Project Title: Empowering Macon County’s Foster Care Community
Project Description:

Over 430,000 vulnerable children in the United States await permanency in housing, family, support, and care. In North Carolina, over 12,000 children are in foster care, with Macon County seeing continual growth, fluctuating between 75 and 90 children on average.

Simultaneously, there’s a persistent decrease in available foster homes, with a 23% decline in licensed homes statewide reported by The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. Challenges faced by prospective and current foster parents in obtaining and maintaining licenses contribute to this decline. The process involves extensive training, meeting specific home standards, and acquiring necessary resources. Ongoing compliance requirements add to the challenges, coupled with a lack of consistent support, information, and resources needed for child care.

Magnolia Mission, a nonprofit in Franklin, North Carolina, addresses these challenges by offering assistance to the entire foster care community. Through three program areas – Prospective Foster Family Support, New Placement Support, and Ongoing Support and Resources – we aim to fill resource and support gaps. Our overarching goal is to support the foster care community and increase awareness for more available foster homes.

To sustain and expand our efforts, we seek support from financial partners. Immediate needs include maintaining bi-monthly financial support for foster families, supporting care baskets for arrivals and departures, and providing birthday gifts for children in the system. Magnolia Mission seeks the chance to present a formal proposal to the Hermanowski Family Foundation, requesting grant funding to enhance our foster care support efforts.

Total Project Budget: $62,065.00

We acknowledge the importance of diversifying our support streams to ensure long-term sustainability and the expansion of our programs. As such, we have begun pursuing greater grant funding for mission-aligned foundations. At the present time, we have a pending grant request with the Provident Benevolent Foundation for $5,000. We also intend to research and apply to additional foundations throughout the year to support our programs.
