Project Title: Culture in Motion: Capoeira Kids
Project Description:

Afro-Latinos have no recognition in the U.S. Census and barely any representation in popular culture, according to the Pew Research Center. Children of Afro-Latino heritage report feeling disconnected and not “Black” or “Latino” enough for either community. A report by the Urban League of Broward County (2013), shows that these children living in low-income communities are at the highest risk for diabetes and obesity from poor access to quality nutrition and recreational activities. South Florida has a tremendous underprivileged Afro-Latino population and our program, Culture in Motion: Capoeira Kids provides weekly classes directly to underserved community centers to get kids physically active and expose them to the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira.

Capoeira originated from African slaves in Brazil who disguised self-defense training as song and dance, preserving culture as best they could. Many credit this martial art with helping African slaves escape from plantations and create sovereign communities in Brazil. Capoeira and its related arts continue to empower Afro-Latinos to celebrate their identity. The dynamic nature of Capoeira allows the practice of acrobatics, self-defense, strength training and music together. Students will boost their confidence, discipline, strength and agility while experiencing positive examples of Afro-Latino culture.

We will provide Capoeira classes to community centers throughout the year. Up to four 45-minute classes will be taught per day by 2 instructors. Classes will have a 40-student capacity, impacting up to 160 students per day. We are partnering with His House Children’s Home and Camillus House, where we conduct classes for the foster children living on their campus. These children feel displaced, unstable and are in desperate need of routine and guidance. The cultural values, mentorship and physical activity provided by our classes will go a long way towards providing these children with the resilience to face adversity with dignity and strength.

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Our annual grant goals are to reach $60,000. The Batchelor Foundation has committed $5,000.
