Project Title: Defy Ventures Illinois
Project Description:

Defy Ventures is a nonprofit organization with a mission to shift mindsets to give people with criminal histories their best shot at a second chance through career readiness, personal development, and entrepreneurship training programs offered in prison and in the community. Defy works to intentionally intervene in established systems and ways of being that reinforce systemic racism, oppression, and economic disparity. With a vision to cut recidivism rates in half, Defy uses an "inside-out" model to combat factors contributing to cycles of recidivism and poverty, increasing economic opportunity and strengthening communities.

Defy’s core in-prison program, called CEO of Your New Life (CEO YNL), is a robust 7- to 9-month program focused on reentry preparation, personal development, career readiness, and entrepreneurship. Because Defy rejects dehumanizing language for people who are impacted by the criminal legal system, we refer to program participants as Entrepreneurs in Training, or EITs.

Upon their release from prison, Defy provides CEO YNL program graduates with post-release reentry support including case management, a Chromebook to access vital services, ongoing career readiness training, professional networking workshops, peer support, and mentorship. After Defy EITs attain general stability in reentry, they also have the opportunity to further their entrepreneurial endeavors through Defy’s post-release Entrepreneurship Pathway. The programs within the Entrepreneurship Pathway include additional business coaching, intensive entrepreneurship training curriculum, and business acceleration to support the development and launch of small businesses. Defy also provides access to capital, which is a key barrier for entrepreneurs with a criminal history.

Project Title: Youth Sports Registration Awards
Project Description:

Our mission is to provide financial assistance and support to families for community sports activities. We aim to reach low-income families who need assistance with sports activity fees, uniforms, etc. for their children to participate. This project aims to cover registration for 25 children to participate in a selected sports activity at a recreational or private facility. Our organization would like to assist with uniforms and sports equipment to ensure the participants are equipped with the tools necessary for success. Our organization also believes that children need the proper nutrition and hydration to keep them fueled and able to physically function while playing sports. We plan to provide healthy and nutritious snacks, foods, and beverages to ensure we are doing our part to encourage healthy eating habits. We would like to provide an experience that is memorable while providing access to positive activities that are beneficial for adolescent growth and development. The organization would like to host a sports banquet at the end of the year to acknowledge all the sports participants. This serves as positive reinforcement to let the youth participants know and acknowledge the great things, they are doing for themselves. I strongly believe this will serve as a catalyst for them to want to keep going and set goals to produce successful outcomes.

Project Title: Annual County Wide Senior Citizen Christmas Program
Project Description:

Our Annual County Wide Senior Citizen Christmas Celebration is held every year annually and we have seniors and youth from all over the county and Sumter County With the holidays, it is important to share moments of solidarity with family, not just exchange gifts or eat a traditional dinner. We associate Christmas with joy, good times with others and good company. Often, however, feelings and memories of people from the past make Christmas more sad than joyful. There is a huge difference in how older people spend their holidays, since the way they are, and unable to get out as much as usual also their financial situation, and any other problems may determine a lot of their mood. Our main Objective is to help the elderly to combat loneliness and feel happier, many elderly people will be helped to recover from the sadness and loneliness they experience by giving them time, attention, and empathy. That is why we started our county wide Senior Citizen Christmas Celebration to eliminate as much stress that comes with the season as possible we plan on buying gift to give away to every senior and child present, those that are homebound will be delivered, this is a time to uplift their spirits and with singing and praise dancing and two inspirational speakers to speak into their life during this season has always been a joy for us and finally we feed them a nutrious meal all free of charge. A day that is focused on them to uplift their spirit and it’s been a joy all these years.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court (FOPJC)
Project Description:

Founded in 1993, the Friends of Portsmouth Juvenile Court (FOPJC) initiative emerged from the vision of the Juvenile Court Services Unit’s director, recognizing the potential impact of volunteer involvement in supporting youth and families. FOPJC has adapted its programs and services to meet the evolving needs of Portsmouth’s youth and their families, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to enhancing their outcomes.

FOPJC’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) initiative plays a crucial role by providing courts with essential information to ensure decisions are made in the child’s best interest, often when the child is in foster care. FOPJC recruits, screens, trains, and supervises CASA volunteers to represent the interests of children who have suffered abuse or neglect.

Addressing the consequences of poor decision-making by youth, FOPJC’s Community Service Program intervenes when juvenile courts direct youths to perform community service. This program establishes partnerships with local municipal and non-profit organizations, allowing these young people to give back to their community as a form of restitution.

Recognizing the family-wide impact when a youth becomes entangled in the juvenile justice system, FOPJC offers Family Supports. This initiative provides various services, including travel stipends and emergency assistance, aiming to reduce stress on parents and promote a supportive home environment, benefiting the entire family.

ACT NOW Portsmouth represents FOPJC’s latest effort in violence prevention and intervention, focusing on young men aged 14-21 at high risk of involvement in gun or gang-related activities. Through dedicated outreach workers and case managers, the program offers intensive support to help these individuals improve their economic, social, and emotional well-being, guiding them towards self-sufficiency and a healthier life.

FOPJC’s evolution reflects its ongoing dedication to fostering positive changes in the lives of Portsmouth’s youth and their families, adapting to their changing needs with a range of supportive programs and services.

Project Title: Empowering Macon County’s Foster Care Community
Project Description:

Over 430,000 vulnerable children in the United States await permanency in housing, family, support, and care. In North Carolina, over 12,000 children are in foster care, with Macon County seeing continual growth, fluctuating between 75 and 90 children on average.

Simultaneously, there’s a persistent decrease in available foster homes, with a 23% decline in licensed homes statewide reported by The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. Challenges faced by prospective and current foster parents in obtaining and maintaining licenses contribute to this decline. The process involves extensive training, meeting specific home standards, and acquiring necessary resources. Ongoing compliance requirements add to the challenges, coupled with a lack of consistent support, information, and resources needed for child care.

Magnolia Mission, a nonprofit in Franklin, North Carolina, addresses these challenges by offering assistance to the entire foster care community. Through three program areas – Prospective Foster Family Support, New Placement Support, and Ongoing Support and Resources – we aim to fill resource and support gaps. Our overarching goal is to support the foster care community and increase awareness for more available foster homes.

To sustain and expand our efforts, we seek support from financial partners. Immediate needs include maintaining bi-monthly financial support for foster families, supporting care baskets for arrivals and departures, and providing birthday gifts for children in the system. Magnolia Mission seeks the chance to present a formal proposal to the Hermanowski Family Foundation, requesting grant funding to enhance our foster care support efforts.

Total Project Budget: $62,065.00

We acknowledge the importance of diversifying our support streams to ensure long-term sustainability and the expansion of our programs. As such, we have begun pursuing greater grant funding for mission-aligned foundations. At the present time, we have a pending grant request with the Provident Benevolent Foundation for $5,000.
