Project Title: Major Programs
Project Description:

Since 2008 the goal of Loop It Up Savannah has been to use expressive arts and innovative curricula to advance achievement and well-being among students living in under-resourced communities, and who attend Title I schools and early learning centers serving the same demographic. Our programs allow us to reduce disparities in basic knowledge and/or learning readiness, and contribute to the social and emotional well-being of our participants.

We are seeking support for our three major programs:

1. Looping Literacy Together is a multi-layered early literacy program targeting Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade 1. The program includes an arts-integrated early literacy curriculum based on specially selected, age-appropriate texts, and the Book Box Library project, in which children design take-home libraries.

2. The Mindfulness Zone offers children a toolkit for addressing emotionally challenging circumstances that arise in school, at home, and among community members. The program uses mindfulness practice, yoga, and expressive arts, and works with children to develop self-understanding and empathetic relationships. The curriculum for this program has been adapted to serve Pre-K through Grade 12.

3. The STEAM Dream program uses project-based learning to encourage extended investigations of complex questions, problems, or challenges students encounter within their communities. We have created a school gardening program that teaches the basics of gardening and preparing healthy meals, and offers a source of supplementary, nutrient rich foods to the school communities. This program serves Pre-K through Grade 12.

Emphasis in each program is placed on critical thinking, reading, writing, the expressive use of imagery, on both individual and collaborative work, on gaining interpersonal communication skills, and in making thoughtful observations about the work and struggles of others. Our goal is to simultaneously raise the levels of social, academic, and emotional competence among students using an arts-based, mindful, exploratory, and collaborative approach to learning.
