Project Title: Adv0cate Mentorship
Project Description:

Real Champions, Inc. exists to become trusted advocates for children by establishing long-term relationships that lead to greater opportunities in life, school, and work. We empower students to escape the cycle of generational poverty by providing full-time, professional mentors, starting in kindergarten and remaining through high school graduation. Each child is partnered with a dedicated Advocate Mentor, who accompanies the student and family for the duration of his/her K-12 academic career. Advocate Mentors meet weekly with their mentees all year long, even during school breaks. Advocate Mentors work with both the students and their families, facilitating collaboration and advocating for student success in and out of the classroom. They also provide various experiential learning opportunities that underserved children may not have otherwise, such as field trips to the aquarium, theater, or library. Furthermore, Advocate Mentors come alongside the family to ensure that tangible needs are met. This holistic approach provides each child not only with the skills and resources needed to break the cycle of generational poverty, but also with the hope of a brighter future.

We launched our pilot cohort of 24 children in Jasper County in January 2021. Three years later, our program has nearly doubled in size and has an additional site in Charleston County. We are currently serving 51 children and their families, totaling approximately 260 individuals.

Total Project Budget: 1,874,410

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Approximately 200 individual donors and 20 business partners contribute to funding our program each year. Additionally, we receive numerous grants from the state of South Carolina and from foundations, such as The Roger Slater Foundation and Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, which guarantee our ability to stay longer with our children. Further financial details, including specific sources of income and expenses, are available upon request.

Project Title: Clinton Global Initiative:Mindful Moment Program
Project Description:

Holistic Life Foundation (HLF) improves the social-emotional, academic, and mental health of low-income BIPOC underserved communities through a comprehensive approach to yoga, mindfulness, trauma-informed care, youth development, and self-care. Founded as a BIPOC-led nonprofit in Baltimore in 2001, our workshops nurture wellness in schools, recreation centers, group homes, drug treatment centers, homeless shelters, mental crisis facilities, and senior centers. Founders Ali Smith, Atman Smith, and Andres Gonzalez began HLF teaching yoga and mindfulness practices to at-risk youth in their community. HLF has provided over 50,000 hours of yoga and mindfulness training to over 100,000 students from 100 schools nationwide.
Our Mindful Moment Program is a whole school intervention that integrates mindfulness, yoga, and meditation practices into the school day for students, teachers, and staff. Mindful Moment gives preK-12th grade students the age-appropriate skills and emotional capacity to navigate life’s transitions and choices in healthy ways. The program provides a safe space for students who need to cool down and regain control of their emotions and to improve students’ mental health.
Since 2001, HLF has worked with over 5,000 students a week in Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS). In BCPS our Mindful Moment Program has reduced suspensions and fights, healed trauma, and demonstrated positive changes in attendance, GPA, and overall school climate. In recent years we have provided services in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Idaho, the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, New York State, Kentucky, Dorchester County (MD), New Orleans, and Canada. The national news coverage following our “Turning Detention into Meditation” videos going viral brought us to the attention of our partner, The Clinton Foundation, and in 2022 we made a multi-year Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) commitment to implement Mindful Moment programming in Chicago, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Denver. HLF is seeking funding for CGI expansion efforts.

Total Project Budget: $295,292.00 ($49,215 per city)

Project Title: Reading Eggs Literacy Program
Project Description:

Young people in Appalachian Ohio face all the challenges any American child faces with the additional hurdles unique to our region.

Literally every Kindergarten through 6th grade student (180 total) in our school reads below grade level or experiences trouble reading. Therefore, our faculty has targeted the Reading Eggs literacy program to address this deficiency. The software is designed to engage young readers with its bright colors, cute animation and game-like interface. Our faculty believes subscribing to this program will improve our student’s performance and enjoyment of reading.

In order to benefit from using Reading Eggs, the user requires an appropriate computer interface. While older children can use a desktop or laptop computer, the youngest cannot. For this reason the Chromebook touch screens serve an important function. Kindergarten and 1st grade students do not possess the fine motor skills to manipulate a computer mouse, so instead the Chromebooks will allow them to just touch the screen to answer questions or move an icon to the proper place on the screen.

The technology will allow for extended learning time while the game-like nature of the software is designed to induce exploration and fun while learning. The extensive electronic library of books especially designed for each reading level will expose the students to many classic stories and different genres of writing that appeal to any child’s specific taste. Therefore, we have included in our initiative 90 Chromebook tablets requiring approximately $23,000.

We hope you will consider helping us purchase some of the Chromebooks for the 2024-2025 school year.

Thank you for considering our request, and we hope you will allow us to formally submit an application.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Just Us Clinical Counseling
Project Description:

Oasis Center’s “Just Us” is a group of programs offering a full spectrum of services for LGBTQ+ youth in Nashville, TN and surrounding areas. In the last year alone, Just Us served 153 teens through weekly empowerment meetings, student-led activism, and counseling services. Additionally, staff and youth trained over 450 adults in providing culturally appropriate care and services for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Just Us offers group, family, and individual counseling, as well as referrals to medical providers and legal assistance, to youth seeking assistance related to gender identity and/or sexual orientation. Due to societal/family rejection and discrimination, LGBTQ+ teens face exponentially higher risks of experiencing mental health issues. The Just Us Clinical Therapist provides dedicated mental health services in an open, affirming space in which LGBTQ+ youth can feel safe, valued, and empowered. Annual outcomes for the Clinical Therapist include providing counseling to at least 15 youth at any one time, 80% of whom report a reduction in two or more symptoms and/or an increase in coping mechanisms. The therapist also co-leads focus groups for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, contributing research to their development of a training curriculum for parents of LGBTQ+ youth in Tennessee.

A $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would support Oasis Center’s goal of addressing the critical need for mental health care for LGBTQ+ youth. In doing so, these funds would also help prevent the long-term negative outcomes faced by LGBTQ+ youth whose mental health needs go unmet (e.g., poor academic achievement, justice involvement, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation).

Our goal is to provide an outstanding theatre experience for students that will contribute to their maturity and cultivate a lifelong love of both theatre and the outdoors while meeting rigorous artistic and educational standards.

Our classes and camps (for grades 2-12) provide a full continuum of theatre training, from beginner workshops to advanced conservatories. Project Title: STEAM & Trades Academy
Project Description:

The STEAM & Trades Academy provides interactive Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Trade skills to underserved youth in the Chicagoland area. We host monthly Academies throughout the year, geared to teach the basics, as well as advanced skills. During the summer and fall months, we host 2-3 academies weekly to ensure the youth have positive outlets during the city’s most violent months. We target youth in grades three through high school seniors. The academies are separated based on the target age group for each month. We teach skills including Robotics, Coding, Electrical Engineering, Cinematography, Podcasting, Automotive and more. We scaffold instruction to ensure that by the end of the academy, the youth are able to complete skills-based tasks independently. We collaborate with local entrepreneurs, businesses and organizations to ensure we have highly qualified instructors disseminating the information to the youth in a thoughtful, and age appropriate manner. Our academies run in addition to our after-school programs and Trade Day events that act as a culminating space for the academy participants. Many of our youth participate every month. This allows us to track their progress, as well as their needs. Having a highly qualified staff of Educators allows us to smoothly work through lesson adjustments, which in turn leads to a higher level of understanding for the youth. We have successfully completed 3 years of STEAM & Trades Academy programming and have expanded each year to include more engineering and technology driven skills that will prepare our most vulnerable youth for future success in areas that may have been deemed too difficult for them.

Project Description:

Our organization has reached a critical time of growth and is in need of funding for capacity building. This funding will help us obtain & maintain a purchased or leased building to operate and expand our current programs. It will also allow us to hire an Executive Director of operations to oversee this expansion. Through the expansions we will incur additional operating expenses as we endeavor to double our impact and the amount of people we serve.

We serve a unique purpose in our community and provide much needed support to at-risk teens and young adults. Our primary people group is the skateboarding community (skaters and non-skaters alike). We show love, value, and direction to the disoriented youth at the local skate parks. Care is provided for these athletes, their friends, and the other misfits in the community through one-on-one mentorship, meeting basic needs such as regular meals, shoes and clothing as well as a safe, sober indoor environment free of cost. Project Title: E2L’s FIFTEEN Leadership and Life Skills Development Program
Project Description:

E2L is a Black-led organization founded in 1995 that strives to see a generation of diverse at-risk youth move beyond poverty to discover a positive direction in their lives and develop a plan to achieve a productive life. Our mission is to develop and empower Atlanta youth as emerging student leaders who will positively influence their families, schools, communities, and the world. E2L currently serves seven Title 1 schools in City of Atlanta and Fulton and Cobb counties. Graduation rates for these schools are as low as 69.3% compared to the state average of 84.4% and the nation’s almost 87%. The achievement gap translates into a later attainment gap affecting high school graduation, attainment of bachelor’s degrees, and employment. In addition to facing economic obstacles, many of the students in these schools must overcome social and cultural norms that do not embrace academic excellence. A majority of E2L’s students will be the first in their families to pursue post-secondary education, thus breaking the multi-generational cycle of poverty.
E2L’s FIFTEEN leadership and life skills development program is an evidence-based program based on best practices from the National AfterSchool Association that empowers youth to prepare for their future in college and/or career. E2L has researched and developed a model-based curriculum, One Degree Curriculum, that engages and empowers students through activities that foster stability and creativity while providing these youth with the support and resources needed to strengthen and promote self-sufficiency and mental well-being. Through our various program initiatives, FIFTEEN provides direct and integrated services to address the mental and psychological wellbeing, heart and physical health, educational success, financial literacy for individuals and families, and college/career opportunities of each of our youth. The goal of the FIFTEEN program is to support participants in graduating from high school with skills that will lead them to post-secondary education and self-sufficiency through leadership skills and re-engagement with the community.
