Project Title: Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court (FOPJC)
Project Description:
Founded in 1993, the Friends of Portsmouth Juvenile Court (FOPJC) initiative emerged from the vision of the Juvenile Court Services Unit’s director, recognizing the potential impact of volunteer involvement in supporting youth and families. FOPJC has adapted its programs and services to meet the evolving needs of Portsmouth’s youth and their families, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to enhancing their outcomes.
FOPJC’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) initiative plays a crucial role by providing courts with essential information to ensure decisions are made in the child’s best interest, often when the child is in foster care. FOPJC recruits, screens, trains, and supervises CASA volunteers to represent the interests of children who have suffered abuse or neglect.
Addressing the consequences of poor decision-making by youth, FOPJC’s Community Service Program intervenes when juvenile courts direct youths to perform community service. This program establishes partnerships with local municipal and non-profit organizations, allowing these young people to give back to their community as a form of restitution.
Recognizing the family-wide impact when a youth becomes entangled in the juvenile justice system, FOPJC offers Family Supports. This initiative provides various services, including travel stipends and emergency assistance, aiming to reduce stress on parents and promote a supportive home environment, benefiting the entire family.
ACT NOW Portsmouth represents FOPJC’s latest effort in violence prevention and intervention, focusing on young men aged 14-21 at high risk of involvement in gun or gang-related activities. Through dedicated outreach workers and case managers, the program offers intensive support to help these individuals improve their economic, social, and emotional well-being, guiding them towards self-sufficiency and a healthier life.
FOPJC’s evolution reflects its ongoing dedication to fostering positive changes in the lives of Portsmouth’s youth and their families, adapting to their changing needs with a range of supportive programs and services.
