Project Title: Core Education and Enrichment
Project Description:

Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County (BGCPBC) is respectfully requesting $10,000 in support of our foundational service, Core Education and Enrichment Programming. From one Clubhouse in 1971, BGCPBC has grown to 20 sites encompassing 7 freestanding Clubs and 13 elementary, middle, and high school Club sites. We serve over 13,000 children, teens and their families annually and are in the top ten of Boys & Girls Clubs of over 5,000 Clubs nationwide.

While most people conjure ideas of great wealth when they hear mention of Palm Beach County, BGCPBC serves extremely low-income, under-resourced children and families: 70% of our members live in single parent/non-traditional households, with 55% of their families earning less than $30,000 a year (with 40% of these earning less than $20,000 annually). 82% of our children and teens qualify for free or reduced lunch at school. 66% of our members are Black/African American, 22% are Hispanic, 8% are Multiracial, and 4% are White.

BGCPBC’s programming is guided by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s (BGCA) Formula for Impact, a researched based youth development theory of change utilizing five critical elements for positive youth development. Core services include:

Education programs that promote self-directed learning, help members acquire positive attitudes toward academic success and provide homework help, tutoring, college and workforce exploration, and 21st-century work skills training,

Health and Life Skills programs that inspire positive choices in the areas of nutrition, fitness, hygiene, personal relationships, and risk avoidance,

Arts programs that enable members to discover new interests, untapped talents, and positive forms of self-expression,

Sports, Fitness, and Wellness programs that foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect for others through athletic leagues and individual sports and fitness,

Leadership and Service programs that guide members in developing a moral compass through leadership building, volunteerism, and community service.

Project Title: Providing Emergency Child Care
Project Description:

Child Care Connections would like $10,000 to fund up to Emergency Child Care for young children ages 0-5, as we have seen this type of fund, and the program we have built around it, makes the most impact to young families, single mothers, and their young children. Emergency Child Care provides up to three months of child care costs and can be used for emergencies, or during a job transition (schooling/re-training), and payments are made directly to licensed or legally operating child care providers. The program also goes beyond child care assistance by offering one-on-one resource meetings with CCC’s Family Engagement Coordinator (FEC). These meetings provide wraparound support to mothers and families, helping them navigate the challenges of parenting and connecting them with additional resources and services. The children receive care, nurturing and the pre-school education that is foundational to building skills that will help them be successful academically and socially. The FEC, who is fluent in Spanish and actively involved in diverse community groups, ensures that the program is inclusive and accessible to all children.

Child Care Connections is a trusted community partner with years of experience and we are committed to meeting the early education and child care needs of Montana’s children. CCC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as the Child Care Resource and Referral Agency in Gallatin, Lewis and Clark, Park, Meagher, Jefferson, and Broadwater Counties. Research demonstrates that consistent nurturing child care, with good parenting, helps children develop to their full potential. Child Care Connections supports families and the local economy by encouraging quality child care and safety while addressing the disparities in early childhood education and child care in Southwest Montana by working in three main areas: availability, affordability, and quality.

Project Title: Write Your Story (WYS): Literacy Building Through Arts Integration
Project Description:

A 2022-23 education report demonstrated 42% of children were ready for kindergarten, with only 29% of those living in poverty ready. Story Tapestries’ improves the literacy level of children in economically challenged and potentially emotionally difficult situations by using multiple arts forms as the vehicle for teaching and learning. According to the teachers surveyed, we have increased students’ literacy levels by 95% supporting their ability to recall stories, answer comprehension questions and tell their story.

WYS is a comprehensive approach to youth development and academic enrichment, using arts-integrated educational experiences taught in collaboration with classroom educators to support social emotional learning (SEL) and academic achievement. Program design includes dedicated co-planning between teaching artists and teachers, conversations with the caregivers, and observation of students in action to ensure curriculum materials reflect SEL and academic needs of the community. This generates engagement & fosters a supportive, identity-safe, inclusive educational setting.

Programs at each school and early childhood center includes: One 1.5-hour interactive family engagement events including food, art-centered workshop, a performance; A 3-Hour workshop for teachers on how to use Arts Integration and Universal Design for Learning to develop students’ SEL and academic skills; an artist-in-residence program directly teaching in PreK – 2nd grade classrooms with arts-integrated activities for students and for teachers to support academic achievement and SEL skills (the artist will be at each site for 10 days, providing a minimum of 5 for up to 10 hours of direct programming in each classroom). When children learn through the arts, evidence-based research shows simultaneous acquisition and reinforcement of academic and social-emotional skills. Improving these foundational skills supports academic achievement. (Johnson-Green & Flannery, 2020)

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 03/31/2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Program Year Round Expansion
Project Description:

The J Noah Skills Academy is an innovative youth mentorship program located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore that teaches middle and high school student-athletes project management skills through the lens of basketball. Our vision is that students who graduate from the Academy will possess the knowledge, tools, and confidence they need to succeed both personally and professionally.

The Academy respectfully requests an invitation to apply for funding to expand our program from serving 10 student-athletes in the summertime only to more than 60 through year-round programming.

The Academy helps student-athletes learn project management tools and their applications in a format that is easily understood through the use of basketball. These tools enable students to better manage the small details and routines of everyday life and provide sought-after skills for when they enter the workforce. The curriculum is based on frameworks provided by the Project Management Institute, which are reinforced with basketball content.

The program consists of two parts: basketball training and classroom time. During basketball training, student-athletes practice drills using a Dr. Dish shooting machine with the ability to track their progress over time. Exercises learned during founder Jordan Pearlstein’s recent certification training with Coach Phil Handy of the LA Lakers are also incorporated. This time helps athletes hone their skills while reinforcing the importance of consistency and discipline when working toward a goal.

During classroom time, students work through a customized curriculum that uses basketball-related examples and terminology to introduce project management concepts, including
time management, goal setting, risk assessment, contingency planning, and more. Students
implement these concepts by using the NBA 2K24 PlayStation video game to complete a series of tasks, culminating in a mock NBA draft. After NBA draft, student-athletes create a Mentee Action Plan, identifying their personal, athletic, and academic goals and create a framework for attainment.

Total Project Budget: $150,000

From last years summer program, we received funding from ARPA Funds, Waddell Foundation, Wal-Mart, Bryan Bros Foundation, and Founder Donations. We have 15 potential funding sources that are currently pending.

Project Title: The Path Line – Bridging Gaps for Children and Youth in Foster Care.
Project Description:

Our mission is to give Middle Tennessee youths in foster care a new path—with a place to call home and a chance to dream. Jonathan’s Path fills a huge void of consistency teens face in foster care including, housing, support, direction and love. No paths are the same, but the love, stability, and support from Jonathan’s Path will be constant for every youth.

Our new Path Line project is the only help line for teens in foster care in Middle Tennessee. The existing nonprofit ecosystem includes help lines for foster parents and adults; however, this approach does not include the voices of youth, resulting in further neglect and hindering them from reaching their potential as independent adults.

The Path Line provides a voice for teens in foster care. Teens ages 13 and older contact us for support or to request needed services, and someone from The Path Line responds within 24 hours! We serve teens experiencing immediate needs and those requesting long term services including mental health care, career counseling, independent living preparation, education, and more. Youth may request immediate or specialized therapeutic services, career mentoring, sports fees or equipment assistance, tutoring, ACT/SAT/GED prep, etc. Others may reach out to us for emergency housing. This occurs most frequently when a teen has aged out of the foster system and does not meet the qualifications for extension of foster care, EFC, in which case they are left to navigate the complexities of adult life without the care of a family or support network.

The Path Line directly supports the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s mission to empower children and young adults, specifically those in foster care, by equipping them to succeed and fulfill their potential in a system historically neglectful of their needs.

Project Title: School Backpack Program: Ensuring Atlanta’s Children are well fed through the weekend
Project Description:

Reflections’ mission is to meet the basic needs of impoverished individuals in crisis with food and clothing and through doing so, offer additional resources and support to improve the trajectory of their lives. For over 20 years, Reflections of Trinity has been offering compassionate services to support local families in crisis, those caught in the cycle of poverty and continually struggling to obtain the most basic human needs: food, clothing, and shelter.

Reflections of Trinity is respectfully seeking a charitable gift of $10,000 to support our School Backpack program. According to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, 10% of children in Atlanta are food insecure. Funding will aid in supporting operations and replenishing diminishing food stocks to ensure that 300 students from 3 local, Title 1 schools have 10 lb. boxes of food to take home each weekend. Each Thursday, simple to prepare weekend meal supplies are assembled and distributed for students to take home to share with their families. Counselors and social workers aid in identifying those students most in need and at-risk for going hungry.

Other Programs Include: Reflections’ Team 58 Food Pantry distributes food on Saturday mornings at our Team 58 Food Pantry to 1,200 families weekly. Food is shared via a volunteer-staffed drive-through. Each client/family receives an 85-100 lbs. box of assorted fresh and non-perishable foods (fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, snacks, and canned goods). In our experiences, the average need is 3-6 months of consistent weekly food support to gain strong enough financial security to wean themselves from relying on food assistance. Our Senior Food Program delivers food each Tuesday directly to eight HUD (subsidized housing for low-income) senior citizen communities located in Cobb, Paulding, and Fulton counties. Each senior receives a seven-day supply of nutritious food. Our senior program reaches 1,000 seniors each month.

Project Title: Crisis nursery
Project Description:

Our organization is dedicated to mitigating childhood trauma, with a core focus on fostering a healthier community. We recognize the cumulative effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that resonate throughout an individual’s life, leading to chronic health conditions, mental health challenges, risky behaviors, and adverse social outcomes. To break this cycle, we are committed to promoting resilience and cultivating positive childhood experiences. Inspired by the Crisis Nursery model, our transformative initiative seeks to intervene early, providing immediate support to families and establishing a foundation for long-term well-being, thus mitigating the lasting effects of childhood trauma on individuals and the broader community.

Our Crisis Nursery Model encompasses key components aimed at achieving our mission:

Immediate Emergency Childcare and Respite Care:
Recognizing the vulnerability of infants and young children, especially in families facing poverty and crises, we provide immediate emergency childcare and respite care for families with children aged newborn-6.

Safe and Non-judgmental Environments:
Our crisis nursery serves as a safe, non-judgmental space that destigmatizes seeking help. We view asking for assistance as a sign of strength, not weakness.

Educational and Trauma-Informed Support:
We offer an educational and trauma-informed environment for children, fostering positive experiences that contribute to resilience. Parents, assured of their children’s safety, can focus on finding resources to promote resilience for the entire family.

Comprehensive Support Beyond Childcare:
Going beyond immediate childcare, our crisis nursery assists families in accessing resources for homelessness, mental health, immigration, and hunger. We provide essential items such as diapers and baby items, alleviating stress and ensuring families always have support in times of need.
