Project Title: Inspire Foundation Youth peer support
Project Description:

Executive Summary
The International Center for Wellness, through its nonprofit subsidiary Inspire of the Carolinas, is proud to announce the development of a pioneering youth peer support program. This initiative is a direct response to the escalating demand for accessible mental health resources, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic which has severely impacted teen girls’ mental well-being. Our commitment to providing quality mental health services is unwavering, and in an effort to extend our reach and impact, we are introducing the 1st Inaugural Mental Health Awareness Sneaker Ball as a key initiative within our grant proposal.

Background
The pandemic has had a profound effect on the mental health of individuals across the globe, with teen girls in the United States experiencing significant distress. Data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) highlights that nearly 60% of teen girls reported feelings of persistent sadness and hopelessness. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for increased mental health support and resources.

Objective
Our goal is to address this crisis by removing barriers to access and providing comprehensive support to those in need. The Mental Health Awareness Sneaker Ball is not just an event; it’s a movement towards creating a community that actively supports mental wellness and eradicates the stigma associated with seeking help.

Initiative Overview
The Mental Health Awareness Sneaker Ball aims to:

Raise Awareness: Highlight the mental health challenges faced by teen girls post-pandemic and the community’s role in providing support.
Promote Inclusivity: Ensure every participant can attend free of charge, making mental health support accessible to all.
Support Innovation: Introduce new and innovative programs designed to support and empower girls in our community.
Community Need
With only 4% of therapists being African American and ongoing health disparities, there’s a significant barrier to treatment for many. Our organization has a waitlist, indicating the growing need for services. We are determined to fill this gap by offering innovative programs that meet the community’s needs.

Call to Action
Your support and donation to the Mental Health Awareness Sneaker Ball will directly contribute to the success of this initiative, allowing us to provide these essential services free of charge. Together, we can build a mentally healthy environment for our women and young girls.

Project Title: Engaging Youth in Healthy Living through Gardening
Project Description:

Honey in the Rock (HR) is a charitable social enterprise of the small, sustainable organization called Diakonia Farm. Founded on a relational, asset-based community development approach, HR is committed to reducing food insecurity and poverty while teaching sustainable farming practices to low-income neighbors. Booneville boasts plentiful land and a hard-working, entrepreneurial spirit of its residents. Building on this, HR believes in empowering individuals with the knowledge to better themselves and the environment through self-sustaining gardening practices and healthy food consumption.

A 2019 study from the USDA’s economic research service found that Mississippi had the highest rate of food insecurity in the country with 15.7% of the population facing this obstacle. Food insecurity, defined by the USDA as a “household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” is couched within a food environment in Mississippi characterized by few healthy food options, high persistent poverty, and a primarily rural landscape. Further, among Mississippi adults, food insecurity is associated with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, low fruit and vegetable consumption, physical inactivity, and smoking.

HR is one of only a few nonprofits in the region and the only nonprofit that provides a holistic, upstream approach to combating healthy food insecurity, poverty, and sustainable gardening practices. By utilizing an upstream approach, HR is working to combat systemic issues through gardening and healthy living with children. HR accomplishes its mission through three primary pillars of programming: Life Skill Classes, Community Gardening, and Food Distribution. This funding would specifically help build a new community garden at a local elementary school. HR is utilizing best practices in farming and community development to ensure Booneville children are given the best opportunity to climb out of poverty and lead healthier lives, all while leaving the land better than they found it.

iMP’s Flint Youth Film Festival (FYFF) is a dynamic platform for filmmakers ages 13-25. It’s goal: to educate, celebrate, and support young filmmakers. Participants receive feedback from national experts and develop their storytelling skills. It is a four-day event hosted is a historic Flint theater and draws 600 entries a year.

The Film Appreciation Academy (FAA) online and its annual live day-long conference open doors to the filmmaking world, offering immersive experiences, workshops, conferences, and internships. Led by industry experts and renowned filmmakers, FAA delves into every facet of filmmaking. Film festival winners participate in panel discussions sharing their experiences with FAA participants. Project Title: Program Support
Project Description:

The mission at Y.O.U.TH (Youth Organized and Unity to Help) is to motivate, inspire and empower youth, family and educators to dismantle the school to prison pipeline and by challenging existing systems and structures. We do this work through our #BooksNotBars Oregon programming which includes Literacy, Mentoring, Advocacy and DEI Training.

Our core programs are designed to address the failings in the current system by providing critical literacy education to those within the Black and Brown community in addition to providing DEI training to those in the greater community to help create allies and understanding. By helping people in the community better understand the issues with the current system, we can better prepare our youth to advocate for themselves and map a different future.

Our literacy work includes tutoring, our Books for You programming which provides culturally responsive books for all program participants and our Page Turner program where we inspire a passion for reading by partnering with adults through the Portland Metro area to record themselves reading kids their favorite books. We offer free tutoring by professional tutors for K-5th grade students focused on meeting or exceeding grade level in reading literacy including providing supplemental tools and support for guardians. Our goal is to inspire children to love learning and reading.

We also offer mentoring focused on self-development and personal development including life skills, goal setting for short and long term and SMART goals. Our mentoring is both group and 1:1 depending on the needs of the youth. Our advocacy work includes educating families and the larger community about the school to prison pipeline and what each person can do to help disrupt. We host workshops and events for all ages including financial literacy, entrepreneurship, investing, business 101, cooking classes, discussions on how to win at being a student athlete, the value of journaling and music-beat making. Our events and workshops are inherently culturally responsive, because they are all lead by Black people for BIPOC people. All information is delivered through the lens of a person of color in order to embrace, preserve and celebrate the power of our cultural uniqueness, creativity and strength.

Y.O.U.TH has had the opportunity to grow and adapt tremendously over the past two years. Last summer we implemented 2 new programs to support our community’s needs. Y.O.U.TH Elements (formerly Saved By the Ink), is a screen-printing apprentice program. This program helps youth ages 16-20 learn how to transform everyday ideas and material into art to inspires their natural gifts, talents and creativity in a therapeutic and transformative way. Our partnership with Community Music Center through Portland Parks and Recreation brings free music classes to our youth in the community and extends access to jobs within the City of Portland.
