Project Description:

Elevated Outcomes is a leadership development program that supports young minority girls and women through mentorship, coaching, and educational workshops. This program is one of several entry points for young women of color to engage in Ambassadors of Change programs.
AOC fundamentally shares in the mission to encourage, empower, and enlighten communities, states, and nations. Elevated Outcomes will cultivate an expansion mindset through educational forums and events that impact our communities and subsequently our nation and the world.

Program participants will leave the Elevated Outcomes events with increased confidence, knowledge, and a sense of empowerment to become agents of change in their communities and to advocate for causes they are passionate about.

Elevated Outcomes strives to remove perceived and systematic barriers that prevent young minority girls and women from attaining their optimal success as leaders in all endeavors. A staggering 75% of minority girls and young women struggle with low self-esteem, leading them to engage in harmful behaviors such as drugs, drinking, bullying, eating disorders, and suicidal thoughts. Additionally, young minority women say that the top three biggest barriers to taking on leadership roles and changing their communities are being laughed at, speaking in front of others, and shyness.

AOC staff will work to empower 500 minority girls and young women by hosting 10 annual events in Georgia, Texas, and Alabama. The events will teach self-advocacy, self-love, resume building, interview skills, and communicating with impact.

Our goal is to engage young minority girls and women by enhancing their knowledge, expanding their access to resources, and providing them with the confidence that excellence is attainable.

Project Title: Let’s STEAM into Reading
Project Description:

Impact STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Academy (ISA), the community-based service of Impact Church (formerly known as Canaan Land Church International) was created to improve elementary students reading and math skills through STEAM projects. This enrichment program provided after school connects and extends the skills the students are learning in school to real life application. The goal is to encourage and inspire the students to explore the careers of tomorrow through leadership development and academic excellence. ISA serves students in the South Gwinnett area where 75% of the student population qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. According to standardized test scores, 37% – 42% of the students scored below grade level in reading and math. Let’s STEAM into Reading is designed to integrate reading with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math using hands-on activities. This literacy-based program combines foundational reading skills along with accelerated learning strategies for academic success. Students read, write, and build vocabulary, while solving problems in each of the STEAM disciplines. Math skills are reinforced through STEAM lessons that require reasoning skills. One of the STEAM elements used to motivate students to learn is integrating a technology-based program called Osmo. This award-winning program provides fundamental reading and math strategies in a fun and playful way. Osmo also builds core skills in complex subjects like science, physics, coding and more. Students participate in educational games that use physical action to make learning authentic and relevant. Due to an increase in student enrollment, we need 4 more iPads and 5 Osmo programs – Elementary school Starter kit, Genius starter kit, Coding starter kit, Reading plan, and Math. Each of the programs address specific skills necessary for elementary students to improve in reading and math. In addition, the interactive activities enhance the student’s creativity and critical thinking skills.

Requested Amount: 5,000

Project Title: Advancing Pre-8th Grade Student Outcome Through the Power of Home
Project Description:

HW! seeks to eradicate educational inequality for under-resourced school communities by activating parents to become co-educators supporting their children’s learning. Findings by the US Department of Education reveal COVID erased two decades’ of educational progress in reading and math. Unfortunately, students in St. Louis did not fare better than national trends. In 2023, leading education researchers analyzed data from 7,800 school districts to understand the scope of pandemic-related learning losses — St. Louis was among the top four hardest-hit communities in the nation, showing the highest rate of students below grade level in math and reading due to the pandemic. Among students from grades 3-8 in St. Louis, at most 65% in any grade scored above the level of Basic in English. In the face of these significant setbacks, education experts persistently call for extended instructional time, beyond the school day, to accelerate learning for the students.

Missouri students spend just 14% of the year in the school, the remaining 86% is managed by families – and yet, the home and outside of class time remains the greatest untapped resource by most school systems. Many school personnel, especially those in low income communities, lack family engagement competencies and related training and support. Moreover, teachers receive only limited education and professional development in this crucial area. In fact, less than ⅓ of states, including Missouri, require learning about family engagement strategies to become a teacher.

HW! aims to fill this systemic gap with programming strategically structured to support schools, teachers, and parents in improving literacy, math, and attendance for students. Through our program, parents are empowered with coaching and equipped with tools to bring the classroom home leading to increased instructional time for students. Families meaningfully engaged in their children’s learning and development positively impact lifelong health, academic, and well-being outcomes.

Project Title: Art with Heart
Project Description:

Art with Heart (AwH) is a national program that was created by an advisory team composed of mental and physical health providers, education professionals, bereavement specialists, developers of social emotional learning programs, and others. Specific curriculum was developed for three different age groups, and is assembled as an art journal for students along with a robust teacher guide for program facilitators.

AwH has been using the healing power of creative expression to support kids and youth for over 20 years. This therapeutic, art-based curriculum is a proven path to transforming pain into possibility. Workbooks and detailed curricula empower adults to effectively help kids to work through their feelings, build resilience, and see a future full of possibility via creative expression.

AwH is a 16-week trauma-informed program with 90-minute group sessions once per week. The lessons and activities focus on self-awareness, self-management, relationship awareness, and decision-making. There is a powerful relationship between a child’s emotional experiences and his/her physical and mental health as an adult. Studies show that early adverse experiences affect mental and physical health even up to a half-century later.

Evolving Wellness (EW) has brought together facilitators who have been trained by a licensed Art Therapist, who will oversee the program. This April facilitators will meet with students, starting with the 8-10 year old age group (grades 3-5), to facilitate "Draw it Out." This summer EW will offer the next level "Ink About It" geared for ages 11-12 (grades 6-8). EW is working with DHS-CLTS to identify youth who would most benefit from the program. EW also has "private pay" clients who would like to attend, but find the cost prohibitive. This grant request is to supplement the cost of the program through a scholarship program that would offer families a sliding payment scale based on household income.

Project Title: Closing the Nature Gap with HawkWatch International
Project Description:

Despite Utah being home to some of the world’s most beautiful and iconic landscapes, many don’t have the luxury of exploring them. HawkWatch International closes this “nature gap” with educational programs featuring live birds of prey for individuals experiencing economic, social, or physical barriers that prevent access to engaging experiences in nature. With support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Famly Foundation, we will be able to close the nature gap for more learners free of charge.

HawkWatch International (HWI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. We provide high-quality learning experiences to the public, with a focus on children of all ages. We do this through our team of trained educators and Raptor Ambassadors, live birds of prey that can no longer survive in the wild. Our program serves learners like Title I students, incarcerated youth, English language learners, refugees, families experiencing homelessness, and those with complex special education needs. For many, the highlight of our program is meeting a real raptor up close.

Our program is unique in that it is entirely outreach-based, allowing us to meet children where they are. This preserves vital resources for schools, families, and organizations by saving the cost of travel offsite. Often, these children do not have opportunities to spend time in nature or at educational facilities like museums or zoos. This is why we prioritize programs that serve these audiences and make connecting with nature easier by bringing these experiences to them.

A typical nature gap program includes a visit from 1-3 live raptor ambassadors and content aligned to state and national science standards. Our programs are informed by real-world data collected from HWI’s scientists, connecting children to STEM careers taking place in their area.
