Project Title: Empowering Youth Through Digital Outreach: Expanding the Elder Wisdom Circle’s Impact
Project Description:

This project is a request for $8,000 to institute digital marketing strategies to reach diverse youth across the United States.

Elder Wisdom Circle’s mission is to utilize the wisdom of older adults in providing caring advice to other generations, especially young people aged 16-25, who need the support of an adult in addressing significant challenges in their lives. We have been providing advice to younger generations for over 22 years. We have answered over 500,000 requests for advice. We know that families with children are stressed; young people living in poverty are stressed; and teens struggle with anxiety and depression. Our Elders answer advice letters via our website where advice-seekers submit an email about their challenge, and elders respond to them with a free, confidential, personalized response based on their own life experiences. As an all-virtual organization, we receive requests from across the US.

We know from research on human development that social-emotional wellness is built through positive relationships with important people in our lives. We are social beings who need to be in caring relationships to thrive. When young people receive nonjudgmental and caring advice from a compassionate adult, they can pause, reflect, and use their skills to regulate their emotions, which in turn helps them in family and community relationships.

The demand for our work continues to stay at a high level but we know we are not reaching all the young people who can benefit. EWC wants to be the free “go-to” provider of free, caring, nonjudgmental advice, educating and supporting young advice-seekers in meeting their non-acute mental health needs and flourishing in their lives. This grant request would support increased organizational capacity to create and distribute our brand mechanisms that would allow EWC to expand its work to reach more young people.

Project Title: AASK Mentoring Program
Project Description:

The number of youth in foster care exceeds the number of homes available to care and house, leaving many youth in congregate care where their basic needs are met. Still, they aren’t receiving the same one-on-one attention their peers in family settings receive.

AASK’s mentoring program matches these youth with a volunteer mentor, allowing them to explore hobbies and interests, improve academic performance, prepare for adulthood, and gain confidence.

Youth with a mentor reduce their risk for drug and alcohol addiction, are more likely to graduate high school, and reduce their risk of incarceration and unstable housing and employment.

Project Title: Emergency Fund
Project Description:

A child’s brain develops faster from birth to age 5 than at any other time. These critical developmental years set the groundwork for future life outcomes. Yet, for many children living in communities left under resourced by decades of historical and institutional racism, their families cannot find, afford, or access quality early education and care.

DLEC is guided by the belief that our society can only become just when all its young children have access to high-quality, multicultural, early learning opportunities regardless of race, heritage, citizenship, or economic status. Our purpose is to promote school readiness through our early education centers, home visiting program and free weekly story at 3 local libraries. We prepare families for a lifetime of success by partnering with expectant families prior to the child’s birth and into the child’s early years (ages 0-5).

Our funding request is to help support the agency’s greatest needs. Currently our greatest needs are supporting the children and families we serve and their basic needs. Funds would be used to provide educational materials to children during the summer, purchasing bus tickets and supplying the emergency fund that families can access. The end of the Eviction Memorandum in Seattle has led to a sharp 10% increase in family homelessness. Our emergency fund is crucial, now more than ever, as we are inundated with families desperately needing help for their immediate crises and basic needs. With the Hermanowski Foundation’s support, DLEC is at a critical juncture to alter the futures of vulnerable children and their families by providing essential necessities.

Project Title: Sght 4 Success – Utah
Project Description:

At Eye Care 4 Kids, we believe every child who needs glasses should have them, regardless of socio-economic circumstances. Our mission is to provide professional vision care to low-income, visually impaired children and families. We recognize the inherent link between vision and education and are dedicated to giving all students the best chance at academic, social, and emotional success. Through the commitment of our network of community supporters, we remove barriers to good vision—there should not be social inequality for children in providing this basic service.

A high-impact solution to healthcare inequality, EyeCare4Kids’ Sight 4 Success campaign is designed to make vital vision care services accessible to families from diverse backgrounds with limited financial resources. The “SEE-MORE” Mobile Vision Clinic brings the full menu of vision care services to schools, community centers, rural areas, and Native American reservations throughout the State.

All children visiting our vision clinic receive a vision screening by a qualified technician, a vision evaluation and eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, and a quality pair of eyeglasses made in our state-of-the-art optical lab to their exact prescription (when needed). The eyewear package includes new frames with polycarbonate, scratch-resistant corrective lenses and UV coating, and a soft case. We negotiate with the largest manufacturers to get the latest styles and sizes. Our products have not been previously used or recycled.

Given today’s historic inflation, EyeCare4Kids is experiencing increased demand for help from parents, teachers, and community leaders looking for an affordable option to receive professional vision care. A new $6,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will enable Eye Care 4 Kids to provide 300 vision care services for low-income children in the State of Utah.

Project Title: Advocating for Abused and Neglected Children with Open Cases Before the Court
Project Description:

Since 1989, Fairfax CASA has served almost 9,000 abused children by providing a vetted, trained and dedicated volunteer (a CASA), who ensures that the voices of these vulnerable children are heard, and that they do not slip through the cracks of the chaotic child welfare system. The majority of our children are separated from their parents and removed from everything and everyone they know; their lives change in an instant. While in the system, most children experience at least two foster home placements, school changes, and multiple social workers. Siblings are sometimes separated, children are placed in treatment facilities, and visitation with parents occurs once or twice per week and is closely supervised. Throughout their time in this system, there is one person who will be there from the beginning, until the very end of their case: Their CASA. Fairfax CASAs stay on their cases until closure (an average of 23 months, but we have had cases stay open as long as 10 years).

CASAs act as the “eyes and ears” of the Court, by getting to know the children (visiting at least twice/month), observing the relationships with their parents, checking in with service providers and schools, monitoring the status of court-ordered services, and listening to the children. They write comprehensive reports, with recommendations, for every hearing. They keep the focus of these cases on the children.

Post-pandemic, we have experienced a surge in substance abuse, mental health issues and domestic violence. Last year, we experienced a 137% increase in cases, serving more children (367) than we have in over a decade, and we are on track to serve even more this year. 100% of our funding comes from competitive grants, donations and events. A $10,000 grant would cover the cost of one year of advocacy for five children.
