Project Title: 5-K STEM Accelerator: Mindset, Skills & Access Classes, Fall Quarter
Project Description:
Home to Silicon Valley, San Mateo County is a textbook case of inequality and a resulting digital divide. Communities—especially those of color—are bracketed by wealth and poverty. The uneven distribution of community resources yields inequality and segregation, with many low-income youths falling through the cracks. Our partnership with The Primary School in East Palo Alto, is an attempting to bridge the gap between BIPOC youth and high-quality, culturally relevant STEM learning experiences. Our pilot program launched last fall, and is serving over 700 students this school year. The program budget covers the costs of classroom setup, student technology support, program supplies, and instructor salaries.
Each class takes a three-pronged approach: Shaping mindsets, building skills, and increasing access. Mindset work exposes students to teachers and mentors who represent them—providing a relatable model for success. Mindset shifts change the way that learners perceive and relate to technology, opening up career paths previously unimaginable. Building skills teaches students to use STEM concepts and tools—the first step toward technical literacy and advancement. Last, we increase access to innovation and networks of innovators, facilitating relationships that increase students’ odds of pursuing higher education in STEM fields.
During the school year, StreetCode teaches 45 minute STEM classes to K–5 grade students twice per week per class. Our instructors provide students with hands-on makerspace and computational thinking programs following the class schedule. We provide all of the materials and equipment needed to conduct courses and complete projects.
StreetCode instructors are the cornerstone of our organization, and the funding we are requesting will help pay the salaries of the four full-time StreetCode staff members who will be teaching this program over the coming year. While we are fortunate to be partially funded for this project, we still have a funding gap that we are trying to shore up.
