Project Title: NMS Outreach Programs
Project Description:
Neighborhood Music School (NMS) is a nonprofit music school that serves as an artistic home, community anchor, and resource for families in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights neighborhood. Following our mission of inspiring minds and enriching our community through music education, NMS offers low-cost, high-quality music instruction on a variety of instruments.
NMS respectfully requests $5,000 to fund our Outreach Programs. Outreach and community partnerships play a large role in achieving our mission. Outreach programming is designed to introduce, explore, and inspire community through hands-on music education. Outreach initiatives are achieved in three ways:
At NMS: NMS provides multiple events and opportunities to engage with the community at the school itself. We host free concerts and a monthly showcase named “Showtime!” in which we open our Lawn Stage or Parlor for students to perform their works in progress for a safe, supportive audience of family, friends, and community members. We also host a Winter and a Summer Open House that features performances, games, community resources, and registration opportunities.
In the classroom: NMS provides structured group music instruction and appreciation courses in 1-week to 10-week residencies for schools and organizations who would not otherwise have music instruction consistently in their curriculum.
In the community: NMS engages directly with the community through performance, demonstration, and as guest artists at resource fairs, festivals, community events and public arenas. Community outreach is an opportunity to directly partner with organizations who share goals, ideas, and programmatic needs that NMS can help fulfill. For example, NMS partners with Art in the Park to present Community Band in nearby Hermon Park. Community Band welcomes musicians of all ages and all skill levels to play in an open ensemble every Saturday. In April, NMS will begin Early Childhood Music and Movement and Songwriting classes at Art in the Park.
