Project Title: ArtSmart After School Arts Enrichment Program
Project Description:
Grant funds are requested to support ArtSmart, ArtsQuest’s after-school and summer art enrichment program serving elementary and middle school students. Throughout the two 8-week sessions during the school year and two 6-week sessions in the summer, students are offered classes in a variety of disciplines to augment their classroom arts curriculum. Content is developed by Teaching Artists with guidance from the ArtsQuest Education team to create rubrics, outline goals, and measure success.
ArtSmart classes take place in the studios and classrooms of ArtsQuest’s Banana Factory Arts Center that houses 30 resident artist studios. Students are challenged to excel through comprehensive, in-depth instruction in a wide range of disciplines including painting, mosaics, fiber arts, ceramics, printmaking, public art, improv comedy, digital illustration and more. Students can view and appreciate art in the galleries and create artwork of their own in the studios.
ArtSmart is designed for underserved youth, offering a unique experience to achieve while building social, cognitive, and fine motor skills. Student to Teacher ratio is 10:1 to provide high-quality arts experience for students and individual support from the instructor. Over twenty Teaching Artists participate and deliver over 1,000 hours of instruction annually. ArtSmart is offered free to schools, where an average 60% of students eligible for the program qualify for free or reduced lunch. Students are bussed to the Banana Factory where they receive a healthy snack before beginning their classes. In this unique environment, students are encouraged to work collaboratively, provide critical feedback of each other’s work, and communicate effectively. Programs culminate in an exhibition of student work in the Banana Factory galleries during community festivals. These exhibitions give students the opportunity to share their work with friends, family, and the community. The ArtSmart program grew 30% in the 2021-22 school year, adding classes and engaging more students.
