Project Title: Just Us Clinical Counseling
Project Description:

Oasis Center’s “Just Us” is a group of programs offering a full spectrum of services for LGBTQ+ youth in Nashville, TN and surrounding areas. In the last year alone, Just Us served 153 teens through weekly empowerment meetings, student-led activism, and counseling services. Additionally, staff and youth trained over 450 adults in providing culturally appropriate care and services for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Just Us offers group, family, and individual counseling, as well as referrals to medical providers and legal assistance, to youth seeking assistance related to gender identity and/or sexual orientation. Due to societal/family rejection and discrimination, LGBTQ+ teens face exponentially higher risks of experiencing mental health issues. The Just Us Clinical Therapist provides dedicated mental health services in an open, affirming space in which LGBTQ+ youth can feel safe, valued, and empowered. Annual outcomes for the Clinical Therapist include providing counseling to at least 15 youth at any one time, 80% of whom report a reduction in two or more symptoms and/or an increase in coping mechanisms. The therapist also co-leads focus groups for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, contributing research to their development of a training curriculum for parents of LGBTQ+ youth in Tennessee.

A $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would support Oasis Center’s goal of addressing the critical need for mental health care for LGBTQ+ youth. In doing so, these funds would also help prevent the long-term negative outcomes faced by LGBTQ+ youth whose mental health needs go unmet (e.g., poor academic achievement, justice involvement, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation).
