Project Title: Emergency Fund
Project Description:

A child’s brain develops faster from birth to age 5 than at any other time. These critical developmental years set the groundwork for future life outcomes. Yet, for many children living in communities left under resourced by decades of historical and institutional racism, their families cannot find, afford, or access quality early education and care.

DLEC is guided by the belief that our society can only become just when all its young children have access to high-quality, multicultural, early learning opportunities regardless of race, heritage, citizenship, or economic status. Our purpose is to promote school readiness through our early education centers, home visiting program and free weekly story at 3 local libraries. We prepare families for a lifetime of success by partnering with expectant families prior to the child’s birth and into the child’s early years (ages 0-5).

Our funding request is to help support the agency’s greatest needs. Currently our greatest needs are supporting the children and families we serve and their basic needs. Funds would be used to provide educational materials to children during the summer, purchasing bus tickets and supplying the emergency fund that families can access. The end of the Eviction Memorandum in Seattle has led to a sharp 10% increase in family homelessness. Our emergency fund is crucial, now more than ever, as we are inundated with families desperately needing help for their immediate crises and basic needs. With the Hermanowski Foundation’s support, DLEC is at a critical juncture to alter the futures of vulnerable children and their families by providing essential necessities.
