Project Title: HomeAid Family CareCenter
Project Description:

As is widely known, California is suffering a homelessness crisis, causing the economic disruption of entire communities, and putting the futures of many children in jeopardy. In Southern California, the average cost of living has outpaced average wages, leading many vulnerable groups to lose their housing and enter the cycle of homelessness. There are approximately 270 unsheltered families experiencing homelessness specifically in Orange County, California. One of the leading beacons of hope for ending family homelessness in Orange County is the Family CareCenter, a 56-bed emergency shelter specifically for families with minor children under 18. Open 365 days a year, the CareCenter supports up to 450 parents and children annually on the return to stable housing through housing navigation and other resources & services. The CareCenter is designed to keep families together and ensure the best outcomes for children experiencing homelessness, allowing them to build bright futures. Since its opening in 2017, the CareCenter has served over 1,500 adults and their children on their journey out of homelessness.

In recognition of its importance to Orange County’s system of ending homelessness, the CareCenter has been approved to increase capacity from 56 to 80 beds. As owners of the CareCenter, we at HomeAid OC are seeking funds to both increase capacity and upgrade facilities ensuring the health and safety of all that enter the CareCenter on their journey back to permanent stabilized housing. A charitable gift from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will help us continue the CareCenter’s work through the provision of meals, hygiene items, and coordination of needed maintenance, and upgrade of the facilities. You can help us keep the CareCenter a safe, dignified, and thriving place for children and families to receive support to return to stable housing.

Project Title: Kids Run Club Program
Project Description:

Active Southern West Virginia’s Kids Run Club program is a transformative initiative aimed at instilling healthy habits and fostering a love for physical activity among children in our community. Operating within elementary schools throughout West Virginia, our program provides children with the necessary tools to succeed and achieve their full potential by instilling essential life skills through weekly club meetings. Led by dedicated teacher and parent volunteers, our free to participate clubs engage children aged 6 to 12, many living in underserved communities, in regular exercise through the joy of running. Through various activities and games, children develop endurance, strength, and agility in a supportive and inclusive environment. Whether running laps on a track, exploring nature trails, or participating in fun relay races, every session is tailored to make exercise enjoyable and rewarding.

Active SWV provides the framework, coaches training, ongoing support, a $250 mini-grant per club, and pre and post surveys to track youth participation throughout each club. Beyond physical fitness, the Kids Run Club emphasizes goal setting, perseverance, and teamwork. Participants learn valuable life skills as they set and achieve personal milestones, overcome challenges, and support their peers along the way. By fostering a sense of community and camaraderie, we create a supportive network that encourages healthy lifestyles for children and families alike.

Together, we can inspire a generation of young individuals who are enthusiastic about leading active, healthy lives. By instilling the joy of running and promoting physical fitness from an early age, we lay the foundation for a brighter, healthier future for our community.

Join us as we lace up our sneakers, hit the pavement, and make strides towards a happier, healthier tomorrow. Together, we can empower children to embrace an active lifestyle and thrive both on and off the track.

Requested Amount: 8,000

Project Title: Empowering Youth Through Digital Outreach: Expanding the Elder Wisdom Circle’s Impact
Project Description:

This project is a request for $8,000 to institute digital marketing strategies to reach diverse youth across the United States.

Elder Wisdom Circle’s mission is to utilize the wisdom of older adults in providing caring advice to other generations, especially young people aged 16-25, who need the support of an adult in addressing significant challenges in their lives. We have been providing advice to younger generations for over 22 years. We have answered over 500,000 requests for advice. We know that families with children are stressed; young people living in poverty are stressed; and teens struggle with anxiety and depression. Our Elders answer advice letters via our website where advice-seekers submit an email about their challenge, and elders respond to them with a free, confidential, personalized response based on their own life experiences. As an all-virtual organization, we receive requests from across the US.

We know from research on human development that social-emotional wellness is built through positive relationships with important people in our lives. We are social beings who need to be in caring relationships to thrive. When young people receive nonjudgmental and caring advice from a compassionate adult, they can pause, reflect, and use their skills to regulate their emotions, which in turn helps them in family and community relationships.

The demand for our work continues to stay at a high level but we know we are not reaching all the young people who can benefit. EWC wants to be the free “go-to” provider of free, caring, nonjudgmental advice, educating and supporting young advice-seekers in meeting their non-acute mental health needs and flourishing in their lives. This grant request would support increased organizational capacity to create and distribute our brand mechanisms that would allow EWC to expand its work to reach more young people.

Project Title: AASK Mentoring Program
Project Description:

The number of youth in foster care exceeds the number of homes available to care and house, leaving many youth in congregate care where their basic needs are met. Still, they aren’t receiving the same one-on-one attention their peers in family settings receive.

AASK’s mentoring program matches these youth with a volunteer mentor, allowing them to explore hobbies and interests, improve academic performance, prepare for adulthood, and gain confidence.

Youth with a mentor reduce their risk for drug and alcohol addiction, are more likely to graduate high school, and reduce their risk of incarceration and unstable housing and employment.
