Project Title: Expanding STEM and literacy summer camp opportunities
Project Description:

In Idaho, students of low-income families are at the highest risk of losing academic ground to middle-income and high-income families over the summer months (Kim and White, 2011). For every child in an after-school program, 4 are waiting to get in (After School Alliance 2020) and nearly 60% of Idaho parents do not enroll their children in out-of-school programs due to cost. To address this gap, One Stone high school students designed summer camps offered to elementary-aged students across the Treasure Valley at no cost. Students have been implementing four signature camps over the past five years; each relating to different educational domains including literacy, entrepreneurship, art, and STEM. Our goal is to expand our literacy camp, OBA, and our STEM camp, TINKER in the summer of 2023 in order to serve lower-income students at Future Public School and in the Caldwell community.

Future Public School’s vision is to equip engineers with the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed in college and the future world. Their vision to prepare students for success aligns perfectly with TINKER’s goals and values. Future Public School has Title 1 status and 53% of their families are low-income (Idaho Dept. of Ed.). We will also begin offering two OBA camps in the Caldwell area in partnership with local schools and organizations.

OBA and TINKER camps have had proven success in providing valuable educational opportunities to students in the months they need it most. After completing OBA, there is a 62% increase in students reporting “a lot of” or “complete” confidence in their ability to read out loud. After completing TINKER, there is an 82% increase in students who believe that other people think the student can be a scientist when he or she grows up.
