Project Title: Spring 2024 After School Art Clubs
Project Description:

WAHI Studio, Inc., (WAHI) is an inclusive, grassroots, trauma informed, community art studio dedicated to the proliferation of arts education, arts experiences, wellness, and community engagement. Our approach to creating art is therapeutic. Artist-teachers focus on self-expression, mental health, building community, and progress.
Despite decades of research indicating arts participation, education, and experiences promote community engagement, improve mental health, and improve academic performance and social behaviors, a longstanding trend of reducing or eliminating arts from public education begun in the 1970’s continues unabated. (Wali et al. 2002; Catterall et. al 2012). WAHI Studio After School Art Clubs program (ASAC) is the only program of its kind in Niagara County. The program includes 14 Weeks of art instruction per semester. ASAC currently partners with the Newfane, Barker, Lockport, Wilson, and Royalton-Hartland Central school districts. Thanks to our recent move to a new, larger facility, the program will expand to include additional Niagara County Schools, as well as expanding our reach beyond Niagara County to include schools from northern Erie County. In the fall of 2023/spring 2024 we will add Starpoint, Lewiston-Porter, Niagara Wheatfield, and North Tonawanda Central schools. Homeschooling students and students from private schools within these districts such as DeSales Catholic School in Lockport will also participate.
Students learn about and imitate specific art movements/artists such as Fauvism/Matisse. They experiment with a variety of methods of painting including methods that are both creative and stress releasing, such as drip and throw painting, and learn the properties and use of acrylics. Students experiment with ink types and applications, sculpting with sculpture-wire and plaster, and chalking including the grisaille method of painting commonly used at festivals. The program focus is always on self-expression, progress, and emotional health.
Classes accommodate 24 students per session with 3 sessions per week.

Requested Amount: 10000

Project Title: Supporting enriching educational opportunities for low-income children
Project Description:

Torah Academy of Boston provides children from preschool to grade eight with a culturally affirming and academically rigorous education centered around their heritage, traditions, and identities. Since opening in 1982, we are the only school in the Boston area able to meet our students’ cultural, spiritual and academic needs. Our school is a vibrant and enriching place of learning for children in our community, where innate excitement for both secular and cultural studies is nurtured by a dedicated staff team, in a supportive environment. We serve a diverse student body of 277 students, most of whom come from low-income households.

We firmly believe that when every child attends a school where their cultural identities and beliefs are affirmed, and where they are nurtured by supportive instructors with similar lived-experiences and values, their educational experience can be transformational and truly enables them to achieve their full potential. Unfortunately, not every parent can afford such an education for their children, especially as rising inflation contributes to increased financial barriers for many families. Currently, over half of our students come from low-income households (according to Title-1 Guidelines), and over 75% of our families rely on our financial aid program to afford their tuition fees.

A gift of $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would enable us to provide a one-year scholarship to one low-income student who otherwise would not be able to attend our school. The Foundation’s support would give a low-income child the opportunity to be part of a vibrant school community where their identity and culture are affirmed and uplifted, where they are surrounded by role models and mentors that share similar lived experiences, and where they can build a strong foundation for academic success that will prepare them for high school, and beyond.

Total Project Budget: 10000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We continue to contribute fundraised dollars toward scholarship needs for our students; raising over $1.2 million per year to cover both full and partial scholarships for approximately 141 low income children, and another 38 children facing financial challenges.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 30, 2023
Requested Amount: 8500

Project Title: Making a culturally affirming education accessible for a low-income student
Project Description:

Mesorah High School provides 9th-12th grade girls in Dallas with a spiritually nurturing and academically rigorous high school education centered around Jewish traditions, history, and identity; we are the only school able to meet the cultural, spiritual and academic needs of young women from Dallas’ Orthodox Jewish community. Our enriching programs nurture the unique academic and personal strengths of our students through small class-sizes and a robust academic curriculum offering dual-credit and college-prep courses, while also placing a strong emphasis on cultural and spiritual growth, and civic engagement.

By providing a supportive learning environment that acknowledges and values our students’ unique cultural experiences, and prioritizing cultural affirmation to create a safe space for students to fully express themselves and their cultural identities, schools like ours can effectively enhance students’ self-esteem, sense of belonging, and overall engagement in learning for cultural minority students, like the students we serve. Our school’s ability to offer our students individualized attention and resources not often found in public schools can ultimately lead to greater opportunities for academic and professional success.

Unfortunately, not every parent can afford such an education for their children. Currently, over 75% of our families depend heavily on our financial aid program to afford their tuition fees. Regrettably, our limited budget doesn’t allow us to offer this kind of support to all families, leaving some students without access to an educational experience with the potential to dramatically improve their outcomes.

A gift of $8,500 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation would make it possible for a low-income young woman to attend our school next year, enabling her to access a high school education that will equip her with the skills and experiences she needs to reach her full potential, and empower her to develop into a confident and successful woman.

Total Project Budget: 8500

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The majority of our fundraising dollars cover scholarships for several young women each year. We anticipate raising roughly $385,000 by the end of this coming year to make a culturally affirming and enriching education possible for 45 young women facing financial barriers for the coming school year (75% of our students). We have no established scholarship or endowment fund.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Youth Art Therapy Program
Project Description:

Project Extreme is a small 501c3 organization transforming the lives of youth in crisis from 13 years of age up to the age of 21. We offer a number of impactful therapeutic programs including summer camps, weekend retreats, crisis interventions, residential programs, and year round mentorship to help at-risk youth overcome depression, addiction, and damaging relationships. To date, Project Extreme has assisted over 4,000 teens and this number continues to grow.

Our programs are designed and delivered by experts and are continuously evaluated to ensure maximum therapeutic outcomes and enjoyable experiences. In 2022, a teenage girl requested an art therapy program as part of our list of mental health therapy programs. She had found a dramatic change in her mental health status after being exposed to this non-traditional form of therapy. We took her request seriously and secured partial funding from the Bader Charitable Foundation to initiate an Art Therapy program to deliver as part of our weekend and holiday programs. So far, we sent one employee for training and have begun to purchase art supplies.

To expand this program to meet the needs of our youth, Project Extreme is seeking support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, an organization that shares its belief that all children and youth deserve a life filled with love, ongoing support, and professional help. Funding in the amount of $10,000 will allow us to train three more staff members and purchase art supplies for up to 30 youth in crisis. With much needed financial support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we will be able to improve our ongoing programming and expand our reach and make life-long impacts for more youth across our nation.

Total Project Budget: $15,328.50 for the Art Therapy program, which included sending four staff members for training and art supplies.

This introductory 12-week program increases girls’ awareness of mental health, focusing on social, emotional, and psychological well being. The first 12 weeks of the program will be delivered in person in a group setting. During this time, girls will have an opportunity to take part in various workshops and activities. To further their understanding of mental health and wellness, the group will explore the history of common mental health disorders, stigmas, and contributing factors, followed by various coping and self-care techniques and resources.

The following 5 weeks, girls will have access to a therapist who will provide one-on-one sessions to identify and assess concerns surrounding mental and emotional wellbeing, personalized to their individual needs. Participants will meet with the therapist once a week. Girls will have the option to opt-out of counselling, and choose a group or one-on-one mental health check-ins with the program mentor. Project Title: 5-K STEM Accelerator: Mindset, Skills & Access Classes, Fall Quarter
Project Description:

Home to Silicon Valley, San Mateo County is a textbook case of inequality and a resulting digital divide. Communities—especially those of color—are bracketed by wealth and poverty. The uneven distribution of community resources yields inequality and segregation, with many low-income youths falling through the cracks. Our partnership with The Primary School in East Palo Alto, is an attempting to bridge the gap between BIPOC youth and high-quality, culturally relevant STEM learning experiences. Our pilot program launched last fall, and is serving over 700 students this school year. The program budget covers the costs of classroom setup, student technology support, program supplies, and instructor salaries.

Each class takes a three-pronged approach: Shaping mindsets, building skills, and increasing access. Mindset work exposes students to teachers and mentors who represent them—providing a relatable model for success. Mindset shifts change the way that learners perceive and relate to technology, opening up career paths previously unimaginable. Building skills teaches students to use STEM concepts and tools—the first step toward technical literacy and advancement. Last, we increase access to innovation and networks of innovators, facilitating relationships that increase students’ odds of pursuing higher education in STEM fields.

During the school year, StreetCode teaches 45 minute STEM classes to K–5 grade students twice per week per class. Our instructors provide students with hands-on makerspace and computational thinking programs following the class schedule. We provide all of the materials and equipment needed to conduct courses and complete projects.

StreetCode instructors are the cornerstone of our organization, and the funding we are requesting will help pay the salaries of the four full-time StreetCode staff members who will be teaching this program over the coming year. While we are fortunate to be partially funded for this project, we still have a funding gap that we are trying to shore up.

Today’s Date: 3/29/23
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: DreamTracks: Transforming the Lives of Teen Parents and their Children
Project Description:

Way to Grow is seeking funding for our DreamTracks program, which transforms the futures of pregnant teens and their children.

In 2020, the tragedy of George Floyd brought the racial disparities in Minneapolis–some of the worst in the entire country–to the nation’s attention. These disparities include enormous inequities in wealth, education, and rates of home ownership. Since 1989, Way to Grow has addressed these inequities by bringing evidence-based, culturally responsive programming designed to ensure children succeed at school to the most vulnerable families in Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs. 95% of our clients are people of color.

One of the most impactful ways of addressing racial disparities and helping all children thrive is by supporting teenage mothers to stabilize their lives and complete their education. In Minnesota, teen pregnancy rates are significantly disparate between white teens and teens of color, with Hispanic and African American teens 4.8 and 3.5 times respectively more likely than white teens to give birth. These teenage mothers are significantly less likely to receive a high school diploma, far more likely to live in poverty, and their children are at much greater risk of poor academic, health, and behavioral outcomes.

The cornerstone of our DreamTracks program is our home visitors, called Family Educators, who reflect the language and culture of the teen and their family. Family Educators help teens ignite their untapped potential and belief in themselves through wraparound supports that include providing access to resources tailored to their individual needs; giving information about reproductive health; assisting with career development, transition-to-college support, and personal finance management; and helping with basic needs. Family Educators also prepare teens’ children for academic success through an evidence-based curriculum from birth to third grade that emphasizes parents as primary teachers of their children.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Lights, Camera, Music Class!!
Project Description:

Cherry Children’s Music Outreach (CCMO) was established in 2005 to address inequity in music education for young children living in disadvantaged communities throughout Maryland and Washington DC. Our dynamic curriculum gets young children engaged with music, building their confidence and the skills necessary for learning and growing. Cherry Children’s Music Outreach respectfully requests the support of the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation for the development and launch of a new music education video series for our partner centers serving low-income children.

Our team is continually thinking of new strategies to enrich our classroom experiences and make our programs even more accessible and impactful for the young children that we serve. With our current structure and capacities, CCMO can only visit partner centers once per month to hold in-person classes. The Foundation’s investment will provide critical support for CCMO to curate a new researched-based music education video series, enabling over 1,500 children to have music education accessible to them all year long, even when CCMO is not conducting in-person classes. The video series will kick off in the fall and will feature themed music education content developed by experienced educators that engages the children through lessons organized around seasonal topics. This exciting new series will be made available in all 19 of our partner centers across five counties in Maryland and Washington DC and will run through the summer of 2024. The videos will serve as a supplemental tool for partner center teachers. CCMO will also share the videos with the children and their families for viewing outside of class time. As an additional component of the series, CCMO will create and publish two publicly available music education videos. These will be posted to CCMO’s Youtube channel and will be accessible to hundreds of families nationwide.

Requested Amount: $7,850

Project Title: WYSO Music Makers
Project Description:

The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras was established in 1966 with a mission to enrich lives by providing transformational musical experiences and opportunities. In 2016, WYSO established the Music Makers program as a way for students to engage with music in a non-competitive environment, regardless of ability to pay. WYSO respectfully requests $7,850, 50% of the necessary costs to move 20 students off the waiting list and into a program that changes lives.

Music Makers currently serves 115 students, with 23 on a waiting list until additional funding is available. Students come from underserved families in Dane County, WI who struggle to make ends meet and cannot afford to spend money on instruments or music classes. 70% of Music Makers families qualify for free-and-reduced lunch.

In the Music Makers program, students receive private lessons and group instruction, learn to play a musical instrument and within an ensemble. Each Music Makers student receives a quality instrument, learns to mentor others, and can participate in activities such as Music Makers Student Council. Students participate in two concerts and recitals each year. Through this experience, students learn to lead, follow, communicate, and be responsible and resilient. With these tools and experiences, students are set up to succeed as musicians, and in life.

The Music Makers program believes that every child should have access to music education. Learning to play an instrument accelerates brain development and research has shown that just two years of studying music can rewire neural pathways for communication and mathematics into super-highways, leading to outcomes like better grades and increased graduation rates. Beyond these academic metrics, many Music Makers students recognize music as a creative and socio-emotional outlet in their lives. Music Makers cultivates a supportive environment in which students can explore their artistic voices and connect with peers through music.

Today’s Date: 29 March 2023
Requested Amount: $8,000

Project Title: Provide advocates and mentors for children and youth in foster care
Project Description:

All children served by Piedmont CASA have been placed in foster care due to underlying allegations of abuse and neglect. To ensure that each child has someone who will strenuously advocate on their behalf, Judges request a CASA Volunteer. They know how important it is for a child to have someone they can trust, someone who will stand by them for the entire time they are in the system, whether it is a matter of months or years.

CASA Volunteers are the only ones with access to everyone involved in a child’s case. They are uniquely able to conduct thorough investigations and present their research to the court in fact-based reports. Judges depend on these reports to make good decisions in the best interest of each child. In FY22, our court reports contained 427 recommendations. The court accepted 410, or 96%.

Through court reports and advocacy, CASA Volunteers restore safety, health, and stability to kids in foster care. The justice they provide ranges from obtaining proper medical care and educational support to reuniting them with their family when possible and, when it is not, helping them find safe, permanent homes.

Research shows that kids with CASA Volunteers are more hopeful. When kids have hope, outcomes improve. They have more academic success, enhanced well-being, increased self-control, positive social relationships, and optimism – tools they need to recover. It is not surprising that research also shows CASA kids spend less time in foster care, receive more medical support, experience fewer out-of-home placements, and have improved educational performance.

To meet the specific needs of older kids who are at risk of aging out unprepared, we developed Bridges to Success for Older Youth in Foster Care. Professional Bridges Coaches guide and mentor them in developing comprehensive plans for safely transitioning into self-sufficiency and independent living.
