Project Title: Making a culturally affirming education accessible for a low-income student
Project Description:

Mesorah High School provides 9th-12th grade girls in Dallas with a spiritually nurturing and academically rigorous high school education centered around Jewish traditions, history, and identity; we are the only school able to meet the cultural, spiritual and academic needs of young women from Dallas’ Orthodox Jewish community. Our enriching programs nurture the unique academic and personal strengths of our students through small class-sizes and a robust academic curriculum offering dual-credit and college-prep courses, while also placing a strong emphasis on cultural and spiritual growth, and civic engagement.

By providing a supportive learning environment that acknowledges and values our students’ unique cultural experiences, and prioritizing cultural affirmation to create a safe space for students to fully express themselves and their cultural identities, schools like ours can effectively enhance students’ self-esteem, sense of belonging, and overall engagement in learning for cultural minority students, like the students we serve. Our school’s ability to offer our students individualized attention and resources not often found in public schools can ultimately lead to greater opportunities for academic and professional success.

Unfortunately, not every parent can afford such an education for their children. Currently, over 75% of our families depend heavily on our financial aid program to afford their tuition fees. Regrettably, our limited budget doesn’t allow us to offer this kind of support to all families, leaving some students without access to an educational experience with the potential to dramatically improve their outcomes.

A gift of $8,500 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation would make it possible for a low-income young woman to attend our school next year, enabling her to access a high school education that will equip her with the skills and experiences she needs to reach her full potential, and empower her to develop into a confident and successful woman.

Total Project Budget: 8500

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The majority of our fundraising dollars cover scholarships for several young women each year. We anticipate raising roughly $385,000 by the end of this coming year to make a culturally affirming and enriching education possible for 45 young women facing financial barriers for the coming school year (75% of our students). We have no established scholarship or endowment fund.

Project Duration: 1 Year
Geographical Area Served: Dallas, Texas
Age Group To Be Served: 14-18
