Project Title: Let’s STEAM into Reading
Project Description:

Impact STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Academy (ISA), the community-based service of Impact Church (formerly known as Canaan Land Church International) was created to improve elementary students reading and math skills through STEAM projects. This enrichment program provided after school connects and extends the skills the students are learning in school to real life application. The goal is to encourage and inspire the students to explore the careers of tomorrow through leadership development and academic excellence. ISA serves students in the South Gwinnett area where 75% of the student population qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. According to standardized test scores, 37% – 42% of the students scored below grade level in reading and math. Let’s STEAM into Reading is designed to integrate reading with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math using hands-on activities. This literacy-based program combines foundational reading skills along with accelerated learning strategies for academic success. Students read, write, and build vocabulary, while solving problems in each of the STEAM disciplines. Math skills are reinforced through STEAM lessons that require reasoning skills. One of the STEAM elements used to motivate students to learn is integrating a technology-based program called Osmo. This award-winning program provides fundamental reading and math strategies in a fun and playful way. Osmo also builds core skills in complex subjects like science, physics, coding and more. Students participate in educational games that use physical action to make learning authentic and relevant. Due to an increase in student enrollment, we need 4 more iPads and 5 Osmo programs – Elementary school Starter kit, Genius starter kit, Coding starter kit, Reading plan, and Math. Each of the programs address specific skills necessary for elementary students to improve in reading and math. In addition, the interactive activities enhance the student’s creativity and critical thinking skills.
