Project Title: Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee’s StartUp Initiative
Project Description:

At Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee (JA), we give young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make informed academic and economic choices. Our programs are centered on financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship. Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is the largest school district within our 22-county region serving 81,334 students; 55% are from low-to-moderate income families. JA is requesting $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation for our StartUp Initiative. StartUp provides economic inclusion and shared prosperity by continuing to reach underserved students throughout MNPS.

Through StartUp, MNPS students are provided equitable access to financial education regardless of background, ability or financial need. Prior to our initiative, cost and transportation barriers separated MNPS students from participating in two of JA’s powerful programs: JA BizTown (JABT) and JA Finance Park (JAFP). JABT combines in-classroom learning with a day-long visit to a simulated town at our facility. This popular program allows 5th grade students to manage businesses, write checks, acquire healthcare insurance, vote for mayor, and much more. JAFP is a personal finance planning and career exploration simulation on-site at our facility. Following in-classroom instruction, upper middle and high school students experience a realistic life scenario and tailor a personal budget based on provided income, employment, credit score, and family dynamic.

JA’s StartUp subsidizes the out-of-pocket student fee and schedules charter bus transportation for schools who need it. The cost of sending a student through JABT or JAFP is $85 when transportation is needed ($60 curriculum + $25 transportation). Partnering with JA in our mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy, support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would allow 118 students to participate in our financial capstone programming.
