Project Title: Agapeville Capital Campaign Final Phase
Project Description:

Incorporated in 2013, Agape House of Prescott (Agape House) exists to provide long-term, transitional housing for families who are without a residence. Beginning in 2015, the organization began housing families, together, while facilitating additional support services to equip families for an independent and self-sustained future. Today, Agape House remains the only family-inclusive transitional housing program in Prescott, providing a safe place for parents and their children to call home and a continuum of services to help families get back on their feet.

Agape House of Prescott is requesting $10,000 in support from The Hermanowski Foundation to complete the final purchase of "Agapeville," our nine- unit apartment building that houses families seeking long-term transitional housing. Required renovations to the apartment building have already been funded through different income streams. The timely completion of this project, including renovations, will increase the quantity, quality, and sustainability of services provided to homeless families in crisis for many years to come.
AHOP is currently in the final phase of the $1,000,000 capital campaign to double its capacity since 2018 to serve homeless families in the Prescott area. With 65 percent of the funds already secured, we are seeking to offset the remaining $350,000 needed to complete the purchase and renovations to the nine-unit apartment complex that will serve as an additional housing and program site for up to 16 families in crisis annually. Anticipated completion date is March 31, 2024. These funds will be used to complete the purchase of the nine-unit complex, which is ideally located just three blocks west of downtown Prescott. The original purchase price was $850,000 with an additional $150,000 worth of estimated renovations required.

Project Title: Fostering Heroes Foundation Cowboy Camp
Project Description:

Since 2014, Cowboy Camp has taken place over seven weeks at the Flying E Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona. From June to July we serve approximately 400+ foster youth between the ages of 13 and 18. Our program provides an unforgettable experience to immerse in the lifestyle at an authentic dude ranch, empowering personal growth and a sense of belonging.

Our overnight Cowboy Camp offers an escape from the everyday routines of group home life and allows the children to engage in a variety of memorable activities such as horseback riding, pool / cowboy games, exploring the desert in utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) and bonding with volunteers around the campfire. We provide healthy meals, sleeping bags and lodging for all the participants at camp. These experiences transform and provide these youth with memories that will positively impact their lives for years to come.

Prior to leaving camp, youth will have the opportunity to pick out new clothes, undergarments and hygiene products from our complimentary “shop.”

Cowboy Camp is made possible through the support of 25+ volunteers, Fostering Heroes and ranch staff. Volunteers help ensure the safety, well-being and active engagement of all participants. The staff members and volunteers have strong leadership skills, extensive knowledge about ranching and a commitment to positively impact the futures of the campers.

Funding will be utilized for food, lodging, sleeping bags, clothing and salaries for the ranch and Fostering Heroes Foundation staff. The program may also allocate funds for materials / equipment necessary for camp and may be used to promote camp to reach more group homes and expand the camp’s reach.

Cowboy Camp embodies the Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to inspiring youth to reach their full potential and helps place foster youth on a path towards a brighter future filled with confidence and a sense of community.

Project Title: Wrapped in Love Diaper Bank
Project Description:

Wrapped in Love Diaper Bank is a grassroots approach to alleviating the cost of diapering while strengthening use of resource programs that serve the county’s struggling families. Community Counts, established in 1997, is Wil’s non-profit fiscal agent, providing oversight management and non-financial support for raising project funding.

Diaper needs are a hidden consequence of poverty and lack of resources. Assistance in meeting diaper needs is an unmet service in Yavapai County. Diaper banks are structured to raise funds and inventory for diapering babies or adults suffering from incontinence. WiL staff and volunteers are coordinating with family serving programs, community agencies, shelters, and schools to ensure under resourced populations are accessing all resources available to assist them in raising healthy children. In addition, older individuals have access to life improving incontinence supplies.

This diaper bank collaboration with existing service organizations and passionate community members will help meet the needs of struggling families. Work is being accomplished through the following strategies: 1) Increasing community partner participation and distribution of diapering essentials to families in need; 2) Increasing organizational visibility in the community; and 3) Enhancing operational efficiency.

Diapers have the power to change lives. An adequate supply of diapers is a basic need that significantly impacts the health of the community and creates a new approach to prevention by keeping babies warm, dry, and healthy. An insufficient supply of diapers can cause a family to spiral deeper into poverty and distress. Most childcare centers, even free and subsidized facilities, require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers. WiL helps mitigate the costs, assist parents that cannot go to work or school if they cannot leave their babies at childcare, and reduce potential health risks for babies and individuals remaining too long in soiled diapers.

Project Title: Juma Seattle YouthConnect Program
Project Description:

A job is about more than a paycheck. Work brings dignity, and research has shown that the combination of a powerful early employment experience alongside education support and asset building opportunities, helps young people overcome the hardships of poverty, inequality and racism, and gives them the tools to build stronger, safer and more equitable communities.

But across Seattle, over 25,000 disadvantaged, at-risk young people want to work, but lack the education, skills and confidence they need to get and keep a job. They need a chance, and Juma Ventures Seattle’s (Juma Seattle) YouthConnect program gives them that chance.

YouthConnect is delivered through an EARN, LEARN and CONNECT model: EARN: Young people are employed at our social enterprises (concession stands at Climate Pledge Arena, Husky Stadium, Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park), where they receive on-the-job training in areas such as sales, business operations, customer service and conflict resolution. Juma Seattle integrates a youth development, trauma-informed care, strengths-based approach to help young people develop professional skills and navigate the transition to healthy adulthood. LEARN: Alongside the job, young people are supported by adult staff focused on helping them overcome personal barriers to successful permanent employment and master job skills in a growth mindset framework. Young people participate in a series of job search skills workshops such as resume writing and mock interviews, go on career and educational tours and participate in our financial capability program that helps teach them lifelong money management skills. CONNECT: To connect young people to sustained employment and education, we partner with vocational and educational institutions such as the Seattle Maritime Academy and Highline Community College, and with retail, hospitality, food service and health companies such as Costco and Starbucks to Once young people are hired, we provide 90 days of support to ensure retention success.

Project Title: Building Resiliency in Youth: Youth Mental Health/Substance Use Initiative
Project Description:

The focus of this grant proposal is youth mental health and suicide prevention. Youth in Arizona are impacted by suicide, be it in families, at school, or in their own lives. As a community, we should be concerned about helping youth who are struggling with depression, anxiety, or suicidal ideation. Unfortunately, there is limited funding in Maricopa County to address youth mental health issues and suicide prevention. Up until recently, the mention of suicide carried a stigma with it; we now know that suicide can be prevented by talking about it, by studying its causes, and through early identification and referral. While focusing on the issue of youth mental health and suicide, this project also will address youth substance use since the two issues are related and both are identified as priority areas in Arizona.

Building Resiliency in Youth: Youth Mental Health/Substance Use Initiative will provide mental health/substance use education to adolescents at schools and youth serving organizations, using the Signs of Suicide (SOS) curriculum which is an evidence-based program. Through one-hour classroom presentations, youth will be screened for depression /suicide risk, as well as substance use, using a brief screening tool. In addition, they will view a video that educates them about the warning signs of depression and suicide in others and the dangers of substance use. With regards to early problem identification and referral, for those students who are deemed “at-risk” for suicide or substance abuse, a parent/legal guardian will be contacted immediately, and a professional referral will be made. Parents/guardians and school staff also will be trained to know the warning signs of suicide/substance abuse and how to intervene.

The main intent of this program is early identification and referral. By identifying youth at-risk and referring them to appropriate mental health services, we believe we can save lives.
