Project Title: Miami Book Fair Children’s Programs
Project Description:
A critically important component of MBF has always been our children’s and youth programming. Thus, we consistently focus on providing top-notch programs to students of Miami-Dade County. Generation Genius Authors (GGA) is one such program.
GGA connects elementary- to high school-age students with authors of the most popular and critically lauded books of the day for children and youth. Its innovation lies in its provision of genuinely interactive author encounters with these authors – including book discussions, Q&As, and face-to-face meetings – who share not just their writing process, but stories of the obstacles they faced and how they overcame them to get to where they are today, leaving students empowered and enthusiastic about reading and their own aspirations.
MBF has worked closely with Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 30+ years in executing this program, and it has served nearly 290,000 elementary, middle, and high school students to date. Our emphasis is on serving students from every corner of the county, particularly those in underserved areas whose families are considered low-/moderate-income. In 2021, 75% of GGA participants were from Title 1 schools.
A key piece of GGA is the distribution of free books to all of its participants – and a grant received from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation will help support the purchase of those books. In 2021, GGA gifted 7,046 free books to children and youth to help them build their home libraries.
