Project Title: After school literacy and Art and cultural program
Project Description:

There are over a hundred West African immigrant families on the west side of Detroit; they live in one of Detroit’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Most of those families suffer from financial hardship and struggle to get essentials for their children. In addition, limited education and language barriers prevent them from supporting their children and youth educationally and developmentally. Many elementary kids read under grade level, and high school students lack interest in continuing school. Many of them are dropping out before graduating from high school. The number of mental health issues is also dramatically increasing. In the past two years, the African immigrant community has experienced several cases of suicide, and all of them are in their early twenties. The above problems indicate the urgency of these services in this Detroit community.
MILESTONES
Detroit African Youth Development Organization has served over fifty families through our different programs. Currently, we help 40 school children daily in our after-school programs through our dedicated tutors and volunteers. On the weekends, we receive around 60 children for extracurricular support. We also offer mentorship to high school and college students in the community. Currently, we have access to a gym, and we are looking for a fund to kick off the sports program because there is no sports program for the youth or children in our community.
Current Programs

Tutoring Program:
We tutor students in different subjects, including reading and writing, science, and social studies.
• In our tutoring program currently, we have 60 students in total. The program runs from 3 to 6 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am to 1 pm Saturdays and Sundays.

Youth mentoring program: The mentoring program fucus on psychological and
educational counseling.

Total Project Budget: $50,000 per year

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Donations from the Community members , but is very limited, because we are serving low income areas

Project Duration: 12 months
Geographical Area Served: Detroit

Project Title: Miami Book Fair Children’s Programs
Project Description:

A critically important component of MBF has always been our children’s and youth programming. Thus, we consistently focus on providing top-notch programs to students of Miami-Dade County. Generation Genius Authors (GGA) is one such program.

GGA connects elementary- to high school-age students with authors of the most popular and critically lauded books of the day for children and youth. Its innovation lies in its provision of genuinely interactive author encounters with these authors – including book discussions, Q&As, and face-to-face meetings – who share not just their writing process, but stories of the obstacles they faced and how they overcame them to get to where they are today, leaving students empowered and enthusiastic about reading and their own aspirations.

MBF has worked closely with Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 30+ years in executing this program, and it has served nearly 290,000 elementary, middle, and high school students to date. Our emphasis is on serving students from every corner of the county, particularly those in underserved areas whose families are considered low-/moderate-income. In 2021, 75% of GGA participants were from Title 1 schools.

A key piece of GGA is the distribution of free books to all of its participants – and a grant received from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation will help support the purchase of those books. In 2021, GGA gifted 7,046 free books to children and youth to help them build their home libraries.

Total Project Budget: $240,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Generation Genius Authors is supported annually by a number of funders including the Batchelor Foundation, Peacock Foundation, Alvah H. and Wyline P. Chapman Foundation, Meredyth Anne Dasburg Foundation, The Children’s Trust, Publix Super Market Charities, the NEA and Cowles Charitable Trust. We will also be reaching out to a number of prospective funders this year.

Project Duration: The Virtual Generation Genius Authors program will happen November 12th – 21st, 2021 and the virtual sessions will remain online through the end of the school year
Geographical Area Served: Primarily Miami Dade County, but also Broward and Palm Beach Counties
Age Group To Be Served: 5 – 18

Employer ID Number: 54-1704064
Organization Tax Status: Nonprofit

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/28/22
Requested Amount: $8,000

Project Title: Piedmont Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
Project Description:

Since June 2021, Piedmont CASA has served 170 children and in just the past two months 32 new cases have been referred to us. These children present with a wide variety of medical issues including PTSD, ADHD, autism, attachment issues, aortic stenosis, medication management, speech and language delays, substance-exposed premature infants, and broken teeth.

Without appropriate trauma-informed care, these children can grow up with some very high risks: long-term disease, unemployment, homelessness, crime, and surprise pregnancy that can lead right back into the cycle of abuse.

PCASA Volunteers actively promote the intervention young victims need. They are trained to understand the impact of trauma on the brain, and how it may affect behaviors. Research shows that children with CASA Volunteers do better in school, receive more medical support, and spend less time in foster care.

In FY23, the Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts in the 16th District will continue to refer all their child abuse and neglect cases to Piedmont CASA – and we will continue to provide CASA Volunteers for each and every one of them. At year’s end, we expect that over 100 Volunteers will have served 200+ children and youth.
Volunteers have historically cut foster care stays by an average of 7.5 months, reducing child welfare costs to localities by about $24,375 per child. As a program, Piedmont CASA is unsurpassed in making use of our community’s most valuable asset, its citizens, who as Volunteers donate their time and skill in service to abused and neglected children.

We are submitting this $8,000 request to the Hermanowski Foundation to help ensure that we can sustain our organizational capacity to support and supervise our staff and Volunteers so that they can continue to be effective advocates and mentors for our children and youth during this incredibly stressful and challenging time.

Total Project Budget: $706,183

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Committed Funding for FY 2023 includes DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services), VOCA (Victims of Crime Act), Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. Pending funding includes Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band, Inez Duff Bishop Charitable Trust, and the E. C. Wareheim Foundation. Individual donations compose approximately 40% of our funding. Our event, a Bracket Breakfast, contributes another 4%.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/28/2022
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Triumph Educational Center Supervised Visitation Program
Project Description:

Triumph Ministries is seeking support for our Supervised Visitation Program. This program services noncustodial parents and their children in the San Francisco Bay Area who have experienced domestic trauma and have mandates from Alameda County Social Services or Alameda County Family Court to receive supervised visitation. Our program takes a strengths-based perspective, believing that there is hope for anyone who is motivated to change and improve. No family should be left behind or counted as a lost cause.
Supervised Visitation is extremely important in the early phases of recovery, as it allows parents to connect with their children and, in certain cases, with each other in a safe environment. Without these services available, children would either be put at risk to form relationships with their parents or be unable to do so entirely. Supervised Visits take place in a safe, natural environment facilitated by our monitors who are trained to encourage positive family interaction. Our goals are to provide safety for the child, parents, and monitor while encouraging positive interaction and relationship development. The rooms in our facility include books, toys, movies, and other items for parents to engage in play and similar activities with their children. We have a formal kitchen, giving parents an opportunity to prepare meals and eat with children. Our space is also equipped with a nursery for parents to visit with newborn and infant children. The options we provide are based on the needs of the parents and/or the terms of the court orders. Our monitor staff is culturally competent, meets the standards for providers under Family Code 3200 and 3200.5, and has experience working with children, ranging in age from infant to adult. Our desire is to provide a comfortable space for the children and ensure the family has the best experience possible.

Total Project Budget: $95,000.00

Other Funding

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 27, 2022
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Robin’s Hood – Co-mentoring Project
Project Description:

The Robin’s Hood project provides advocacy and co-mentoring for youth and seniors who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. Clients participating in the project enlist themselves in a co-mentoring agreement between homeless youth and seniors. Mentoring between youth and adults will result in mental health benefits for both individuals.

Co-mentoring recognizes the benefits of mentoring, whereby one individual provides guidance and advice to another individual can be used to build and nurture trust and significant relationships.

This program was developed because Seniors, adults aging from 55+, are the fastest-growing population experiencing homelessness and poverty in the United States. Many high schools require a community graduation project.

A 2018 report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition found that, nationally, 1 out of 3 extremely low-income renters is older than 62. An Arizona-specific housing study by the coalition shows a shortage of affordable rentals for “extremely low income” households in Arizona that disappears higher up the income ladder. What many people experiencing homelessness have to battle, they said over and over again, is a sense of shame for ending up this way after working their whole lives. Some haven’t told their families. Also, 1 in 3 youth will grow up without having a mentor.

Many high schools currently require a community graduation project. This program offers them the opportunity to engage with seniors in their community.

Youth who participate in the project have the opportunity to enlist in a six-session job preparation workshop. The workshop will be led by participating seniors and organization staff. This workshop covers basic employment skills including, job searching, completing applications, resume writing, and interviewing.
