Project Title: The Bakari Transformative Wholeness Institute
Project Description:

The Bakari Transformative Wholeness Institute programs empower youth aged 14 through 18 with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on training needed to break down barriers that have stagnated underserved communities to begin rebuilding emotional health and to develop a firm foundation for wealth building. We contribute to the broader goal of community well-being by providing methods to remove the stigma and constraints of living in poverty by decreasing the economic gap for impoverished and victimized communities that are often overlooked and are dealing with compound trauma.

We offer three programs that target overcoming a poverty mentality, replacing it with a promising emotional and financial outlook: Financial Literacy, Foundations in Entrepreneurship, and Career Leadership Internship for High School Students.

The Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship programs are delivered in Austin Independent School District (AISD) high schools by AISD certified teachers. After two years, over 2000 students have been given the opportunity to participate. In addition to providing the industry leading Ramsey Solutions curriculum while each student uses his or her personally assigned computer to access lessons, workshops, and direction on a special project, TBF hand-selected, culturally sensitive speakers engage with the students. Financial Literacy sessions include real-life scenarios focused on building credit, the Federal Reserve System, foreign currency systems, stocks and bonds, cryptocurrency, and real estate, to name a few. Foundations in Entrepreneurship encourages underrepresented youth to have their own businesses to manage their financial destiny and ensure they have economic leverage globally.

The Career Leadership Internship Program, now in its third year, pays interns competitively, more than minimum wage, and offers real world opportunities in product development, marketing, current technologies, and non-profit leadership.
As recipients of the grant, our goal is to continue these programs for 2025 and expand the reach to an additional 1,000 youth.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 31, 2024
Requested Amount: 8,000.00

Project Title: Summer Programming
Project Description:

Reality Changers’ youth programs build first-generation college students by offering tutoring and mentoring resources to support academic achievement, community leadership, and personal growth. Students in the program often begin with GPAs below 2.0, are gang-adjacent, and are disconnected from their community – overall, needing a complex support system to become successful. Students come from neighborhoods characterized with low educational attainment, high crime and twice the amount of high school dropouts. Despite the obstacles the students face, they exit our programs with a 100% high school graduation rate, enroll in college with approximately a 97% rate, and 75% graduate from college in six years or less. Lastly, our students are 7x more likely to graduate than their similar peers.

The project we propose carries our school year programming into the summer, ensuing thatat least 200 students have access to meaningful and growth-oriented activities with caring adult mentors. Our summer programming includes partnering with UC San Diego Extended Studies to offer active STEM learning or pique their entrepreneurial spirit in hands-on activities led by local entrepreneurs, all while being with their peers. Internal summer program events are intentionally held outside of students’ normal neighborhood, often outdoors, and promote critical thinking skills and teamwork outside the classroom. These activities intentionally build students’ leadership skills, confidence, and resiliency to unfamiliar situations. Summer programming is a necessary bridge between school-year programming. Overall, Reality Changers’ success is based on reliable and caring mentors providing consistent and engaging programming, including when school is not in session. Funding from this grant would directly support implementing program activities, excursions, transportation, and supplies.

Project Title: Teaching Young At Risk females Through the Arts
Project Description:

Our plan is to provide young females who are at-risk and have low socio-economic ages 12-21 weekly workshops in the Arts in order to help empower them and provide them with a positive outlet. We will offer the young ladies piano and voice lessons, drawing and painting, photography, and studio time for them to make a song. This is important to us because we recognize the tremendous positive impact the Arts have on people’s lives. This program is important to our community because we offer a safe space for young females to get off the streets and do something that can have a positive impact on them as well as empower them all the while providing positive, supportive role models.
We will implement our program by having 1 piano and voice teacher, 2 volunteers who will help assist with the workshops as well as run the drawing, painting, and photography workshops, and one Producer who will help the kids produce a song. We will provide the piano, voice, drawing, painting, and photography lessons at our office as well as taking field trips to parks and places where the kids can experience nature to draw and paint and work on writing their song.
The scheduling will be as follows: Students pick what area of the arts they are interested in. Piano and voice lessons will be individual lessons held once per week for 30 minutes. Group voice lessons will also occur (small choir formed), group art lessons, group photography and those who are interested in beginning studio time will be selected as well. Classes will be help 3 times a week and Saturdays with more classroom hours becoming available during the summer since students will be out of school. Our office has one large space, one conference room and three individual offices so we have enough space to accommodate all.
