Project Title: Integrating Literacy Promotion into Pediatric Care
Project Description:
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is an evidence-based intervention which supports healthy brain development and family relationships to mitigate the determinants of health. The program turns routine pediatric visits (infancy to 5 years) into opportunities to empower parents to build language-rich interactions and book-centered routines into their families’ daily lives. Trained doctors use a book as a tool to prescribe reading by modeling read-aloud strategies while teaching and modeling for parents about how to share books and why it is important. Parents are engaged in the conversation as the provider offers anticipatory guidance and emphasizes how reading brings the family together. Every child takes a brand new, specially selected, age appropriate book home to keep.
ROR’s evidence-based model has shown in twenty-one peer-reviewed studies that parents in a ROR program read more often with their child, families are more likely to report they enjoy reading together, and children’s language development is improved. Locally, the quantity and quality of time spent reading is improving after a family’s experience with Reach Out and Read with a 50% increase in parents reading daily (source: 2021 annual parent survey).
We prioritize working with clinics that serve families living in poverty who are impacted by multiple social-determinants of health. Our program is integrated into 37 outpatient pediatric and family medicine health clinics and one Newborn Intensive Care Unit primarily in Cleveland and the first-ring suburbs reaching more than 20,000 children per year. Seventy-seven percent of the children we serve rely on public health insurance or are uninsured and 71% of the children we reach are BIPOC. Supporting our network of providers with training, resources, and new children’s books to facilitate supportive, educational conversations with parents, we are building a foundation for life-long success in our youngest citizens.
