Project Title: Juma Seattle YouthConnect Program
Project Description:
A job is about more than a paycheck. Work brings dignity, and research has shown that the combination of a powerful early employment experience alongside education support and asset building opportunities, helps young people overcome the hardships of poverty, inequality and racism, and gives them the tools to build stronger, safer and more equitable communities.
But across Seattle, over 25,000 disadvantaged, at-risk young people want to work, but lack the education, skills and confidence they need to get and keep a job. They need a chance, and Juma Ventures Seattleās (Juma Seattle) YouthConnect program gives them that chance.
YouthConnect is delivered through an EARN, LEARN and CONNECT model: EARN: Young people are employed at our social enterprises (concession stands at Climate Pledge Arena, Husky Stadium, Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park), where they receive on-the-job training in areas such as sales, business operations, customer service and conflict resolution. Juma Seattle integrates a youth development, trauma-informed care, strengths-based approach to help young people develop professional skills and navigate the transition to healthy adulthood. LEARN: Alongside the job, young people are supported by adult staff focused on helping them overcome personal barriers to successful permanent employment and master job skills in a growth mindset framework. Young people participate in a series of job search skills workshops such as resume writing and mock interviews, go on career and educational tours and participate in our financial capability program that helps teach them lifelong money management skills. CONNECT: To connect young people to sustained employment and education, we partner with vocational and educational institutions such as the Seattle Maritime Academy and Highline Community College, and with retail, hospitality, food service and health companies such as Costco and Starbucks to Once young people are hired, we provide 90 days of support to ensure retention success.
