Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Texas Ballet Theater’s 2022-2023 CityDance Outreach Program
Project Description:

Texas Ballet Theater respectfully requests consideration of a $10,000 grant by the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support TBT’s CityDance program that delivers after school dance classes at no cost to 50 Title I schools and recreation centers across North Texas. CityDance prioritizes under-resourced youth residing in cultural deserts. CityDance serves more than 1,500 students every year, 90% of whom are students of color. To extend TBT’s impact beyond the classroom, each student receives a dual language voucher to attend a Company production with a family member.

TBT’s CityDance increases access to the arts for at-risk youth through an after-school program that specifically serves under-resourced areas of the community. In Texas, America After 3PM’s survey found that 622,227 children are alone and unsupervised during after-school hours. Through funding from strategic partners like the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation, CityDance provides enriching programming to schools and students at no cost, which removes the financial barrier for families; 59% of parents surveyed by Afterschool Alliance indicated that programs are often too expensive and deters them from enrolling their child/children. Since CityDance takes place after school, the program minimizes students’ chances of engaging in potentially harmful/dangerous activities and serves as a valuable opportunity to educate and entertain at-risk youth through basic ballet movement exercises.

While social and physical activities for youth face severe limitations during the pandemic, nowhere is it felt more dramatically than in our under-resourced communities. The pandemic has only exacerbated learning efforts for underserved students, and it is more important than ever to explore innovative options to engage students physically, emotionally, and academically through creative activities. CityDance classes offer a solution to schools and educators to help bridge this learning gap and often serve as a student’s first engagement with classical music and dance.

Total Project Budget: $127,506

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Launched in 2005, as the premiere outreach program for TBT, CityDance attracts funding from a variety of foundations, corporations, and government agencies, ensuring the program’s continued success after expending funds from the Hermanowski Family Foundation. CityDance receives additional current funding support from: • Alcon Foundation – committed • BNSF Railway – committed • Dallas Office of Arts and Culture – committed • H-E-B Tournament of Champions – committed • Texas Commission on the Arts – committed • PNC Bank – anticipated • R4 Foundation – anticipated • Texas Women for the Arts – anticipated.

Project Title: Casa Kids Campus – Residential Services for Foster Youth
Project Description:

The mission of Casa de Amparo is to support those affected by and at risk of child abuse and neglect, through a range of programs and services that promote healing, growth, and healthy relationships. Since 1978, Casa de Amparo has been an exemplary provider in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect in San Diego County. Our main campus in San Marcos, California is known as the Casa Kids Campus.

Funds will be used to support Casa de Amparo’s Residential Program that provides intensive therapeutic treatment services in welcoming, home-like cottages to foster youths who have been removed from their home due to abuse and neglect. Casa Kids Campus serves youth ages 12 through 18 years old, including children with special needs, pregnant and parenting foster girls, and their infants. Care is provided 24/7, including medical and dental care, transportation to appointments, individual and group therapy, tutoring/educational support, evidence-based parenting curriculum for young mothers, life skills workshops, nutritious meals, supervised family visitation, and recreational and therapeutic activities such as art classes, field trips, and holiday celebrations.

Casa Kids Campus offers a safe home environment where children can rest, receive comprehensive support from caring adults, and simply “be a kid.” For some, Casa Kids Campus is the first place where they can fall asleep at night knowing they are completely safe. It is a place where children who had previously been neglected can finally connect with joyful childhood experiences and begin to process their experiences and feelings in a way that feels safe for them and take their first steps toward healing.

By providing caring, trauma-informed support, our goal is to help children break the cycle of family violence and improve opportunities for a healthier future.

Project Title: First Youths Amphitheater
Project Description:

KEO Charities is creating an outdoor open space theater with a stage, for youth of all ages (10-21), with an outdoor recreational area called the First Youths Amphitheater. This amphitheater is going to be used for music, entertainment, poetry/storytelling, comedy, playing of instruments, performances, competitions and other forms of cultural and personal expressions as a form of communal creative outlet.
Program Purpose
The purpose is to make the teens in the neighborhood feel heard, safe, connected, less isolated. This is also an effort to continue the push in setting a stop to the culture of silence. This program will help students and community youth channel their inner creativity, master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, master a new musical instrument, heal, learn contemporary life and develop more pride in their Native American heritage.
Another objective of the amphitheater is that it will serve as a community improvement project, to spring vitality, beautification, and improve the overall positive town appeal. The amphitheater will also serve as a tourist attraction and bring economic improvement to the area.
Through this amphitheater we aim to develop passion and creativity in Gallup New Mexico youth with activities such as:
• Music – Singing, rap
• Plays/performances
• Stand-up Comedy
• Poetry/Story telling
• Playing of musical instruments
• Graffiti wall artistry

Today’s Date: 3/30/2022
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Roots & Wings
Project Description:

The Front Porch is a non-profit community music school in Charlottesville, Virginia offering music lessons, community jams, dances, and concerts in our pursuit to connect everyone through music. We are seeking funding for “Roots & Wings,” The Front Porch’s comprehensive music outreach program designed to build musicians from the inside out. We partner with organizations who serve children in challenging circumstances to offer music classes and music mentorship in locations throughout the community. Currently, Roots & Wings artists teach 275 students each week at thirteen sites including local public elementary schools, early education centers, and Boys and Girls Clubs.

At our partner preschools, children from three to five years old explore rhythm, melody, and expression by learning seasonal songs, using percussion instruments, and dancing with colorful scarves. Over 80% of these children qualify for free/reduced lunch. At the elementary schools, we partner with the YMCA, which provides all after-school programming for Charlottesville City Schools. Teachers bring in instruments for exploration, survey musical concepts through movement and song, and have even written original songs with the kids. 75% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches. None of these organizations have existent music programming.

Myriad studies demonstrate that early-childhood music education accelerates brain development, strengthens language acquisition and reading skills, and improves social-emotional and motor skills. Our Roots & Wings curriculum is designed to build well-rounded people as well as musicians, and it builds upon the standards set by the Virginia Standards of Learning for the Arts.

In the fall semester, we have been asked to expand into five new preschools that specifically serve low-income families. We are respectfully requesting a $10,000 grant to enable us to reach these new early-childhood centers and provide music education for over 400 preschoolers. Funding would compensate our teaching staff at a professional rate and purchase necessary instruments and supplies. 100% of grant money would go directly to service providers and supplies; no administrative fees are included in this grant request.

Total Project Budget: $170,640

Other Funding

Project Title: Expanding STEM and literacy summer camp opportunities
Project Description:

In Idaho, students of low-income families are at the highest risk of losing academic ground to middle-income and high-income families over the summer months (Kim and White, 2011). For every child in an after-school program, 4 are waiting to get in (After School Alliance 2020) and nearly 60% of Idaho parents do not enroll their children in out-of-school programs due to cost. To address this gap, One Stone high school students designed summer camps offered to elementary-aged students across the Treasure Valley at no cost. Students have been implementing four signature camps over the past five years; each relating to different educational domains including literacy, entrepreneurship, art, and STEM. Our goal is to expand our literacy camp, OBA, and our STEM camp, TINKER in the summer of 2023 in order to serve lower-income students at Future Public School and in the Caldwell community.

Future Public School’s vision is to equip engineers with the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed in college and the future world. Their vision to prepare students for success aligns perfectly with TINKER’s goals and values. Future Public School has Title 1 status and 53% of their families are low-income (Idaho Dept. of Ed.). We will also begin offering two OBA camps in the Caldwell area in partnership with local schools and organizations.

OBA and TINKER camps have had proven success in providing valuable educational opportunities to students in the months they need it most. After completing OBA, there is a 62% increase in students reporting “a lot of” or “complete” confidence in their ability to read out loud. After completing TINKER, there is an 82% increase in students who believe that other people think the student can be a scientist when he or she grows up.

Project Title: SYC Literacy Program
Project Description:

The Salesian Youth Center(SYC) is an after-school and summer facility on Villa Madonna School Campus, for the children of the inner-city to have a safe place to go off the streets. The SYC is owned by the Salesian Sisters, and is in partnership with Boys & Girls Club(they provide staffing, we provide everything else.) Since it opened in 1995, the SYC has daily activities of education, mentoring, team activities such as sports, and arts and crafts. It allows kids the opportunity to get the help and assistance they need while still having fun. There is a large emphasis on the kids education and mentoring to get them back where they need to be on all levels. Literacy, which was a struggle for many children in the past, took a nosedive in the past two years due to Covid and lack of in person instruction. The SYC Literacy Program is at the top of the list of needs. Around 168 children attend the Salesian Youth Center. Around 77% of the children, ages 5 to 18, are from single parent households. Most come from families with incomes below $15,000. 82% that attended are African American, 12% are hispanic, and 6% are other. 91% are from Tampa Heights, with 9% coming from an area approximately 10 miles away. 59% are female and the rest are male. Instructors for the Literacy Program are hired by the Salesian Sisters as Boys & Girls Club has limited staffing. We ask for your help in keeping the Literacy program going. Many kids have excelled over the years and have increased their reading levels, some up to two grades. We ask for your assistance in helping the children who need it most. As the Sisters take a vow of poverty, the SYC relies on community support.

Project Title: Culture in Motion: Capoeira Kids
Project Description:

Afro-Latinos have no recognition in the U.S. Census and barely any representation in popular culture, according to the Pew Research Center. Children of Afro-Latino heritage report feeling disconnected and not “Black” or “Latino” enough for either community. A report by the Urban League of Broward County (2013), shows that these children living in low-income communities are at the highest risk for diabetes and obesity from poor access to quality nutrition and recreational activities. South Florida has a tremendous underprivileged Afro-Latino population and our program, Culture in Motion: Capoeira Kids provides weekly classes directly to underserved community centers to get kids physically active and expose them to the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira.

Capoeira originated from African slaves in Brazil who disguised self-defense training as song and dance, preserving culture as best they could. Many credit this martial art with helping African slaves escape from plantations and create sovereign communities in Brazil. Capoeira and its related arts continue to empower Afro-Latinos to celebrate their identity. The dynamic nature of Capoeira allows the practice of acrobatics, self-defense, strength training and music together. Students will boost their confidence, discipline, strength and agility while experiencing positive examples of Afro-Latino culture.

We will provide Capoeira classes to community centers throughout the year. Up to four 45-minute classes will be taught per day by 2 instructors. Classes will have a 40-student capacity, impacting up to 160 students per day. We are partnering with His House Children’s Home and Camillus House, where we conduct classes for the foster children living on their campus. These children feel displaced, unstable and are in desperate need of routine and guidance. The cultural values, mentorship and physical activity provided by our classes will go a long way towards providing these children with the resilience to face adversity with dignity and strength.
