Project Title: STEAM & Trades Academy
Project Description:

The STEAM & Trades Academy provides interactive Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Trade skills to underserved youth in the Chicagoland area. We host monthly Academies throughout the year, geared to teach the basics, as well as advanced skills. During the summer and fall months, we host 2-3 academies weekly to ensure the youth have positive outlets during the city’s most violent months. We target youth in grades three through high school seniors. The academies are separated based on the target age group for each month. We teach skills including Robotics, Coding, Electrical Engineering, Cinematography, Podcasting, Automotive and more. We scaffold instruction to ensure that by the end of the academy, the youth are able to complete skills-based tasks independently. We collaborate with local entrepreneurs, businesses and organizations to ensure we have highly qualified instructors disseminating the information to the youth in a thoughtful, and age appropriate manner. Our academies run in addition to our after-school programs and Trade Day events that act as a culminating space for the academy participants. Many of our youth participate every month. This allows us to track their progress, as well as their needs. Having a highly qualified staff of Educators allows us to smoothly work through lesson adjustments, which in turn leads to a higher level of understanding for the youth. We have successfully completed 3 years of STEAM & Trades Academy programming and have expanded each year to include more engineering and technology driven skills that will prepare our most vulnerable youth for future success in areas that may have been deemed too difficult for them.
