Project Title: Supporting enriching educational opportunities for low-income children
Project Description:

Torah Academy of Boston provides children from preschool to grade eight with a culturally affirming and academically rigorous education centered around their heritage, traditions, and identities. Since opening in 1982, we are the only school in the Boston area able to meet our students’ cultural, spiritual and academic needs. Our school is a vibrant and enriching place of learning for children in our community, where innate excitement for both secular and cultural studies is nurtured by a dedicated staff team, in a supportive environment. We serve a diverse student body of 277 students, most of whom come from low-income households.

We firmly believe that when every child attends a school where their cultural identities and beliefs are affirmed, and where they are nurtured by supportive instructors with similar lived-experiences and values, their educational experience can be transformational and truly enables them to achieve their full potential. Unfortunately, not every parent can afford such an education for their children, especially as rising inflation contributes to increased financial barriers for many families. Currently, over half of our students come from low-income households (according to Title-1 Guidelines), and over 75% of our families rely on our financial aid program to afford their tuition fees.

A gift of $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would enable us to provide a one-year scholarship to one low-income student who otherwise would not be able to attend our school. The Foundation’s support would give a low-income child the opportunity to be part of a vibrant school community where their identity and culture are affirmed and uplifted, where they are surrounded by role models and mentors that share similar lived experiences, and where they can build a strong foundation for academic success that will prepare them for high school, and beyond.

Total Project Budget: 10000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We continue to contribute fundraised dollars toward scholarship needs for our students; raising over $1.2 million per year to cover both full and partial scholarships for approximately 141 low income children, and another 38 children facing financial challenges.

Project Duration: One year
Geographical Area Served: Boston, MA and surrounding areas
Age Group To Be Served: 6-14
