Project Title: Saved by the Bell
Project Description:

The Missoula Boxing Club exists to leverage the appeal of competitive amateur boxing for the purpose of academic achievement, positive mentorship, and healthy citizenship of at-risk youth in northwest Montana.

Books Before Bags
Our hallmark program is simple – we call it Books Before Bags. Our boxing club is FREE for kids, ages 9-19, but before they are allowed to hit the bags they have to first hit the books. 45-60 minutes of homework is required BEFORE they are allowed in the gym. Our facility’s Academic Center is equipped with tables, chairs and education tools – monitored by volunteer tutors who connect with students and provide academic assistance, as needed. Once a child’s homework is finished to the satisfaction of the tutor, they can head into the gym to train with the head boxing coach.
We are a USA Boxing Registered Club, positioned to create champions in the ring, and champions in life – bringing hope, strong adult mentorship and ending whatever social ill has fostered the condition of "at-risk youth.” Since opening our doors, we have had the pleasure of working with 159 kids in our first year, 2021!

Requested Funding
Our hope, in applying for your grant and partnership with the Hermanowski Foundation, is to continue to provide a free program for students. While the majority of staff work as volunteers, we hope to maintain salary of our Head Coach position – a critical aspect of our program. Our current wage for this position is $17/hour, but we would like to raise it this coming Fall. A grant of $9000 for the 2022-23 school year would allow us to offer almost $18/hour. Our Academic Director position is already funded by a sizable grant to cover the entire salary.

Total Project Budget: $154,100

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Corporate Sponsorships: $22K, of which $6500 is received; Government Grants: $6K, of which $0 is committed; Foundations: $62K, of which $45K is committed; Individual Contributions: $19K, of which $7200 is received; Events: $12K, of which $2,300 received; Other Income: $1000, of which $240 received

Project Duration: 9 months (8.5, regarding this potential grant, which awards in October)

Requested Amount: $7,500

Project Title: Integrating Literacy Promotion into Pediatric Care
Project Description:

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is an evidence-based intervention which supports healthy brain development and family relationships to mitigate the determinants of health. The program turns routine pediatric visits (infancy to 5 years) into opportunities to empower parents to build language-rich interactions and book-centered routines into their families’ daily lives. Trained doctors use a book as a tool to prescribe reading by modeling read-aloud strategies while teaching and modeling for parents about how to share books and why it is important. Parents are engaged in the conversation as the provider offers anticipatory guidance and emphasizes how reading brings the family together. Every child takes a brand new, specially selected, age appropriate book home to keep.

ROR’s evidence-based model has shown in twenty-one peer-reviewed studies that parents in a ROR program read more often with their child, families are more likely to report they enjoy reading together, and children’s language development is improved. Locally, the quantity and quality of time spent reading is improving after a family’s experience with Reach Out and Read with a 50% increase in parents reading daily (source: 2021 annual parent survey).

We prioritize working with clinics that serve families living in poverty who are impacted by multiple social-determinants of health. Our program is integrated into 37 outpatient pediatric and family medicine health clinics and one Newborn Intensive Care Unit primarily in Cleveland and the first-ring suburbs reaching more than 20,000 children per year. Seventy-seven percent of the children we serve rely on public health insurance or are uninsured and 71% of the children we reach are BIPOC. Supporting our network of providers with training, resources, and new children’s books to facilitate supportive, educational conversations with parents, we are building a foundation for life-long success in our youngest citizens.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 03/21/2022
Requested Amount: $8,000

Project Title: Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Teen Advisory Council
Project Description:

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) provides hope, help, support, and education for people living with mood disorders across their lifespan. Public health professionals too often develop resources to support teens without teens’ input. As an organization rooted in peer support, DBSA believes we will learn best how to help teens by working with teens themselves.

Through this project, we intend to assemble a Teen Advisory Council (Council) in January 2023. High school students (ages 15-18) from across the United States will convene monthly via video conference. The group will be a mix of teens who identify with lived experience or allyship of those living with depression or bipolar.

DBSA seeks the Council’s contribution in understanding the issues impacting teens’ mental health in real-time. As a result, we will learn and understand how best to support teens living with mood disorders, tactics to reduce stigma among teens, and what resources may best accomplish this. This will enable DBSA to build relevant resources informed by teens themselves.

Living with a mental health condition can feel disempowering. We believe participation on the Council, in a safe community of peers, teen participants will feel emboldened as leaders and take pride in their contributions.

By the end of the program year, we will develop strategies and a work plan to execute them based on the recommendations of the Council.

Total Project Budget: $12,000

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/21/2022
Requested Amount: $4,925

Project Title: STEM Labs and Maker Spaces
Project Description:

Dove Schools is building STEM Labs and Maker Spaces for each of our campuses, and we would like to apply for funding through the Hermanowski Foundation for a pair of 3D Printers!

Dove Schools is a district of nine high-performing public charter schools in Oklahoma. Dove provides tuition-free college preparatory education with focuses on STEM and character. With a current enrollment of over 3000 students, Dove has served Oklahoma families for over 20 years. We have high-performing students from diverse backgrounds: 80% are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and 88% are non-White.

With new maker spaces we will be able to add new capabilities to our Science classes and Science Olympiad and engineering competitive teams, and provide STEM-based design and crafting experiences for all students. Our goal is to provide hands-on learning and crafting experiences for younger students in Elementary and Middle School that can be built upon through High School. Incorporating our STEM Lab/Maker Space into early curriculum is key: we don’t want it to be something added as a bonus or “enrichment” for a small group of students, but something that we build our foundation on.

In preparing for this project we have visited working Maker Spaces at Oklahoma State University, Oral Roberts University, and Harmony Schools of Texas for their expertise. We have also partnered with Fab Lab Tulsa, who are providing guidance on how we should equip our labs – including the Lulzbot 3D Printers. We have also created introductory coursework in design – the software side of the process – thanks to a generous grant of Macbooks for students from the Kirkpatrick Foundation.

Regardless of funding, we would like to invite representatives of the Hermanowski Foundation to tour any of our 9 Oklahoma campuses and meet our amazing students and staff.

Project Title: Pathways Youth Program
Project Description:

Pathways is a year-round youth program that serves school-age children living at Laura’s Home, Women’s Crisis Center at The City Mission. Pathways provides an after-school program with homework help, access to a variety of cultural activities, and a series of discussions covering important life skills, designed to assist children’s growth in social-emotional learning. Pathways also offers a 10-week summer program featuring similar offerings, with the addition of local field trips and more outdoor activities.

Pathways is designed to present unique opportunities for students to learn about conflict resolution, healthy communication, development of coping strategies, maintaining physical health, and more. Children are assessed using best practice assessments like Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA), and KIDCOPE, which help staff create individualized plans for each child.

Children who participate in the Pathways program also gain tools to assess their mental/emotional well-being and exit with the necessary connections for growth. Children attending Pathways go through the SELF (Safety, Emotions, Loss, Future) curriculum, covering the development of tools to help combat future trauma or stressors as well as methods for strengthening self-regulatory mechanisms and social-emotional skill development. As children progress through the curriculum, caseworkers measure social-emotional skills of students weekly through the DESSA to determine the rate of progress and identify other areas that may need more attention. These assessments guide staff and caseworkers as they make referrals to children for wraparound services.

Caseworkers and staff also work to ensure that each child in the Pathways program at Laura’s Home achieves stable, regular school attendance, and receives educational support. Pathways staff provide homework help, assist in creating and maintaining Individual Education Plans, and work with numerous partner organizations to provide extra services to homeless students. Laura’s Home also provides students with materials for school, including backpacks, school supplies, and access to reliable internet.

Project Title: ArtSmart After School Arts Enrichment Program
Project Description:

Grant funds are requested to support ArtSmart, ArtsQuest’s after-school and summer art enrichment program serving elementary and middle school students. Throughout the two 8-week sessions during the school year and two 6-week sessions in the summer, students are offered classes in a variety of disciplines to augment their classroom arts curriculum. Content is developed by Teaching Artists with guidance from the ArtsQuest Education team to create rubrics, outline goals, and measure success.
ArtSmart classes take place in the studios and classrooms of ArtsQuest’s Banana Factory Arts Center that houses 30 resident artist studios. Students are challenged to excel through comprehensive, in-depth instruction in a wide range of disciplines including painting, mosaics, fiber arts, ceramics, printmaking, public art, improv comedy, digital illustration and more. Students can view and appreciate art in the galleries and create artwork of their own in the studios.
ArtSmart is designed for underserved youth, offering a unique experience to achieve while building social, cognitive, and fine motor skills. Student to Teacher ratio is 10:1 to provide high-quality arts experience for students and individual support from the instructor. Over twenty Teaching Artists participate and deliver over 1,000 hours of instruction annually. ArtSmart is offered free to schools, where an average 60% of students eligible for the program qualify for free or reduced lunch. Students are bussed to the Banana Factory where they receive a healthy snack before beginning their classes. In this unique environment, students are encouraged to work collaboratively, provide critical feedback of each other’s work, and communicate effectively. Programs culminate in an exhibition of student work in the Banana Factory galleries during community festivals. These exhibitions give students the opportunity to share their work with friends, family, and the community. The ArtSmart program grew 30% in the 2021-22 school year, adding classes and engaging more students.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 21, 2022
Requested Amount: $7,500.00

Project Title: Virginia Children’s Book Festival & Year-Round Programs
Project Description:

This grant will help more than 50,000 children engage in hands-on literary programming with award-winning authors and spark a love for reading. Through author visits, year-round programs, and virtual opportunities, your support will help children develop literate identities, have positive experiences with books, and establish lifelong leisure reading habits. The VCBF requests support for program expansion, specifically the following: year-round programming, book distribution programs, and annual festival, which will be a hybrid of in-person offerings along with virtual programming. In light of the pandemic, we have pivoted to a hybrid festival format and expanded our year-round programming & book distribution to respond to community needs. We provide programs at no cost to students & schools; this grant would enable us to continue offering our services at no cost to participants.

We are dedicated to creating a culture of literacy for all children, regardless of circumstance. We aim to help children have positive experiences with books, develop social and literate identities, and establish leisure reading habits. We stand in the gap left by underfunded schools, economic depression and technological inequality to expand the perspective of Virginia’s children and offer them innovative, interactive programming that leads to lifelong reading and better lives.

We’ll achieve our objectives by:
1.Taking books to wherever families and children are by way of book distributions. This includes our effort to make 30% or more of books distributed represent diverse voices.
2. We are also building a virtual curriculum based on READcart (social reading program) themes
3. Expanding all of our free programming (which means all of our programs since every VCBF program is offered free of charge). We plan for the VCBF to be held as a hybrid event this fall on Longwood’s campus. In addition, we are launching free monthly creative writing & reading workshops for children and youth in partnership with authors, illustrators, and other collaborators

Because we serve children throughout the Commonwealth, we will submit grant and/or sponsorship requests to community and private foundations that are home to sizable portions of our program participants. Requests will be made modestly, thoughtfully, and in consideration of how many participants come from each county or region. We will also pursue funding from private donors and corporate sponsors, as we have done each year since our inception.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: General Operating Support
Project Description:

Hear Your Song empowers children and teens with serious illnesses and complex health needs to make their voices heard through collaborative songwriting.

Hear Your Song has now supported 200+ children ages 6-18 in 27 states in writing their own songs. At the same time, we’ve grown six undergraduate-led, campus-based chapters, engaged hundreds of volunteer musicians around the globe, and built over a dozen partnerships with children’s hospitals, specialized schools/camps, and other nonprofits, including the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Montefiore Medical Center, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, Double H Ranch Camp, MitoAction, The ELM Project, and the Hang Tough Foundation. We focus our outreach to new communities on populations often overlooked in pediatric music programming, especially kids with diagnoses that predominantly impact communities of color.

We Create: In live, collaborative songwriting sessions, Hear Your Song volunteers work with kids ages 6-18 to guide them through the process of writing their own song lyrics. Using the kid songwriter’s ideas for musical style, melody, instrumentation, and tempo, volunteer composers and musicians then set those words to music and record the song to be heard, celebrated, and shared.

We Mentor: Hear Your Song trains and mentors undergraduate leaders who volunteer directly with children experiencing serious illness through our campus-based chapters. In order to best meet the needs of every kid as well as the volunteers who serve them, we are committed to providing all volunteers who lead songwriting sessions with trauma-informed care training.

We Amplify: Hear Your Song strives to shift public perceptions of kids experiencing serious illnesses by building a digital community within which children’s own words and musical ideas can demonstrate the fullness of their identity and the boundlessness of their creativity. We share lyric videos of each completed song, clips of kids talking about their songwriting experience, and messages from volunteer collaborators celebrating each child’s musical vision. Please visit our website, YouTube channel, or Instagram to hear a sample of the extraordinary songs that kids have written with us.

Project Title: Elevar Foundation Community Outreach Program
Project Description:

“Without music, life would be an error.” (Shinichi Suzuki)
Knowing it is crucial to offer underserved audiences free learning and performance opportunities, the Elevar Foundation will present Community Outreach Week 2023 for young audiences in its home state of Florida as well as year-round community engagement activities.
Elevar’s Community Outreach Week will follow Elevar’s prestigious Third Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition to be held in January 2023 at Lynn University’s Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton. The week of free performances will feature competition winners from 2017, 2020, and 2023 in engagements at schools, churches, libraries, and community-based organizations.
Throughout the year, under the auspices of the Elevar Foundation, first-prize winners of the Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition (EOIVC) provide masterclasses and community engagement opportunities for underserved and hard-to-reach individuals on a regular basis nearly everywhere they perform. From concerts and talk backs at Title 1 public schools to intimate musical gatherings at community centers, hospitals, churches and libraries, their commitment to giving back knows no bounds. The Elevar Foundation is so lucky to have such dedicated Laureates who believe in its mission.
Elmar Oliveira, Elevar founder and international renowned violinist, delivers master classes on a regular basis throughout the year for young aspiring violinists. An attendee at a recent virtual masterclass wrote, “Thank you for the masterclass. I really enjoyed playing for you. I realized that when people hear a famous violinist, they become inspired by it, and it makes them want to practice really hard to be a great violinist. I learned a lot of new bowings and fingerings from you. I appreciate your taking the time to teach me. I will always remember this masterclass with you.”
