Project Title: Eagles’ Nest ELC General Operation
Project Description:

Eagles’ Nest Early Learning Center (ENELC) is a not-for-profit early childhood education center located in the mountains of Black Hawk, Colorado. ENELC is the only childcare facility in the area, and we serve the counties of Gilpin, Boulder, Jefferson, and Clear Creek. ENELC has been a vital necessity to families in all four counties. ENELC is the only licensed infant and toddler care provider in a 20-mile radius. Since opening the doors in 1996, ENELC has provided affordable care and quality education to all residents in the four counties we serve. The tuition rates are competitive with surrounding centers, either equivalent to or significantly lower. This uniquely affordable and accessible center provides working families with the ability to afford childcare and relieves the burden of a significantly large monthly expense. The center accommodates children on the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) with the applicable counties. This program provides low-income families that face an economic hardship the ability to attend the same early childhood education programs with a lower rate that is affordable. ENELC offers a sliding scale to those who do not qualify for CCAP and provides teachers with scholarships for their children that attend the center. Our program is based on the philosophy that children should be nurtured through consistency and security; teachers and parents should work together to meet the needs of children; and the center’s learning environment should be a happy and positive one. To uphold our philosophy and continue to provide the community with these wonderful learning programs while maintaining a lower than state ratio, we look for alternate funding that this grant provides. In order to support the healthy development of the young children in our community and continue to successfully retain our staff, ENELC respectfully requests $10,000 in general operation from the Foundation.

Project Title: Islamic Center of Detroit Food Security Program
Project Description:

On behalf of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD), I am respectfully requesting $10,000 in grant funding from the Hermanowski Foundation to purchase food for our weekly food pantry that serves low and no-income citizens living in the Brooks, Fiskhorn, Warrendale, and Cody Rouge neighborhoods of Detroit, MI. This program provides food security for the impoverished, vulnerable, homeless, and disabled citizens residing in our service area. With a poverty rate of 39%, and an unemployment rate of 10%, the area served by ICD (zip code 48228) is one of the most impoverished in the nation. (Niche 2022)

The mission of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD) is to serve the most vulnerable people within Metropolitan Detroit through the Muslim faith, Islamic principles, and a fundamental belief in assisting others. In following with this mission, ICD has served over 2,500 individuals (or 500 families of 5) with food from our food pantry each week, free of charge, since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although we have been able to meet the demand for food security in school children and their families, we have discovered a growing need amongst the unemployed, disabled, and senior populations. In fact, requests for assistance from these citizens have increased three-fold amongst our constituency. We know that expanding this program to add more disabled, homebound, and senior aged citizens will be successful because we currently have the capacity to serve over 135,000 meals per week to school age children (under 18) in metro Detroit alone.
Specifically, through the ICD Food Security Program, we will expand the existing food pantry program to serve 100 unique citizens each week in metro Detroit by providing them with food pantry items, including: canned goods, vegetables, fruits, bread, beans, and pasta. This means that and additional 3,000 unique citizens that are isolated at home, in assisted living, homeless shelters, or on the street, will be served monthly; thus, meeting this ever-expanding food insecurity need.

Project Title: The Victory Center Education Program
Project Description:

Individuals affected by autism experience a broad range of challenges. Unfortunately, many public school are not equipped with the resources necessary to adequately address the needs of these students. The Victory Center Education Program provides high-quality, center-based educational services to students on the autism spectrum. Unique to the South Florida community, the program combines educational instruction, daily living, and community skills training with therapy that is based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is the only scientifically proven form of therapy used to treat individuals with autism. The program was designed to fill the service gap for special needs students in the traditional school system. It provides intensive educational support and a highly individualized curriculum for TVC students who are complex learners with autism and other developmental disabilities. The school has grown to include six programs: Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) and Intensive Behavioral Intervention (IBI), Pre-Academy, the Vocational Program, Adult Program, Summer Program and Respite/Community Programs which include aftercare and weekly activities. In addition to the 1:1 student/teacher ratio, The Victory Center has implemented both 2:1 and 3:1 student/teacher ratios, enabling more students on the spectrum to receive educational services. Each child receives what he or she needs to develop to his or her full academic and social potential. For the first time, TVC is currently experiencing our highest enrollment levels in the school history with a waitlist.

Project Title: ArtsRAGEOUS Youth Art and STEAM Program
Project Description:

The overarching goal for Willcox Theater and Arts’ (WTA) year-round ArtsRAGEOUS Youth Art and STEAM Program is to "open doors." ArtsRAGEOUS focuses on creative outlets for youth from Willcox and the surrounding rural communities to explore, learn, achieve, and receive recognition for their accomplishments. ArtsRAGEOUS provides opportunities for all youth, especially those who are often overlooked or spend too many hours alone on video games or consumed by social media.

Willcox area youth have few opportunities to exercise creativity, excel through the arts, or engage in project-oriented STEAM learning. Arts learning is virtually non-existent in the local K-12 schools that serve Willcox and the smaller communities. These arts workshops for youth are crucial to the development of the whole child; one teen boy wrote, "You can take a picture of a bird or a landscape, but you can’t take a picture of a dragon. With art, you don’t just retell others’ stories, you tell your own." ArtsRAGEOUS not only encourages youth to explore their creativity and interests through a variety of arts, crafts, and STEAM programming but actively promotes life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, mentorship, problem-solving, and self-confidence in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Artistic and STEAM-oriented opportunities to participate, explore, learn, and accomplish are accessible to youth through WTA’s programming during the school year and during WTA’s eight-week Summer Youth Program. Summer program offerings include visual arts, digital art, photography, clay, coding, 3D design and print, podcasting recording and streaming, and general crafts. School year offerings focus on visual and digital arts, 3D design, and print and coding. Building ArtsRAGEOUS for 2024 brings more opportunities for more youth to tell their stories, explore creativity through various art media, experience creative STEAM problem-solving and project work, and test the limits of their possibilities.

Project Title: Modus Drive: removing transportation barriers for young adults and families with children
Project Description:

Modus removes barriers through innovative transportation solutions, education, and advocacy. Transportation is often cited as the number one barrier for individuals trying to access medical appointments and social services. In Tulsa, roughly 20% of the population (upward of 80,000 people) cannot access the health services they need due to inadequate transportation options in the area. Lack of transportation is a critical need because, ultimately, this problem leads to decreased physical and mental health, poorer education, and lower employment rates than those with reliable transportation. By improving transportation equity in our community, we are improving health equity and family stability.

Modus is directly working to improve the health and wellness of children. For youth under the age of 18, Modus is the only curb-to-curb transportation option available to them because other national rideshare programs, like Uber and Lyft, are not available for individuals under 18. Modus allows anyone over the age of 13 to ride with Modus without an adult present. We also have car seats available upon request, making Modus the best option for families with small children. Last year, Modus has provided nearly 5,000 rides to 358 children, teens, and young adults (see breakdown below).

Clients served between 0-5 years (24%)
Clients served between 6-13 years (8%)
Clients served between 14-18 years (38%)
Client Served between 19-24 (30%)
77% of all rides were for educational, healthcare, and social services purposes.

Every year since Modus began, we have experienced tremendous program growth, especially with our flagship program Modus Drive. Last year alone, the program provided 72% more rides compared to the year before. Our staff consists of only four full-time employees, eight part-time drivers, and 25 volunteers. With only three vehicles in the fleet, drivers often use their own cars to provide rides.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 21, 2023
Requested Amount: 5,000

Project Title: Taproots at Camp Walden – Two New Programs
Project Description:

Taproots at Camp Walden is the non-profit affiliate of Camp Walden in Cheboygan, MI. The purpose of Taproots is to provide programming and tuition awards that help bring children of color and children from low-income households in Michigan to camp. At Taproots, we believe the powerful experience of summer camp is something every child deserves – regardless of race, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. But in the U.S., summer camp is an opportunity largely reserved for children from well-off families. Nationwide, nearly 80% of children attending summer camp are from middle- or upper-income families. Children of color and children from low-income families are greatly underrepresented at summer camps. Taproots works to remove barriers and create access to summer camp.

Attending summer camp has a positive effect on youth development. Studies show that children demonstrate positive gains in the areas of self-esteem, independence, leadership, social skills, physical and thinking skills, and positive values after attending as little as one week of sleep-away summer camp. Research further shows that those gains are largely maintained when a child returns home. Children recognize that they learned something new or improved their skills. Parents notice their children are more confident and have better self-esteem after attending camp.

We are seeking funding for two new programs we’re offering this summer:
(1) The Walden Way Program creates opportunities for campers who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) to attend Camp Walden for two- or four-week sessions by helping cover part or all of the cost of camp tuition.
(2) The TapSS Graduates Program creates opportunities for kids from low-income households to attend Camp Walden for two- or four-week sessions by covering all of the cost of camp tuition. Campers attending
through this program will have previously “tried-out” camp through the four day TapSS Program.

Project Title: NMS Outreach Programs
Project Description:

Neighborhood Music School (NMS) is a nonprofit music school that serves as an artistic home, community anchor, and resource for families in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights neighborhood. Following our mission of inspiring minds and enriching our community through music education, NMS offers low-cost, high-quality music instruction on a variety of instruments.

NMS respectfully requests $5,000 to fund our Outreach Programs. Outreach and community partnerships play a large role in achieving our mission. Outreach programming is designed to introduce, explore, and inspire community through hands-on music education. Outreach initiatives are achieved in three ways:

At NMS: NMS provides multiple events and opportunities to engage with the community at the school itself. We host free concerts and a monthly showcase named “Showtime!” in which we open our Lawn Stage or Parlor for students to perform their works in progress for a safe, supportive audience of family, friends, and community members. We also host a Winter and a Summer Open House that features performances, games, community resources, and registration opportunities.

In the classroom: NMS provides structured group music instruction and appreciation courses in 1-week to 10-week residencies for schools and organizations who would not otherwise have music instruction consistently in their curriculum.

In the community: NMS engages directly with the community through performance, demonstration, and as guest artists at resource fairs, festivals, community events and public arenas. Community outreach is an opportunity to directly partner with organizations who share goals, ideas, and programmatic needs that NMS can help fulfill. For example, NMS partners with Art in the Park to present Community Band in nearby Hermon Park. Community Band welcomes musicians of all ages and all skill levels to play in an open ensemble every Saturday. In April, NMS will begin Early Childhood Music and Movement and Songwriting classes at Art in the Park.

Project Title: Med Korner Pharmacy
Project Description:

At the heart of our Camp is our Med Korner – caring for the medical needs of our campers and staff round the clock. The Pharmacy is where camper medicine and equipment is stored, where supplementary OTC medicines are stored, where pillboxes stacked to the ceiling are ready for mealtime med distribution. The Pharmacy serves another critical purpose – our Things to Bring list, sent in advance to all camper families, can be a source of stress. Some of our families cannot pack sunscreen or shampoo as perhaps their families share big bottles; some families do not have enough socks to get their child through 2 weeks of Camp, many families do not have rain gear. Our Pharmacy, nicknamed (with blatant disregard for trademark) “CVS” by our counselors, also stocks these extra items that may not show up in a child’s luggage. Counselors discretely “shop” in the Pharmacy (aka CVS) and the needed items turn up on a camper’s bunk on the first day of camp.
