Project Title: Safe Harbor Shelter and Transitional Living Program
Project Description:

The Northern Lighthouse, Inc. opened the doors of our new emergency shelter for homeless youth ages 10-17 on August 15, 2022. We provide access to food, clothing, basic needs, case management, counseling, and support with family reunification and education through this program. To meet the need of services for older homeless youth, we decided to create a Transitional Living Program for youth ages 16-21. Our Transitional Living Program opened on January 3, 2023. This program provides for the needs of youth, allows up to an 18 month stay, and focuses on education and employment to prepare youth for living independently and making successful transitions into adulthood. Since the beginning of these programs, we have served 4 youth in our emergency shelter and 5 youth in our Transitional Living Program. Throughout the next year, an estimate of 4-6 youth will stay at our shelter and 6-16 youth will participate in our Transitional Living Program. A grant award from the Hermanowski Foundation would help us meet the immediate needs of homeless youth ages 10-21. The Northern Lighthouse, Inc. receives federal and foundation funds to support our services for homeless youth, but this support only covers a portion of the costs of our services. The Northern Lighthouse, Inc. depends on grant awards from foundations and donations from individuals in our community to assist homeless youth and sustain our shelter and Transitional Living Program. We respectfully request a donation of $10,000 to help us continue to provide basic needs, services, and support to homeless youth in Maine.

Total Project Budget: $912,937

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Throughout 2022, we received a $200,000 non-competing continuation federal grant award to continue our emergency shelter and a $250,000 federal grant award to start a Transitional Living Program for homeless youth. We also received $2,500 from Northern Light Health, $5,000 from Versant Power Charitable Giving, $4,475 from the Maine Community Foundation, $2,000 from the Red Sox Foundation, $10,000 from Machias Savings Bank, $5,000 from the Bangor Savings Bank, $5,000 from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, a $500 gift card from Hannaford, $2,500 from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust, and $1,000 from the Simmons Foundation. This year, we are continuing to apply for all available state, federal, and foundation funding as well as increase our donor base.

Today’s Date: 03/17/2023
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: General Operation Expenses
Project Description:

General operations support allows Milwaukee Academy of Science (MAS) to continue the pursuit in closing the funding gap that exists. Per pupil funding from the Department of Public Instruction is significantly less for public charter schools. In fact, this school year (and since the MPS referendum was passed), independent charter schools receive $5,000 less per pupil than their MPS and suburban counterparts. For a school our size, this computes to more than $7 million dollars in revenue we do not have to invest in our classrooms. This deficit creates an issue with furthering the impact on MAS students in certain areas and programs. The gift received from the Hermanowski Foundation gathers district leaders to strategically think about how funding is allocated and disbursed while creatively thinking of innovative ways to continue the things that make MAS unique.

Requested Amount: 5,000

Project Title: Education Program
Project Description:

Youth spend more time online than ever before and more time consuming porn. According to SimilarWeb’s July 2022 traffic report, the three top-ranking porn sites generate more traffic annually than Amazon, Netflix, and TikTok combined. A nationally representative survey of U.S. teens shows that 84% of males and 57% of females ages 14-18 have viewed or consumed pornography (Solano, 2020). Most teens are exposed to porn by age 13, many of them as young as 8 or 9 years old (Wright, 2021). While decades of research confirm pornography’s negative effects, many remain unaware of its impacts on their brains, relationships, and communities.
Fight the New Drug’s (FTND) Education Program provides millions of individuals the opportunity to make an informed decision to live a porn-free life. The Education Program illustrates porn’s harms and its links to all forms of sexual exploitation through online educational resources, including our youthful documentary series, extensive educational video library, awareness-raising sharable content, and our robust Live Presentation Program. Our presentations include current research on porn’s harm reaching over one million youth, parents, community members, and leaders. To make educational presentations even more accessible to schools and organizations, we also created the Live Event Scholarship Fund. Our Education Program plays a critical role in filling the monumental gap in the general public’s understanding of the negative impacts pornography can have on individuals, relationships, and society. In fact, a national survey shows that those exposed to FTND’s content are twice as likely to understand the impacts of porn compared to the average person. Together with the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we can continue to develop invaluable resources and materials to change the lives of millions of youth everywhere.

Project Title: Junior Achievement: Financially Literacy for K-12 students
Project Description:

Through an investment of $5,000, Junior Achievement of South Central Kentucky will be able to provide its financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship education programs to students at schools with an LMI of above 50%. LMI, or low to moderate income, helps our organization hone in on the populations that are most in need of that extra push or encouragement.

Through our state and federal-approved curriculum, K-12 students can explore their financial future and future career. Students will be able to explore their skills, interests, values, and the world of work to make informed education, career, and life decisions. Through our programs, they should develop their knowledge of personal finance to apply strong financial-management skills regardless of income. The mentorship piece of our programming consists of training community volunteers to present our curriculum to students.

This gift, if awarded, would correlate to a total of 10 classrooms, around 250 students, and 10 community volunteers that we will impact. For reference, one classroom requires the funding of $500 to cover all materials, time, travel, and volunteer training. With your support, JA of SCKY will be able to fund middle school classrooms at schools with a LMI of over 50%.

Project Title: Music Education and Lesson Program – "Learn to Love Music" (LLM)
Project Description:

The Learn to Love Music Program {LLM} is a Music Education and Lessons program that offers music lessons and instruction as part of our Enrichment Series, offered at our Afterschool and Summer Camp programs, and at large within our Community Center. We work with instructors to teach World Drumming and other Instrument lessons to kids ages 7 through 18, as part of our Enrichment Series of offerings. As a new program, we will import instruments of all types and create a set-aside Music Room for this special opportunity.
The LLM program will be segmented into age appropriate classes and offer beginning to intermediate music lessons with everything from World Drumming to popular music instrumentation, such as Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Drums and Vocals. Our program Chairs are from the Board of Directors and Staff at the Center and include professionally trained musicians we will hire for this one-of-a-kind offering. We have uncovered a lack of enrichment offerings in our catchment area and hope to bridge the gap by bringing in this program to our over 50 program offerings.
With partner organizations such as grantors, schools and music oriented businesses, we hope to bring in an array of instruments to house at our Center for lessons and private practice time slots for kids who might otherwise not have this important opportunity available. We are a very rural area that boasts inspiring mountains, lakes and rivers and hope to import that scenic inspiration into musical creativity through our students work. We thank you for your consideration of funding this amazing program.
