Project Title: STEM Labs and Maker Spaces
Project Description:

Dove Schools is building STEM Labs and Maker Spaces for each of our campuses, and we would like to apply for funding through the Hermanowski Foundation for a pair of 3D Printers!

Dove Schools is a district of nine high-performing public charter schools in Oklahoma. Dove provides tuition-free college preparatory education with focuses on STEM and character. With a current enrollment of over 3000 students, Dove has served Oklahoma families for over 20 years. We have high-performing students from diverse backgrounds: 80% are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and 88% are non-White.

With new maker spaces we will be able to add new capabilities to our Science classes and Science Olympiad and engineering competitive teams, and provide STEM-based design and crafting experiences for all students. Our goal is to provide hands-on learning and crafting experiences for younger students in Elementary and Middle School that can be built upon through High School. Incorporating our STEM Lab/Maker Space into early curriculum is key: we don’t want it to be something added as a bonus or “enrichment” for a small group of students, but something that we build our foundation on.

In preparing for this project we have visited working Maker Spaces at Oklahoma State University, Oral Roberts University, and Harmony Schools of Texas for their expertise. We have also partnered with Fab Lab Tulsa, who are providing guidance on how we should equip our labs – including the Lulzbot 3D Printers. We have also created introductory coursework in design – the software side of the process – thanks to a generous grant of Macbooks for students from the Kirkpatrick Foundation.

Regardless of funding, we would like to invite representatives of the Hermanowski Foundation to tour any of our 9 Oklahoma campuses and meet our amazing students and staff.

Total Project Budget: Estimated to be $800,000
