Project Title: Robin’s Hood – Co-mentoring Project
Project Description:
The Robin’s Hood project provides advocacy and co-mentoring for youth and seniors who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. Clients participating in the project enlist themselves in a co-mentoring agreement between homeless youth and seniors. Mentoring between youth and adults will result in mental health benefits for both individuals.
Co-mentoring recognizes the benefits of mentoring, whereby one individual provides guidance and advice to another individual can be used to build and nurture trust and significant relationships.
This program was developed because Seniors, adults aging from 55+, are the fastest-growing population experiencing homelessness and poverty in the United States. Many high schools require a community graduation project.
A 2018 report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition found that, nationally, 1 out of 3 extremely low-income renters is older than 62. An Arizona-specific housing study by the coalition shows a shortage of affordable rentals for “extremely low income” households in Arizona that disappears higher up the income ladder. What many people experiencing homelessness have to battle, they said over and over again, is a sense of shame for ending up this way after working their whole lives. Some haven’t told their families. Also, 1 in 3 youth will grow up without having a mentor.
Many high schools currently require a community graduation project. This program offers them the opportunity to engage with seniors in their community.
Youth who participate in the project have the opportunity to enlist in a six-session job preparation workshop. The workshop will be led by participating seniors and organization staff. This workshop covers basic employment skills including, job searching, completing applications, resume writing, and interviewing.
