keshet is at the forefront of disability inclusion by creating a community of belonging where people of all abilities learn, play, work, live and grow together. Through schools, recreation, vocational support and residential homes, 600 people with disabilities benefit directly from Keshet support with another 4,000+ community members impacted each year. Keshet serves people with complex needs and from all backgrounds, with a commitment that no one should be turned away for an inability to pay for services.

Keshet seeks funding to expand after school activities for students with complex disabilities. For parents, it is difficult to find extracurricular options for their children with disabilities, and, when they do, the programs are often beyond their means. Their children do not get the social connections, mental wellness, physical health and self-confidence that comes with participation and, as working parents, they don’t have childcare.

Keshet recognizes that quality education includes learning that takes place outside of the classroom. Our youth programs provide opportunities for students to explore their interests, try new things and gain valuable life skills. Through music, fitness, art, cooking, drama and more, students develop motor skills, practice social skills, and get a boost to their self-esteem.

Even though Keshet does everything possible to keep costs low, the fees associated with after school and recreation are out of reach for many families. At Keshet’s schools, 42% of students come from low-income households. These families and many others in our community cannot afford to send their kids to these programs, and the students are missing out of the gaining skills that allow them to succeed and achieve their full potential.

With $6000, Keshet can make programs available to 12-15 students with disabilities at low or no cost, providing meaningful growth students, snacks and meals, and critical childcare for working parents.

Project Title: The Multicultural Teacher Training Program (MTTP)
Project Description:

The Multicultural Teacher Training Program (MTTP) is a crucial initiative aimed at preparing youth ages 18-21 for a career as culturally competent classroom instructors and teachers. The transition phase from student to student-teacher is a pivotal opportunity to adequately prepare Black youth to become exceptional teachers who serve marginalized communities of color. WCWMAD aims to equip student-teachers with the skills and confidence needed to successfully navigate their careers.

MTTP will provide aspiring teachers with 480 hours of hands-on learning experiences that will build a foundation for incomparable, compassionate, qualified teachers. Why Can’t We Make a Difference, through the MTTP, represents a learning community of professionals who support individuals interested in shaping the future of marginalized youth through teaching. The three primary goals of the program are to:
• increase the number of multicultural teachers who are adequately equipped to provide instruction to diverse population within marginalized regions of Los Angeles
• prepare a diverse teaching force of instructors who are prepared to teach, especially in high-need areas such as mathematics, science, special education, and bilingual education
• provide ongoing, high-quality support to aspiring teachers on their path to earning their teaching credential
• prepare teachers for the unique needs and rigors of educating marginalized youth of color

Teacher preparation plays an important role in teacher success (Bacharach et al., 2010). Research indicates that teachers who are well prepared and trained in the communities they will work have the greatest influence on student achievement (Wilson et al., 2001). Ensuring teacher success and preparation ensures that students have a higher level of opportunity for academic success. The MTTP provides mentorship/coaching, classroom experience, curriculum development training, and ongoing professional development to enhances and build on the participant’s experiences. The goal is for the MTTP participants to become experts in providing instruction to underserved populations.

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Major Programs
Project Description:

Since 2008 the goal of Loop It Up Savannah has been to use expressive arts and innovative curricula to advance achievement and well-being among students living in under-resourced communities, and who attend Title I schools and early learning centers serving the same demographic. Our programs allow us to reduce disparities in basic knowledge and/or learning readiness, and contribute to the social and emotional well-being of our participants.

We are seeking support for our three major programs:

1. Looping Literacy Together is a multi-layered early literacy program targeting Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade 1. The program includes an arts-integrated early literacy curriculum based on specially selected, age-appropriate texts, and the Book Box Library project, in which children design take-home libraries.

2. The Mindfulness Zone offers children a toolkit for addressing emotionally challenging circumstances that arise in school, at home, and among community members. The program uses mindfulness practice, yoga, and expressive arts, and works with children to develop self-understanding and empathetic relationships. The curriculum for this program has been adapted to serve Pre-K through Grade 12.

3. The STEAM Dream program uses project-based learning to encourage extended investigations of complex questions, problems, or challenges students encounter within their communities. We have created a school gardening program that teaches the basics of gardening and preparing healthy meals, and offers a source of supplementary, nutrient rich foods to the school communities. This program serves Pre-K through Grade 12.

Emphasis in each program is placed on critical thinking, reading, writing, the expressive use of imagery, on both individual and collaborative work, on gaining interpersonal communication skills, and in making thoughtful observations about the work and struggles of others. Our goal is to simultaneously raise the levels of social, academic, and emotional competence among students using an arts-based, mindful, exploratory, and collaborative approach to learning.

Project Title: Bright Box
Project Description:

Bright Spot Network is a national nonprofit supporting families navigating a parent’s cancer diagnosis through opportunities for individual and familial healing and reconnection. Our programs range from tools to talk to kids about cancer, family connections through art, support groups for parents, groups for children and educational resources for parents.

Bright Spot Network is requesting $10,000 to support our Bright Box art program. This popular program is free and provides meaningful moments of (re)connection and exploration for Bright Spot children. A Bright Box contains six simple art projects that have been designed for children who have a parent recovering from cancer treatment. These art projects keep children busy while a parent is resting, provide an easy activity that allows for quality time between a caregiver and child, and gives a sense of normalcy. As one parent explained, “In her own little world that felt out of control, [my daughter’s Bright Box projects] gave her something of her own. The projects are still hanging proudly and she moved them occasionally to other spots in the house, telling me that what she created matters to her… It is so essential, this reminder that who you are and what you bring into the world still deeply matters.”

When a parent is undergoing cancer treatment, children are more likely to suffer from loneliness, isolation, and depression. With opportunities to find meaningful connections, those negative experiences decrease. Over 90% of Bright Box recipients told us that Bright Box increased or greatly increased their connection to their children. Our Bright Box program has grown from supporting 144 families in 2021 to almost 791 in 2023. We plan to distribute 1000 Bright Boxes in 2024. With the help of the Hermanowski Foundation we will be able to continue this growth.
