Project Title: Safe Harbor Shelter and Transitional Living Program
Project Description:
The Northern Lighthouse, Inc. opened the doors of our new emergency shelter for homeless youth ages 10-17 on August 15, 2022. We provide access to food, clothing, basic needs, case management, counseling, and support with family reunification and education through this program. To meet the need of services for older homeless youth, we decided to create a Transitional Living Program for youth ages 16-21. Our Transitional Living Program opened on January 3, 2023. This program provides for the needs of youth, allows up to an 18 month stay, and focuses on education and employment to prepare youth for living independently and making successful transitions into adulthood. Since the beginning of these programs, we have served 4 youth in our emergency shelter and 5 youth in our Transitional Living Program. Throughout the next year, an estimate of 4-6 youth will stay at our shelter and 6-16 youth will participate in our Transitional Living Program. A grant award from the Hermanowski Foundation would help us meet the immediate needs of homeless youth ages 10-21. The Northern Lighthouse, Inc. receives federal and foundation funds to support our services for homeless youth, but this support only covers a portion of the costs of our services. The Northern Lighthouse, Inc. depends on grant awards from foundations and donations from individuals in our community to assist homeless youth and sustain our shelter and Transitional Living Program. We respectfully request a donation of $10,000 to help us continue to provide basic needs, services, and support to homeless youth in Maine.
Total Project Budget: $912,937

We also received $2,500 from Northern Light Health, $5,000 from Versant Power Charitable Giving, $4,475 from the Maine Community Foundation, $2,000 from the Red Sox Foundation, $10,000 from Machias Savings Bank, $5,000 from the Bangor Savings Bank, $5,000 from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, a $500 gift card from Hannaford, $2,500 from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust, and $1,000 from the Simmons Foundation.
