Project Title: MOBILE STEM LABS: Transforming the lives of underserved youth
Project Description:
Avalon Carver, through Mobile STEM Labs, serves culturally diverse students and works towards eliminating disparities in access to STEM education that disproportionately affect underserved schools by:
• Building equitable STEM Learning Communities for K-12 students
• Providing high-quality professional development models for staff and administrators
• Supporting teachers by equipping classrooms with materials, equipment, and support personnel to increase STEM Literacy
• Partnering with schools and STEM industry leaders
• Implementing Next Generation Science Standards hands-on curriculum
• Innovating STEM Literacy to enhance fine motor skills and build on ELA Common Core standards
Mobile STEM Labs is an educational program dedicated to (1) eliminating the disparities in access to quality STEM) education, (2) promoting STEM literacy for all students and (3) inspiring the next generation of scientist, doctors, engineers, technologists and entrepreneurs. Accomplishing these goals will ensure the next generation is well equipped to solve global challenges such as climate change, securing cyberspace, and sustaining land and oceans to name a few. MSL collaborates with underrepresented low-income K-12th grade schools to provide students with authentic STEM learning experiences. Research shows early exposure to scientific principles and how science applies to everyday life can increase a student’s motivation toward college and a STEM related career.
MSLs curriculum is carefully curated by STEM curriculum experts with an interdisciplinary hands-on approach. It integrates exploratory learning, discovery, critical thinking and problem-solving that requires students to actively engage a situation to find creative solutions. In 60 to 90-minute sessions over 24 weeks, and with a focus on experiential learning, we help students develop important life skills such as teamwork, troubleshooting, diligence, problem solving, innovation, and critical thinking. Following is a brief description of the primary content areas of our curriculum.
